Lyford ready for home game, chance for third straight regional semifinals appearance

LYFORD — Lyford softball has a chance to return to the fourth round for the third straight season, standing in their way is a team they have beaten the last two years in the third round, Corpus Christi London.

Lyford faces London in a three-game series with Game 1 at 6:30 p.m. today in Lyford and then off to Corpus Christi for Game 2 at 5 p.m. Friday and Game 3 after at London.

The Bulldogs are eager for one last home game as the chances of them coming back home are slim to none as the teams they could face will be further and further away.

“I am excited for it,” senior Dakota Martinez said. “I want all of our Lyford people to come out and support.”

Martinez and the Bulldogs had to overcome a game Hebbronville in the second round with two late wins. Martinez leads Lyford in home runs with two.

Lyford’s ReAnn Rivera had the game-winning hit in the eighth inning of Game 2 and Gabriella Rodriguez walked it off in the bottom of the eighth in Game 1.

“It was a lot of pressure,” Rodriguez said. “I just tried to think about everything Garza has told me, get my barrel into play and hit it right up the gut to get the RBI and the win.”

Rodriguez and Rivera have been the pitchers this season for head coach Albert Garza. Both will likely feature in the series and even in each game.

“I feel good, I have a lot of team support that really helps me get through the games,” Rodriguez said.

Offensively, the Bulldogs are patient hitters and when they get on base they are dangerous runners that can score easily from second base with base hits.

Sophomore shortstop Danae Garcia went 2-for-3 with five walks and three runs scored against Hebbronville as the No. 2 hitter in the lineup.

“If we strike first we can take over the game,” Garcia said before hitting an innocent bystander with a foul ball at practice on Wednesday.

Garcia said it is important to be aggressive on the bases especially as the teams they face become stronger. Every run counts.

Lyford beat London 3-0 last season and 10-0 two seasons ago in the third round.

Harlingen South’s Perez signs with OLLU before third-round series

HARLINGEN — Harlingen South’s Yazenia Perez is eighth in the nation on MaxPreps for home runs and will hope to continue that trend at the next level.

The Harlingen South shortstop signed with Our Lady of the Lake University on the eve of the Hawks third round series with Corpus Christi Carroll,

“It feels great, it is amazing going to a program like that,” Perez said. She plans on studying kinesiology while in San Antonio.

Perez is grateful for the chance to play with the No.1 ranked NAIA softball team in the country. The team has multiple former Valley standouts on the roster.

“It is a great program, everybody over there is super friendly and super nice,” Perez said. “It feels like home when you are out there with them.”

Perez has 20 home runs, only three behind first place in the nation for tracked stats on MaxPreps, and is fourth in the state of Texas – only one shy of the top spot.

The shortstop does it from the lead-off role and has 20 home runs on only 42 hits with a batting average of an even .500 headed into the Class 5A Region IV quarterfinals.

“Seeing her hit from the one spot and still being able to hit the ball over the fence while having the run support that she has through the lineup is incredible,”South head softball coach Joey Rios said.

Perez said all the home runs were unexpected, but now that she has – she is realizing what she is capable of at the plate.

“It is great knowing that she is going to the next level, academically and having the chance to go follow her dreams at the next level,” Rios said.

Tigers come to town

Harlingen South faces off with Corpus Christi Carroll in a three-game series with the first game set for 6:30 p.m. today at Harlingen South.

The Tigers defeated PSJA North in the second round to set up the meeting with one of the Valley’s best teams.

Perez is a key player defensively and of course offensively on a South team that has plenty of dangerous hitters, great pitching and defense.

“I think it is going to be a good one, fun and challenging,” Perez said.

Rios said the Hawks are motivated for the game today and are ready for the challenge as well and the heat.

Temperatures are expected over 100 degrees.

Harlingen High seniors ready for regionals; Valley athletes to watch

HARLINGEN — For some Valley high school tennis players this their last chance to make it to state.

At Harlingen High, the Cardinals have numerous seniors hoping to book a spot in state out of the challenging 6A Region IV tournament while other Valley tennis players look to make it back to the dance.

Harlingen High seniors Charlie Hirst and Naomi Macmanus teamed up this year in mixed doubles to give themselves the best chance they could to make it. Hirst and Macmanus are the No.1 boy and girl respectively on the Harlingen High tennis team.

