La Joya Juarez-Lincoln rolls past Mission High to firm up playoff position

GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — When the La Joya Juarez-Lincoln boys soccer team opened the season at the Mission Tournament in early January, the Huskies had already set their sights on state. Returning seven starters from a team that pushed 2015 state champion Brownsville Rivera to penalty kicks in the regional quarterfinals, Juarez-Lincoln felt ready to advance to the state tournament for the first time in its eight-year history.

Playing on the same Tom Landry Stadium field almost 10 weeks later, the Huskies continued to solidify their playoff position. Juarez-Lincoln’s road through a grueling District 30-6A may not have been as easy as anticipated, but a 4-0 win on Tuesday against Mission High ensures the Huskies will have a chance to make the state run they have been envisioning.

“We have a good team to go to state,” midfielder Manuel Castrejon said. “If we work hard and be consistent with what we’re doing, we’ll be fine in the playoffs.”

Even as Juarez-Lincoln went 2-4 with a pair of losses in penalty kicks during the first round of district play, coach Victor Ramos wasn’t worried.

He saw that opponents had adjusted to play back against Juarez-Lincoln’s high-octane offense after watching video of the Huskies winning the Laredo Tournament and earning the runner-up spot in Mission. Fortunately, he had a plan to counter.

“It was kind of difficult. The space was not there to open up the games,” Ramos said. “They obviously studied the way we played, a very offensive team, and just played back. The second round, we tried to do the same thing: slow down the pace of the game. It’s been working.”

The change forced the free-flowing Huskies to work on finer points of the game, including set pieces. Juarez-Lincoln also switched up its style of play, mixing in a 3-4-3 formation after starting with a 4-4-2.

Castrejon said the team recaptured its consistency by learning the dangers of being overconfident. Ramos said he expected the team to improve in Round 2 after seeing the group follow a similar pattern last year. As the season has gone on, the Huskies have grown smarter and more patient.

“They’re more confident,” Ramos said. “Sometimes, when things like this happen, the team matures in a better way. I think these kids are doing things better. They’re more dedicated. When you learn to play different systems, of course it’s going to help you out.”

On Tuesday, the Huskies netted their first goal of the game less than 3 minutes in, when Juan Hernandez converted a header off a corner kick by Castrejon. With 11:50 to play in the first half, Castrejon tallied a goal of his own, tucking a low shot past Mission High’s keeper from about 10 yards away.

Juarez-Lincoln continued to extend its advantage in the second half, when Luis Becerra put home a header off a scramble in the box at 35:42. Angel Garcia rounded out the scoring on a penalty kick at 31:29.

Mission High was stifled throughout the game by Juarez-Lincoln keeper Javier Garcia. The Eagles’ Jesus Garcia came closest to beating him, sending a try across the mouth of the net and wide right just 10 minutes into the game.
With the win, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln solidifies the playoff picture in District 30-6A, even with most teams not closing out the season until Friday.

McAllen High will be the district’s top seeded team, going undefeated through its first 11 district matches. La Joya High and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln will play Friday for the No. 2 seed, with the loser taking third. The fourth and final playoff spot will go to La Joya Palmview, which had just eight points through seven matches but has won three of its past four to vault from sixth to fourth in the standings.

“Our district was very competitive,” Ramos said. “Usually, Brownsville is the one that are very competitive, but this one, this year, it was a little bit different. Everybody played, and they knew how to play. It was very different than last year. “

Cervantes’ goal lifts McAllen High past McAllen Memorial

GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — When McAllen High first met McAllen Memorial on Feb. 12, Lady Bulldogs sophomore Serena Cervantes was taking part in the regional wrestling meet.

Down a key piece of its attack that night, McHi pulled out a win in penalty kicks. On Friday, with the Lady Bulldogs needing three points in their rematch with the Lady Mustangs to have a realistic shot at the District 30-6A title, Cervantes was there to provide the spark.

Her goal during the 24th minute of the opening half stood as the lone tally, allowing McAllen High to remain unbeaten in district play with a 1-0 win over McAllen Memorial at Boxer Hernandez Stadium.

