Bazan, Brown set for LBA40 showdown

HARLINGEN It came down to the 18th hole to decide the final matchup for the Life Begins at 40 championship, scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Harlingen Country Club.

Harlingen’s Steven Bazan, the defending champion, and Justin Brown, the 2021 champion, came up clutch to set up an all-Harlingen final between two of the more recent LBA 40 champions.

Bazan defeated Henry Cabrera and Brown bested Mickey Boland in the semifinals Friday at Harlingen Country Club.

The defending champion said it was challenging, making it back to defend his title. Cabrera hit some terrific shots Friday and Ron Kilby, a LBA 40 legend, also took Bazan to 18 on Thursday.

“I just feel very fortunate to be here because you have to some good play and some luck involved,” Bazan said.

Bazan placed a long putt which sat on the fringe of the green at 18 within a few feet of the hole to put the pressure on Cabrera and ultimately win the match. The two went back and forth with those type of clutch shots, but it was Bazan that withstood the pressure in the end.

Brown jokingly said he was trying to give the match away, but Boland, the medalist in qualifying, missed too many putts during the final few holes.

The champion is going to be from Harlingen Country Club. Bazan and Brown are members and play together. The final paring was complimentary of each other’s all-around game after clutching up on the final hole and are excited for today.

“He’s one of the best players out here, a defending champion and he is the guy to beat,” Brown said. “I have to play better than I did today to beat him.”

Life Begins at 40 golf tournament returns for 72nd edition

Harlingen’s Steven Bazan is set to defend his Life Begins at 40 title but will have to wait to see who he is up against after qualifying takes place today at Harlingen County Club.

“We have a pretty strong field vying for qualifying,” tournament president Jeffrey Scoggins said.

Thirty golfers are set to compete for 15 championship qualifying spots for the head-to-head tournament set to begin at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday. Only one golfer has a guaranteed spot for that: Bazan.

“The conditions of the course are really nice, and the weather is going to warm up pretty nice,” Scoggins added.

The field is comprised of multiple defending champs. Justin Brown, Chris Wicker, Ray Iler, Richard LaPierre and 12-time champion Ron Kilby highlight the field along with Bazan.

The 72nd annual tournament coincides with events held throughout the week at Harlingen Country Club. The championship round is scheduled to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. Bazan defeated McAllen’s Arnoldo Curiel in 17 holes in the championship match last season.

“We are trying to keep up with the traditions of the tournament and hopefully bring some new innovations as well,” Scoggins said about his final year as president of the tournament. “It is a struggle to maintain traditions and change with the times as well. It has been fun and challenging as well.”

Brownsville Vets’ Ramirez earns COTY honors in first season

Coach of the Year: JC Ramirez, Brownsville Veterans

It was a crazy first season as a head coach for Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s JC Ramirez, and an extremely memorable one.

Even though it was his first year, he made it look like it was his 10th as he guided Brownsville Veterans to a 12-3 season in which the Chargers captured a district, area and regional titles in Class 5A DI.

Like his players, Ramirez was extremely humble during the run and about the team’s success, always thankful for his staff and the Brownsville community that helped power the Chargers to Rio Grande Valley history.

Ramirez made sure the school’s newly developed brand of physical football continued when he was hired.

It did, and with a defense that flew to the ball and an offense that wore down opponents to win 12 games.

“My job was to take that and use that to my advantage, being a first-year head coach,” Ramirez said. “I wasn’t going to come and change a lot of stuff. I think I was the perfect hire because I was already here, so we hit the ground running.”

Ramirez expected that his team would do well with key players returning.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the work (of) our kids and staff, as well as the results we were able to get,” Ramirez said.

Brownsville Veterans’ Pinion earns lineman of the year

Lineman of the Year: OL Matthew Pinion, Brownsville Veterans

Besides the big boys at PSJA North, there is no better offensive lineman in the Valley than Matthew Pinion.

Pinion is listed at 6-2 270, but moves like he is 215 as he turned corners for downfield blocks. The Chargers’ offense ran behind its strong side at will with Pinion leading the way as the strong-side guard.

The Chargers gashed teams behind Pinion. Simple but extremely effective fullback handoffs that usually go for a few yards would be 10-yard-plus gains because of the 270-pound guard.

Pinion is headed to Eastern New Mexico University next week with Trillo and another standout blocker, tight end Nick Tovar.

Pinion alo was the All-Metro lineman of the Year in 2022, as well as an All-Valley selection in 2022.

Brownsville Veterans’ Martinez is the Star/Herald DPOY

Defensive Player of the Year: LB Jaime Martinez, Brownsville Veterans

The Brownsville Veterans Memorial senior middle linebacker imposed his will on opposing offenses all season.

The thick-necked Martinez was never shy from plugging a gap this season and finished with an outstanding 171 tackles, 11 for a loss, two sacks, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and an interception in the area championship against Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial.

Martinez put on a master class against CCVM. The Martinez-led defense held one of the best vertical offenses in the region with one of the better running backs in the Coast Bend to only seven points.

Martinez followed that performance by helping stifle one of the most if not the most physical team in the region, PSJA North. And then against Corpus Christi Miller, the senior linebacker was crucial in the fourth quarter to help lead a miraculous comeback to win the Region IV-5A DI title at Sams Memorial Stadium.

The Brownsville Veterans standout was immense on first and second down late in the fourth quarter, forcing C.C. Miller into long conversions on third down, and the Chargers capitalized off of it.

The senior linebacker also picked up some snaps on offense, scoring two touchdowns.

Brownsville Pace’s Venegas takes The Herald/Star Coach of the Year honors

Coach – Daya Venegas, Brownsville Pace

Brownsville Pace head coach Daya Venegas was proud to coach a District 32-5A title team, especially with the group of girls she had.

Venegas led the Vikings to a 31 season that was capped off by a district title. Venegas said she grew a lot as a coach, like any season, and was able to do with talented seniors and underclassmen – a different journey, she said.

“Team bonding and developing chemistry was an instrumental part of our success, and coaching requires us to grow in the emotional and relationship aspect of the sport,” Venegas said.

Venegas also said it takes a good team to win games, but it takes a village to win a district title, and the Vikings had that – great players, supportive parents, a solid coaching staff, and a wonderful fan base.