“We have won over 50% of the tournaments we played in this year,” Hirst said. “It is a really good sign of how we are communicating and playing as teammates. I am really proud of how we are doing and I feel really confident going into regionals and state, maybe we can make a run at it.”

Macmanus, Harlingen High’s valedictorian, has won matches at regionals, but in doubles. Two years ago Macmanus went with her sister Julia, also the valedictorian of her class.

If forced to choose between her sister and Hirst as a partner – Naomi would pick her sister to play with, but she has enjoyed playing her final season with Hirst and still keeps in contact with her sister about tennis.

“I think our chances are pretty good as long as we just continue to work our best and be good partners to each other,” Macmanus said.

Hirst also has family lineage tied to the program. Hirst’s late grandfather Jerry Hirst was instrumental in the development of the Harlingen High tennis program and is a member of the RGV Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport in the Valley.

Hirst says he will stay connected with the Harlingen High program as he prepares to hang up his racquet competitively.

“A part of me and a part of my family will always be tied to Harlingen tennis,” he said.

Macmanus and Hirst feel like they have a good shot because of their communication, and being able to put their egos aside.

“We are able to uplift each other, but then also help each other get serious and in the moment,” Macmanus said. “We are able to just fit each others characteristics and personalities really well, especially since we have been playing tennis so long, we know what it takes to be good partners.”

Fellow seniors Will Buford and Julia Pearcy both took home district titles in singles. Buford won the boys singles title for the first time and is proud of finishing strong.

“I hope I make it far,” Buford said about regionals. “I know there is some tough competition up there … I am not done yet, so lets see how far I can make it.”

Buford and Pearcy know the competition is going to be stacked, especially singles.

“I am really hoping to get to the second round at least,” Pearcy said. “I think that I have it in me. I just have to go out and try my best.”

Pearcy, Buford, Hirst and Macmanus are grateful for the time they spent in the Harlingen High tennis program.

Other athletes to watch from Harlingen High is the doubles team of Ashlynn Burns and Olivia Villarreal. Burns is a senior and a captain of the team and Villarreal is a junior with experience in singles at regionals.

Harlingen High’s Charley Vitela and Moises Alcocer won district in boys doubles. They are joined by teammates Ryder Hewson and David Gonzalez.

State Potential

The Valley could have plenty of athletes at state with some potential returners from 2023.

Edinburg North’s Maya Chen had a break out season as a freshman and did better than anybody else from the Valley at state. Chen was the only 6A representative and finished in third place.

Sharyland High has the best program in the Valley.

Watch out for Grace Shahin and Ximena Uresti in girls doubles. The duo went to regionals last year and performed well. On the boys doubles side, Diego Sanchez and Eduardo Gonzalez will be representing the Rattlers in state.

Sharyland High had a boys doubles team make it to state last season. Siblings Shyrabelle Buquel and Fredrich Buquel should make some noise in mixed doubles.

Harlingen South’s Ethan Carter and Diego Garcia made it to state last season after finishing second in regionals behind a duo that graduated from Sharyland High. Garcia and Carter have played together in both team tennis and in the individual season the past two seasons.

Garcia, a junior, qualified for regionals as a freshman playing singles in 6A and Carter is currently a senior.

Harlingen South cruises into round three; Game 3 roundups

SAN DIEGO — Harlingen South made it look easy Saturday in San Diego, really easy.

The Hawks defeated Victoria East 10-0 in six innings to advance to the Class 5A Region IV quarterfinals after also winning Game 1 the night before.

“First and foremost, credit to our Lord and savior, but the girls definitely handled this series with true grit,” Hawks head coach Joey Rios said.

The Hawks have won 26 straight games after taking care of Victoria East to win an area championship. This is their second sweep of the playoffs for Harlingen South, they swept Edinburg Vela in the bi-district round.

Harlingen South was led on Saturday by Amira Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, the future DI athlete, has been in these situations before as a San Benito Greyhound and she dominated Saturday. Her teammates as well, but Rodriguez was on another level, like two or three levels better than Victoria East.

Harlingen South’s defense was on fire, so they never needed the extra run when Rodriguez walked up to the plate to start the bottom of the sixth with the score 9-0. Rodriguez’s swing looked effortless as fans prepared to pack up for the two hour drive home in anticipation for what was coming.