“It was a lot of pressure, but I knew we could do it, because we beat them before,” Cervantes said.

The win gives McAllen High 11 victories — five of which have come in penalty kicks — for 28 points in the district standings. Although Memorial drops to 8-2, the Lady Mustangs have earned each win in regulation to amass 25 points, keeping them in contention to share the district crown.

In the event of a tie, McHi will claim the No. 1 seed after sweeping the two meetings with Memorial.

“It’s been two years since we had the trophy, so it would be nice to get it back,” McHi coach Pat Arney said.

Cervantes’ goal was a major factor helping the Lady Bulldogs get in range. The sophomore tracked down a long ball on the left half of the pitch and a few yards above the 18-yard box. After outmuscling her marker, Cervantes said she saw an opening in the corner of the net and felt good about her shot, even as she slipped in the mud and finished the play on a knee.

“It was very difficult,” Cervantes said. “I thought I could shoot the corner, so I shot it. I was hoping it would go in, and it did.”

Cervantes has been one of McHi’s leading scorers in district play this season despite missing a pair of matches to participate in the regional wrestling tournament and travel to state as an alternate.

Arney credited Cervantes’ success to her full-throttle effort, even if it occasionally results in fouls. He added that she has a knack for scoring big goals, tallying against Memorial last season and lighting up Rowe throughout her two years on varsity.

“She was 25 or 30 yards out. To turn and pop one over like that, I didn’t see it coming,” Arney said. “I thought she was going to pass it, and she just went for goal and put it in. It’s a hell of a shot.”

Though Memorial’s offense is one of the Valley’s most potent, the Lady Mustangs scored just once in two matchups with the Lady Bulldogs this season, and that goal came on a penalty kick.

Arney said the key was strong pressure and man marking. Jackie Lemus was steady in goal, Cari Guerra was assigned to take away Memorial’s Connie Avila, and Mia and Miranda Muñoz were both strong on the back end. McHi also benefitted from the return of Hannah Kelly, who did not play in the first matchup with Memorial due to injury, and the constant presence of lone senior starter Gaby Gonzalez.

“The defense did an awesome job,” Arney said.

Still, Memorial had plenty of opportunities to net an equalizer, none better than when Natalie Young rang a shot off the left post about 8 minutes into the second half.

Avila, Daisy Robles, Leslie Santana, Cameron Alaniz and Priscilla Quintero all had scoring opportunities during the final 40 minutes, but each came up empty.

“We’re used to getting quite a few chances against other teams, but with McHi it’s usually cut in half,” coach Matthew Kaiser said. “Do you score on those? If you do, the game goes your way. And if you don’t, it doesn’t.”

With matchups against La Joya Palmview and Mission High remaining on the schedule, Memorial can still secure a share of the district title if it wins out in regulation.

McHi has just one game remaining, against Palmview.

“We have to take care of business these last two games,” Kaiser said. “I think we’ll rebound well, and we’ll finish things off the way we want and look towards the playoffs.”

Upper-Valley #RGVSoccer Notebook: Under new coach, Donna North back in playoff hunt

GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

With a strong core of returning varsity players at his disposal, first-year Donna North coach Andres Sanchez wanted to make only one small tweak heading into 2016.

He needed more players involved on the defensive end, with midfielders and forwards playing a bigger role in limiting opponents’ space to attack.

“The problem was the defense was not able to hold their ground, especially in close games,” Sanchez said. “The majority of the changes were the way we defended. … That’s been working out for us the last three games.”

With Brayan Zamora leading the charge on defense, the Chiefs have notched three consecutive shutouts in regulation, last allowing a goal against Mercedes on Feb. 26. The effort on the back end is a primary reason Donna North is in position to reach the playoffs in Sanchez’s first season.

“It was a little bit difficult at the beginning to get accepted by them,” Sanchez said. “But little by little we got together, and after our tournament in San Antonio, we came back as a team, and that helped us throughout the season.”

Zamora is one of 14 senior returners on the Donna North roster, alongside standouts Gabriel Magallan at forward and Luis Martinez at keeper.

