Roma knocked out in area round

BY GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

Despite feeling like they outplayed their opponent for most of the game, the Roma Gladiators girls soccer team was knocked out of the playoffs in a 1-0 (3-1 in PKs) area round loss to Victoria West on Friday in Corpus Christi.

“It was a really tight game,” Roma assistant coach Alberto Castillo said. “Most of the game, we dominated. It was up and down.”

Neither team mounted a ton of offense, with Castillo estimating that Roma had 10 clear shots on goal compared to three or four for Victoria West.

Playing against the wind during the first half, Roma took a more cautious approach. After the wind calmed down at halftime, the Lady Gladiators switched to a more attacking style. Still, Roma was unable to break through, sending the game to a penalty shootout.

Roma scored on only the second of its four attempts, allowing Victoria West to clinch with a make in the fourth round.

The Lady Gladiators finished the season 6-6 in District 31-5A, with all six losses coming to Edinburg Vela, Sharyland High and Sharyland Pioneer — teams that are still alive in the Class 5A playoffs.

Roma will return just one senior next year — Jennyfer Gutierrez — after losing eight following this season.

Adriano’s goal lifts McAllen Memorial past Brownsville Hanna

GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — Senior Alyssa Adriano has become more of a distributor for the McAllen Memorial Lady Mustangs soccer team this season, but on Thursday she played the role of finisher.

Adriano scored Memorial’s lone goal off a corner kick as the Lady Mustangs defeated the Brownsville Hanna Golden Eagles 1-0 in an area-round playoff game at Boxer Hernandez Stadium on the campus of McAllen Memorial High School.

“As soon as I saw the ball coming to me, I prepared myself with my left,” Adriano said. “I took a shot and I was like, ‘It had to go in.’ And, of course, it went in. It was an amazing goal.”

Adriano’s tally came off a feed from Connie Avila with 31:08 to play in the first half. Coach Matthew Kaiser said Adriano was “the perfect person in that spot” because of her ability to stay calm and finish the volley with the side of her foot.

“When you get the ball bouncing that way, you start to get big eyes, and you want to kill it and break the net,” Kaiser said. “She just stayed cool, got on top of the ball with a side volley, and put it in the back of the net.”

After scoring 13 goals during district play last season, Adriano slid into the role of distributor this year.

She scored just four times this district season, but had about two times that total in assists.

“There were some growing pains along the way, but I think now she understands it,” Kaiser said. “And when we need her to, she can still score goals, just like today. She’s that dangerous player where she can make the assist, or she can make the goal, and you always have to be aware of where she’s at.”

Indeed, Adriano said playing without last season’s leading scorer, America Martinez, was a major adjustment, at first.

But she and the rest of the Lady Mustangs have shown no signs of slowing down, cruising to an 11-1 finish and a District 30-6A title before crushing Laredo LBJ 5-0 last week in the bi-district round of the playoffs.

“At the beginning, I was kind of lost,” Adriano said. “But then, I got used to it as the season kept going on. Now we’re in playoffs, so we have to give it all. It’s my senior year, and I want to advance to state and everything. That’s my dream.”

The Lady Mustangs got one step closer on Thursday by dominating possession. Hanna tried to pressure Memorial whenever possible, but the Lady Mustangs consistently thwarted their efforts with sharp passing and crisp dribbling from players such as Avila, Leslie Flores and Cameron Alaniz.

“When we take our time, that passing game, and the possession game, can really kill you,” Kaiser said. “We were limiting it to one touch, or two touches, and I think that was the key for us.”

Memorial was able to generate just a handful of shots on goal, but that total far outpaced Hanna’s. The Lady Eagles didn’t get a real look at net until just 9:15 remained on the clock, when Natalie Garcia fired a shot from about 20 yards out.

Garcia has been the Lady Eagles’ go-to scorer all season, and Kaiser said the Lady Mustangs schemed to take her away by controlling the ball.

Natalie Young, Jessica Coronado, Gina De La Garza and Amy Guthrie were all key to the defensive effort.

Memorial advances to face either Del Rio or Harlingen South in the regional quarterfinals.

“I feel pretty good. If we keep working hard how we have been throughout the season,” Adriano said, “it should be great.”

#RGVSoccer Playoff Roundup: Sharyland Pioneer prevails in overtime

GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

Freshman Andrea Reyes scored with three minutes to play in the second overtime to lift Sharyland Pioneer to a 2-1 win against Victoria East in an area round playoff game Thursday in Corpus Christi.

Less than a minute after Victoria East missed a penalty kick that could have been the game winner, Reyes took a through ball to beat the offsides trap, went one-on-one with the Victoria East goalie, and finished the play with a chip.

“We never gave up. We never panicked,” Pioneer coach J.J. Lopez said. “They put a lot of pressure on us, but we were relentless today.”

Freshman Nikki Cuellar tallied in the opening half to give Pioneer a lead, but Victoria East tied the game with about 7 minutes to play.