Game, 10-0, Hawks move on.

“I didn’t really think they were going to pitch to me at my last at bat, but they did” Rodriguez said about being surprised if teams elect to pitch to her in certain situations.

Rodriguez said she just tries to stay composed despite it looking easy for her at times at the plate or in the circle.

“I can get emotional at times, but I try to let it out on the good things instead of dwelling on the things that I do not do as well or mistakes that are being made elsewhere, because it is out of my control and I just need to play my game,” she said.

Rodriguez was superb in the circle, only allowing one hit on a dubious call at first. The runner looked half of a step out but picked up the call. Rodriguez also kept her pitch count really low.

Victoria East batters never caught up to Rodriguez as she routinely caused the Titan hitters to groundout or hit easy fly balls and pick up the occasional strike out.

Harlingen South shortstop Yezenia Perez and third baseman Jaylin Mata were on it on Saturday. They fielded fantastic and never had a bad throw to first.

“These girls really play with a lot of heart and grit and they play for each other,” Rios said about his defense’s phenomenal performance.

Mata helped the Hawks out of the top of the fourth with a terrific throw to first to complete a 1–5-3 double play. Rodriguez fielded and pivoted towards Mata who then fired it down to Kailee Silva. It was close.

In the bottom half of the same inning Rodriguez grabbed her signature playoff hit, the grand slam. Rodriguez hit a few during the Greyhounds run to the state tourney in 2023 and she made it 9-0 Saturday.

Harlingen South’s Amira Rodriguez’s grand slam.

Harlingen South junior Lexi Sandoval put the Hawks up 5-0 with a two-run shot in the second inning. Sandoval has had a terrific 2024 season in the circle and hitting for Harlingen South.

Harlingen South’s Lexi Sandoval’s home run.

Rodriguez drove in two runs in the first with a double and Mata drove in a run to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead after an inning.

“They came out and crushed the ball,” Rios said. “Yesterday we were slow coming out with our bats. We found one inning where we manufactured five runs and we slowly built on it. Today, we came out hot.”

The Valley’s decisive Game 3s

Harlingen South watched the PSJA North/CC Carroll series with wide eyes after taking care of business in San Diego.

Coaches scouting would have made it on time to witness PSJA North take Game 2, 10-5, to tie up the series. The Raiders would lose Game 3 though 4-1 right after at Cabaniss in Corpus Christi.

The Raiders come up short of setting up a Valley/Valley third round meeting and the Hawks will have their hands full with a really talented Carroll team.

Brownsville Lopez fought hard to level the series in Brownsville Friday night, but lost to CC Veterans Memorial 13-3 Saturday before the North series. The Eagles have a lot of power in their lineup and they were able to pull away because of it against the Lobos.

If the Lobos would have won they would have taken on La Joya Palmview’s Lobos after Palmview won Game 3 against Sharyland Pioneer 9-0 Saturday evening La Joya.

The Eagles power vs. La Joya Palmview’s Arianna Alaniz, another terrific matchup between Corpus’ best and the Valley’s best.

Last but not least, Weslaco High defeated San Antonio Holmes 11-1 in Zapata. The Panthers wore down Holmes’ stud pitcher that last two days to pick up an easy Game 3 victory.

The Panthers win set up the only Valley/Valley matchup in round three. La Joya High took care of San Antonio Harlan on Thursday and Friday. Coyotes pitcher Arlette Hernandez struck out 32 batters in the series.

This series should be the bee’s knees … it should be good.

Brownsville Lopez takes Game 2; Valley roundup

BROWNSVILLE — Brownsville Lopez’s bats went off in the fifth, the defense picked up some brilliant outs and Jenny Shank had a strong outing in the circle to level the series against Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial with 7-5 victory Friday night in Brownsville.

The Lobos dropped the first game 7-4 in Corpus Christi where they will play Game 3 at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cabaniss.

“They were determined,” Brownsville Lopez head coach Jesse Martinez said. “They left Corpus Christi determined to win this game. They had a look in their face yesterday, they knew what the opponent was and they knew they could have won that game yesterday.”

The Eagles did not go back home quietly after going down 7-0.

Their sense of urgency was apparent as they scored two runs in the sixth and then put up three in the seventh and could have scored more but freshman third baseman Alyssa Lezama played spoiler.