Magallan has scored a team-best 14 goals on an array of long shots, drives to the net and even headers, while Martinez has earned the trust of the Chiefs defense with his steady play.

North currently sits fourth in the District 32-5A standings with 20 points, although Donna High is nipping at its heels with 18. The two teams will square off Friday in the penultimate match of the district season.

“Giving more importance to that one game would probably stress them out more, and they’d be more prone to making mistakes, so I try to minimize it,” Sanchez said. “The best team should win, and I believe we are the best team right now.”

STRONG IN BACK

As a young offense has sometimes struggled to find goals, Edinburg Economedes has leaned on the strong defensive tandem of Jonathan Segundo and Victor Cardenas.

Their ability to limit opposing scorers has been critical to keeping the Jaguars in a hotly contested District 31-6A playoff race.

“They both work very hard to keep it together and keep the defense strong,” Economedes coach Sam Gonzalez said. “They’re fighters. They fight. They do their best, so that’s why some of the strength is with the defense.”

With Economedes returning only about five players from a senior-laden group that earned the district’s third seed last season, Segundo and Cardenas are trying to bring the team together.

Segundo, a sophomore, and Cardenas, a junior, played only sparingly on varsity last season before stepping up this year.

“The strength of the team more than anything has been that they never give up,” Gonzalez said. “They’ve been constantly working on trying to get together.”

Economedes is 4-5, good for 13 points and a fifth-place standing in District 31-6A with three games remaining on the schedule. The Jaguars will need to pass either Weslaco East (6-3, 14 points), Weslaco High (5-4, 16 points) or Edinburg North (6-4, 18 points) to qualify for the postseason.

“They feel that pressure,” Gonzalez said. “They know they have to win, but you can’t be frustrated to win. You have to play smart.”

HEATING UP

La Joya Palmview’s boys picked up a pair of wins this week to vault from sixth to fourth in the District 30-6A standings as the season enters its final stretch of games.

The Lobos have 14 points, with McAllen Memorial and Mission High tied for fifth place with 10. La Joya High (18 points) and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln (15) rank just ahead of the Lobos. La Joya High has two games to play, while the others have three.

Many of the girls playoff races are also tight down the stretch, with the bottom five teams in District 31-6A (PSJA North, PSJA Memorial, Weslaco East, Weslaco High and Edinburg High) separated by just six points.

In District 31-5A, Valley View (15 points), Mission Veterans (12), Edinburg Vela (12) and Roma (10) are all fighting for two playoffs spots with two games remaining.

Sharyland High girls soccer outlasts Pioneer to help district title chances

GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — Sharyland High’s Vanessa Guevara had been here before, but that proved to be little consolation. When Sharyland High first met rival Sharyland Pioneer on Feb. 16, Guevara netted the game-sealing score in penalty kicks. Still, lining up the penalty kick that could potentially give the Rattlers another win against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, Guevara couldn’t help but feel the pressure.

“I was still super nervous,” Guevara said. “But I was like, ‘I did it last time. Why not do it today again and end it with a good finish?’”

Guevara did just that, punching a shot off the hands of a diving Diamondbacks keeper and into the net. After Pioneer missed its final attempt, Guevara was mobbed by her Sharyland High teammates as the Rattlers celebrated a 1-0 (5-4 in PKs) win at Sharyland Pioneer.

“It’s crazy,” Guevara said. “They’re the biggest competition, and beating them is one of the biggest things.”

With both teams regularly steamrolling the rest of District 31-5A — Sharyland High has outscored its other opponents 49-3, while Pioneer has outscored the rest of the league 40-1 — Tuesday’s win puts the Rattlers in prime position to claim a second straight district title.

Sharyland High is 10-0 and has claimed 28 of a possible 30 points, with matchups against Valley View and Rio Grande City on the schedule. Pioneer is 9-2, netting 28 of a possible 33 points heading into its season finale against Roma.

“It’s great. That’s what we’ve been working for the whole season,” Guevara said. “We wanted district champs, and now we’re on to the next level.”