“That deflated us a little,” Lopez said. “So I said, ‘Just htinka bout all the hard work that we’ve done throughout the season. Now we have two ten minute overtimes to keep it going.’”

Pioneer did just that, setting up a regional semifinal matchup against Edinburg Vela.

EDINBURG VELA 2, GREGORY PORTLAND 1: At Portland, Chery Chavez scored the game-winning goal with 3 minutes remaining to lift Vela.

Chavez took a through pass from one of Vela’s midfielders and went one-on-one against the Gregory-Portland goalie, tucking a shot just inside the left post with her left foot.

“It was a team effort. The girls did a great job during the game,” coach Hugo Leal said. “Everybody is a key player on our team.”

The goal was Chavez’s second of the game. Her first gave the SaberCats a 1-0 lead.

SHARYLAND HIGH 4, FLOUR BLUFF 2: At Laredo, Kaitie Watson scored twice in the first half and Sharyland High led the whole way against Flour Bluff.

Vanessa Guevara and Nalley Garza also scored for the Rattlers.

Coach Aaron Clemons said the team’s preparation was the biggest key to its success.

“We had a chance to go out and scout, and we got to see them play last Friday,” Clemons said. “I played that coach as a varsity coach and as an assistant twice over the years and kind of had a good idea of what his style was going to be. We had a good game plan, and it was successful.”

Sharyland High will face either Roma or Victoria East next.

BEEVILLE JONES 2, PROGRESO 1: At Kingsville, Progreso’s season came to an end in overtime at the hands of Beeville Jones.

BOYS

PSJA SOUTHWEST 2, CALALLEN 0: At PSJA Southwest High School, the Javelinas shut down Calallen’s attack and broke through early in the second half to secure a win.

Luis Escudero snapped a scoreless tie, and Humberto Medina followed to give Southwest some breathing room.

“The key to the game was just our speed and our quick touch,” PSJA Southwest coach Jesus Palomin said. “We took plenty of shots in the first half. We were just missing them. I think we hit the crossbar like two or three times and the side post we hit a couple of times also.”

The Javelinas controlled the midfield and limited Calallen’s offense to just two shots by taking away counter-attacking opportunities.

Southwest will play Donna next week.

DONNA 3, MEDINA VALLEY 0: At Corpus Christi, Donna High pulled out a win despite being down three regular starters.

With two players lost to red cards from the previous week and another unavailable due to injury, coach Mario Hernandez said his team kept the pressure high.

“We ran like you have no idea,” Hernandez said. “Eduardo Escobar was the leader, but the young group stepped up. … The young kids, they had to step it up today, and they did.”

Oscar Munoz scored first around 20 minutes in, and Escobar tallied the first of his two goals about 10 minutes later. Donna’s final score came after halftime.

Donna will play PSJA Southwest in the regional quarterfinals, most likely on Tuesday.

PROGRESO 3, ROCKPORT-FULTON 0: At Kingsville, Progreso’s stout defense shut down Rockport Fulton.

Coach Margarito Jimenez said Rockport-Fulton was limited to just two or three chances on goal.

“Our defense kept them in check the whole game,” Jimenez said. “Our defense has been the strength the whole season. I think we have one of the better defenses in the Valley.”

Progreso scored about 10 minutes into the game before adding their second and third goals about a minute apart midway through the second half.

Rogelio Zamora scored twice, and Heriberto Gomez scored once.

Progreso will face Hidalgo on at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sharyland High.

HIDALGO 3, LA VERNIA 1: At Calallen, Hidalgo fell behind by a goal in the first half but controlled play the rest of the way to win.

“The kids never gave up when we were down,” Hidalgo coach Zeke Morales said. “We maintained that calm and we played our game. Overall, the team showed a lot of character coming back from behind.”

Helario Bermudez, Julio Gallardo and Victor Castaneda scored for Hidalgo.

After La Vernia scored at the 22nd minute of the first half, Hidalgo tied the match just before halftime. The Pirates tallied another goal 10 minutes into the second half and a third with 10 minutes to play.

Morales estimated that Hidalgo outshot La Vernia about 27-6.

Donna High making most of unexpected playoff berth

GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

DONNA — When the Donna High boys soccer team officially qualified for the playoffs, senior Ricky Ramos was at home, watching TV.

Even after beating Edcouch-Elsa on the final Friday of the District 32-5A season, Donna was stuck in fifth place, out of the playoffs. Ramos had promised his classmates that the team would qualify for the postseason, so he wasn’t planning to show his face in school the following Monday.

“We felt sad. We had the vision to be in the playoffs,” Ramos said. “Us seniors, we didn’t get to play in the playoffs. So we wanted the playoffs so bad.”

Dejected, Ramos slept in until about 9:30 a.m. on Monday. Around 10, he got a call from his teammates.