Lezama placed her glove on Eagles junior Jada Zepeda as she tried to hold up at third after a big hit on one out.

“It was a good tag, close play and we got the call,” Martinez said.

Zepeda overran it ever so slightly with Lezama’s glove still on her for the second out. The next batter hit to shortstop Alma Lezama for the routine throw out, but first baseman Fernanda Pulido had to slightly stretch to end the game.

The Lobos finally made decisive contact in the fifth inning after hitting some decent shots throughout the game. Brownsville Lopez was patient, waiting for their pitch and when they did, they found the holes.

“Our bats were hot today,” Martinez said. “We knew we could hit their pitchers.”

Lopez designated hitter Larissa Olguin started things off in the inning with a single, AJ Garcia walked and then Charlene Granado drove in a run, Garcia scored. Shank drove in a run, Alma Lezama doubled, Alyssa hit a sac fly, Pulido hit a RBI double and Adanaris Tovar drove in a run to make it 7-0 when the dust settled.

“Whenever we start a rally everybody is alive and we are just rolling,” Granado said.

Granado scored in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0 after a terrific at bat and base running.

In the top half of the fifth it was Alyssa Lezama making a savvy play with the bases loaded and no outs. Lezama fielded a hard hit ball, tagged the base and then threw out the lead runner at the plate to ensure the Lobos held their 1-0 lead at the time.

Martinez said it was a crucial play and could have been a triple play while Shank said she was grateful for her defense.

“I am proud of Alyssa and AJ they showed out for us.” Shank said.

Shank said it was not her best night pitching and her defense backed up her on everything.

Shank pitched smart though against the Eagles and was great at pitching around some of their best hitters that went deep against Shank in Game 1. Shank said she let her defense do the work.

“The girls see the light and think they are going to go for it,” Martinez said. “They have good pitchers, we have a good hitting squad and I think we are going to hit the ball tomorrow, they are going to hit the ball tomorrow. It is going to be a slugfest. Let’s see who remains standing.”

Valley roundup

RGV HS Softball Scores and Schedule – Area

La Joya High took care of business in San Antonio and are one of the first Valley teams to book a spot in the third round with a 2-0 victory over San Antonio Harlan.

Weslaco High also leveled the series after beating San Antonio Holmes 15-5 in Zapata. Sharyland Pioneer also tied the series with La Joya Palmview by winning 3-1 in eight innings and Harlingen South opened the series against Victoria East with a 6-3 victory in San Diego.

Lyford also picked up a spot in the third round with another close victory against Hebbronville. Lyord’s ReAnn Rivera was the hero this team with a game-winning RBI in the 8th inning to help the Bulldogs to an area title.

Lyford faces Corpus Christi London in the third round. Rio Hondo was eliminated after another close loss to San Diego, losing 5-2.

La Joya Palmview takes Game 1; Valley area roundup

MISSION — Another dominant performance by La Joya Palmview pitcher Arianna Alaniz and an explosion of offense in the fifth inning powered the Lobos past Sharyland Pioneer 5-1 in Game 1 Thursday night at Pioneer.

Alaniz went the distance with 14 strikeouts, leaving her 15 away from 1,000 career punch outs as the series heads back to Palmview for Game 2 and possibly a third if Pioneer wins the second.

Palmview head coach Jessica Cardenas-Russell said her team shook off a slow start and was able to get going while capitalizing on Pioneer mistakes.

“That is what we needed in fifth inning and that inning made the difference,” Cardenas-Russell said. “We were finally able to get our momentum going and were able to keep it through until the end.”

The Lobos were able to make contact for most of the game, but instead of gaps they found Diamondbacks. The fifth inning they found their spots.

Palmview’s Marina Rodriguez and Ximena Alanis led off with singles. Senior Aalysa Longoria walked to load the bases and then Yailyn Trevino, Alanna Gonzalez, Alaniz and Evoria Garcia drove in runs to make it 5-1 when all was said and done.

Longoria is proud of the history making the team has accomplished already. Longoria had a terrific slide at home, getting under the tag to make it 3-1.

“We needed to step it up,” Longoria said. “With the score on the board, we knew we needed to come in clutch, step it up and not only get our hits going but our defense up and just back up our pitcher like always.”