The teams traded chances and possession mostly evenly throughout the contest, although each side seemed to fare slightly better when the wind was at its back.

For Sharyland High, that was the first half, when Guevara, Kaitie Watson and Isabella Marinaro each generated chances to break the deadlock.

“Everybody that plays us says we’re even,” Sharyland High coach Aaron Clemons said. “It comes down to heart and guts, and you have heart and guts on both sides of the ball. … It’s just unfortunate that there has to be a winner in this game, because both teams played excellent tonight.”

Getting the wind at its back to start the second half, Pioneer quickly generated the game’s best scoring opportunity. Only about 30 seconds into the second period, the Diamondbacks’ Julie Alanis unleashed a shot from the top of the box that deflected off the crossbar.

Andrea Reyes created a few scoring chances for Pioneer, and the team nearly found pay dirt twice off prime crossing passes in the final 10 minutes. Still, the driving wind and strong rain that began with about 17 minutes to play helped wash away the regulation win Pioneer needed to improve its chances at the district title.

“We knew what we were up against,” Pioneer coach J.J. Lopez said. “We got everything the way we wanted with the wind the second half, and we just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

Lemus comes off bench to spark McAllen High past McAllen Rowe in PKs

GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — McAllen High’s Jackie Lemus started her Friday by slamming her hand in a car door upon arriving to school. With redness throughout and bruising under her fingernails, Lemus said she was constantly in pain.

Typically McAllen High’s keeper, Lemus sat the first 80 minutes of Friday’s game against McAllen Rowe because of the injury. But when McHi once again found itself facing penalty kicks, Lemus saw all of her teammates and coach Pat Arney turn her direction.

“I saw everybody look at me, and I was like, ‘I have to suck up the pain for the team,’” Lemus said. “And I did it. I was so proud of myself. I sucked up the pain, and it hurts, but we won. I’m so proud of that.”

Lemus turned aside a pair of penalty kicks despite the injured hand and even netted one as a shooter, helping McHi to a 2-1 (5-4 in PKs) win against Rowe on Friday at De Leon Middle School.

The win keeps Lady Bulldogs undefeated at 9-0, though McHi still trails 3 points behind McAllen Memorial in the District 30-6A standings by virtue of winning so many games in penalties.

“We needed a spark there at the end, and she certainly brought it in for us,” Arney said of Lemus. “We’re happy that she can suck it up.”

Lemus said coming into the game was a challenge after sitting for all of regulation, but one she was ready for. The Lady Bulldogs have had matches come down to penalty kicks five times in district play alone, plus another one or two during the non-district season. As a result, Lemus and her teammates have grown used to the pressure.

“I wasn’t warmed up. I wasn’t mentally ready. But as soon as I stepped on the field, I calmed myself and said, ‘Yes, I can do this,’” Lemus said.

McAllen High fell into a deep hole to start the penalty round, missing two of its first four kicks while Rowe started 3 for 3.

After the Lady Warriors missed their first chance to seal the game, Lemus pushed a kick into the left side of the net to even the round at 3, then followed up with a save to force sudden death.

Paola Alvarez and Miranda Muñoz scored for McHi, and Lemus made her second stop to seal the win.

“I didn’t have to say anything,” Arney said. “The girls at the end just really came through.”

Lemus coming off the bench was critical for a McAllen High team that was down to its fourth goalie. With Lemus and her backup both injured and McHi’s third option not available on Friday for personal reasons, the Lady Bulldogs turned to Amber Valduvin. The stout Bulldogs defense of Gaby Gonzalez, Muñoz, Mia Muñoz and Cari Guerra kept the ball from reaching Valduvin as often as possible, but Rowe’s Victoria Castro was able to bounce a shot past her to level the match at one during the first half.

The score answered an opening goal from McHi’s Serena Cervantes, who took control of a loose ball after Rowe’s keeper collided with a defender and poked it into the empty net about 10 minutes in.

Rowe’s loss was a third consecutive heartbreaker for the Lady Warriors and coach John Martinez. Last week, Rowe was within a goal of taking down District 30-6A leader McAllen Memorial. Two matches ago, Rowe lost 1-0 to La Joya Juarez-Lincoln despite a massive shot advantage. Rowe sits 4-5 on the season, good for third in the standings.