“They were like, ‘Come to school.’ And I was like, ‘Why?’” Ramos said. “They were like, ‘We made the playoffs!’ And I said, ‘Na, you’re kidding.’ I got mad, because that wasn’t funny. They said they were serious, so I talked to coach, and he said we made it. And so I said, ‘OK, I’ll be there.’ It was pretty amazing.”

As a result of UIL rules infractions that forced third-place Donna North to forfeit the season, Donna High slid up one position to fourth in the standings. Donna used the new life to upset Sharyland High in the bi-district round, catapulting the team into tonight’s area round matchup against Medina Valley at 7 in Corpus Christi.

“We got really emotional, especially for the seniors that were leaving, because they thought it was over,” sophomore Eric Vasquez said. “But fortunately, it wasn’t. We made it.”

Donna entered the year as a relatively young team with just four senior starters, but the group was desperate to reach the playoffs after falling 3 points shy in 2014.

The race in District 32-5A was even tighter, with Donna (22 points) finishing just one win shy of Brownsville Pace (23 points) and Donna North (24 points).

“We had already said the good byes,” Donna coach Mario Hernandez said. “We cried. I had a knot in my throat. … When we found out on Monday that we were in the playoffs, that smile came back to my face. I couldn’t believe it.”

Once Donna was in, it had just three days to regroup and prepare for Sharyland High, one of the best teams in the Valley.

While Donna had finished the district season 8-6 with 20 goals for and 20 goals against, Sharyland High had cruised to an 11-1 record in District 31-5A, outscoring opponents 38-6.

Still, Donna entered the matchup confident. The Redskins and Rattlers had clashed as district opponents for the previous eight years, and Donna had won four of the last six meetings.

“We know the way they play, and they know the way we play,” Hernandez said. “We’ve developed a rivalry. And every time we play, we play at 100 percent.”

Donna did what Hernandez said the team has become known for in recent seasons: pressuring the ball and constantly running. After a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation, Donna prevailed 6-5 in penalty kicks. Ramos said the win set off a celebration, with the team spraying water all around the locker room.

“Our mentality was to win,” Vasquez said. “We tried our best, and we pulled it off. It was just the mentality that we had that makes it special.”

Throughout the year, Hernandez has been telling his player that they can control the game, and he said that the team believes it after the win against Sharyland.

Repeating that success will be the formula to beat a Medina Valley team that Hernandez said is taller and stronger than Donna.

After finding out they had a second chance at the season, Hernandez said his players told him they were ready for any opponent. They proved it with their first win, and the conviction remains strong.

“We’re very confident,” Vasquez said. “We can go way higher than this, and I think we will.”

#RGVSoccer playoff roundup: McAllen High pulls out close win against Laredo United South

BY GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

McAllen High’s Jackie Lemus scored and played a key role defending Laredo United South’s top threat, Emily Zapata, as the Bulldogs came away with a 3-2 win in the bi-district round of the playoffs on Friday at Roma High School.

“Jackie had a heck of a great game,” McAllen High coach Pat Arney said.

McAllen High took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal by Quetzel Toren, but Zapata scored early in the second to tie it up. Lemus and Dana Idrogo netted goals for McHi before Zapata tallied again to bring South within a goal.

McHi goalie Ruby Iracheta came up with a key save late to protect the lead.

“The last minutes were pretty nail-biting,” Arney said. “We were bringing girls back and double-teaming their superstar and just trying to hang on there at the end. Sometimes, the momentum switches. But the girls did a great job. I’m very proud of them.”

McHi faces Lopez next, likely Thursday at a time and location to be determined.

McALLEN MEMORIAL 5, LAREDO LBJ 0: At the Student Activity Center in Laredo, McAllen Memorial jumped on Laredo LBJ early, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes.

The Mustangs had extended their lead to 5-0 by halftime, with goals from Alyssa Adriano (2), Cameron Alaniz, Leslie Flores and Daisy Robles.

From there, Memorial cruised to the win.

“Our pace relaxed in the second and LBJ came out with a few hard challenges and fouls from frustration,” coach Matthew Kaiser said. “We kept our composure but slowed down the intensity, hoping to avoid any unwanted cards or unnecessary injuries.”

Memorial will face Brownsville Hanna in the area round.

LOS FRESNOS 5, PSJA MEMORIAL 0: At PSJA Memorial High School, Los Fresnos took care of business, easily handling PSJA Memorial. The Falcons will face Laredo United in the area round.

DEL RIO 6, LA JOYA JUAREZ-LINCOLN 5: At Shirley Field in Laredo, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln’s season ended at the hands of Del Rio.

BOYS

LA JOYA JUAREZ-LINCOLN 4, LAREDO UNITED SOUTH 3: At the Student Activity Center in Laredo, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln pulled out a win and will face Brownsville Veterans next week in the area round.

DEL RIO 3, LA JOYA PALMVIEW 1: At Shirley Field in Laredo, a goal by David Almazan was all Palmview could muster as Del Rio ended the Lobos’ season.