“It was a brutal way to end the game,” Martinez said. “We’ve got two shots to put them away. Obviously, it didn’t go in for us. We were upset, and the girls were upset. We don’t want to kick them while they’re down. We just tell them we have to regroup.”

#RGVSoccer Notebook: Hidalgo boys aiming high despite turnover

GREG LUCA | STAFF WRITER

Even after losing 15 seniors from last year’s regional semifinalist, Hidalgo clinched a District 31-4A title last week with a sense of apathy.

“I was talking to one of my seniors and I asked him, ‘Hey, we won district,’” Hidalgo coach Zeke Morales said. “And he told me straight out, ‘Well, that’s not what we want, Coach. We want to go over there.’ Over there, referring to making it to the state tournament.”

Morales admits that the Pirates may not have the same talent as last year’s group, but he believes they make up for their shortcomings with team chemistry and a desire to make a deep playoff run.

Hidalgo has shown its readiness by breezing through District 31-4A play with a 7-0 record, outscoring opponents 28-2.

“I’m happy they weren’t jumping for joy and saying ‘Oh, we did it,’” Morales said. “I want them hungry. I want them to believe in themselves and know that they can do so much more.”

The Pirates’ offense will be the biggest key to the team’s postseason fate, Morales said. Marco Garcia, the lone returning starter from last year and one of six seniors in the lineup, leads the team with 10 goals. Jesus Niño, the running back for Hidalgo’s football team, provides speed on the outside. And the attack runs through ValleyView transfer Filiberto Sustaita, who last season played with Hidalgo’s junior varsity team.

“He’s just our anchor,” Morales said. “He runs the show for us.”

EASY TRANSITION

First-year La Joya High boys soccer coach Alex Davila didn’t meet his team until practice opened Nov. 30 — only about six weeks from the Coyotes’ season opener.

Ideally, he would’ve gotten started at the beginning of the school year, learning his players’ strengths and weaknesses while implementing his system during the athletic period. He cites the late start as the biggest challenge he’s faced in his first year on the job.

“The lack of time is still an issue, but given the commitment and how welcoming they were and how they embraced the change, that made things slightly better,” Davila said.

Even with the roadblock, La Joya High has emerged as a legitimate playoff contender in a strong District 30-6A.
As the season enters its home stretch, the Coyotes are in second place with 15 points and a 5-3 record.

“Did I expect to be in this spot right now?” Davila asked. “Yes, because their commitment, their skill and their work rate made me believe from the very beginning that we could do something special. But we’re not there yet.”

Upon taking the position, Davila’s first priority was to learn his players and fit the system to them, rather than forcing them to adapt to what he wants to run.

He found that he had a strong core of returners at his disposal, led by senior captains Ulises Gutierrez, Cesar Frausto and top scorer Julian Cortina.

“I have to be flexible,” Davila said. “Time was not there to implement everything I had in mind, so it was a mix of both. Adapting to what I inherited, and mixing it up with my ideas.”

RETURN TO FORM

For Weslaco East coach David Cordero, getting the season back on track wasn’t about inserting new players or making some grand schematic changes. More than anything else, the key was getting the bounces that had once been going the other way.

After enduring three straight losses to open District 31-6A play, Weslaco East has won five consecutive games to get back in the heat of the playoff race.

“I think in the beginning, we were unlucky,” Cordero said. “Now, I guess the luck has just changed.”

Despite a last-place finish in the 2015 district standings, the Wildcats entered 2016 with a wealth of experience and a new confidence. Still, the start of the season didn’t go East’s way. A miscommunication led to the only goal in a 1-0 loss to Edinburg North. Against PSJA Memorial, two miscues in the first five minutes built too big of a hole. And against Economedes, the Jaguars’ game-winning goal ricocheted into the net off one of their own players.

“Now, we’re trying to eliminate those mistakes,” Cordero said. “The other teams are making those mistakes, because we’ve got the same players, but the game has changed completely.”