Sharyland Pioneer celebrates at home with Faith Nunez after she went deep against La Joya Palmview Thursday night in Mission. (Andrew Cordero/Special to RGVSports)

Palmview freshman catcher Eissa Flores set the tone early defensively with a perfect throw down to second to pick off a runner. Palmview went down shortly after with a home run by Pioneer’s Faith Nunez.

“I think we were a little nervous in the beginning,” Flores said. “Once [Alaniz] started striking out people we got confidence and started hitting.”

Flores and Longoria both said the team still needs to clean some stuff up for Game 2 and bring the energy.

So-so night for Valley teams

There was a lot of positives Thursday night. La Joya High defeated San Antonio Harlan, Lyford also grabbed a game and Brownsville Lopez, Weslaco High, PSJA North and Rio Hondo look like they could fight back in the series after competitive performances.

It could have been better though for the remaining Valley teams.

RGV HS Softball Scores and Schedule – Area

PSJA High had a golden chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh against San Antonio O’Connor. The Bears had runners on second and third only to fly out near the warning track to lose 4-3 in San Diego.

The Bears had one of the best chances to advance from the 6A/5A teams because of the single game element, but the Panthers came up clutch like they did against Weslaco High last season in the third round.

Weslaco High struggled against SA Holmes’ Nevaeh Herrera, who struck out 11 batters. The Panthers looked like they could be wearing down Herrera late in the game with long at bats, but could not find that big hit to find themselves back in the game.

Brownsville Lopez only lost 7-4 to Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, the District 29-5A champs. Not a bad result that could be turned around in Brownsville Friday night.

It was not all doom and gloom with La Joya High picking up a 1-0 victory, but the Coyotes will need to see it out in San Antonio.

Coyotes ace Arlette Hernandez put in another outstanding performance. Hernandez struck out 20 batters Thursday night in La Joya. The Coyotes have a chance to be the only 6A team standing going into Friday.

Harlingen High was the only 6A/5A team to be run-ruled Thursday night. San Antonio Brennan is the District 29-6A champs.

Lyford also picked up a Game 1 win. The Bulldogs won it in the 8th inning with a walk-off hit by Gabriella Rodriguez. Rio Hondo dropped Game 1 while Santa Rosa was eliminated.

Burnel, Salazar shine for UTRGV at WAC Tourney; Vaqueros have strong showing

HARLINGEN The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s men’s tennis team came into the WAC Tournament ranked last in the conference.

The Vaqueros played their conference opponents hard during the season and went into the WAC Tournament hopeful, said Emilien Burnel, UTRGV’s only senior and its No. 1.

UTRGV came out with a dominant win Thursday over Seattle 4-0 and came up just short of picking up an upset over the top-ranked team in the conference, UT Arlington, on Friday, falling 4-3 at the H-E-B Tennis Center.

“Obviously any time it ends in a loss it is a disappointment, but this team has had its battles over the year. Injuries and things like that,” UTRGV’s men’s tennis head coach Nathan Robinson said. “The guys have just put their heads down and fought.

“For them to be able to put that kind of effort against a team that beat us in the regular season and is the defending conference champions bodes well for what we have coming. I think the Southland should pay attention to what is coming,” Robinson added.

Burnel echoed his coach’s sentiment. Burnel said the team took the regular season to figure out what it is. Three of Burnel’s teammates did not join until January.

UTRGV played its first match after the winter break on Jan. 13.

“When we won against Seattle 4-0 (on Thursday), we knew we could do it and we showed our courage,” Burnel said. “(On Friday), I think this was one of the times where our team had the most energy. Against Arlington, we lost 5-2 in the regular season, today we were ready to give everything we had.”

The match came down to freshman Ivo Isqueiro’s singles match. Isquerio battled back during the second set to force a third, and he battled back again in third when down 5-2 to make it 5-4, but he came up short in an attempt to send his team to the conference finals.

UTRGV was down 1-0 after doubles but picked up the first singles win with Burnel.

“It is important for me to get that point as the No. 1 player, to show my team that they can count on me,” Burnel said.

Burnel, from La Teste-De-Bush, France, said he played his best tennis the past two years in the Valley and that he is going to miss UTRGV.

Burnel easily dispatched UT Arlington’s Joan Torres Espinosa 6-3, 6-4. Burnel beat the WAC’s player of the year for the second time this season.

“We got to see Emi one last time and prove that he is the WAC player of the year,” Robinson said.

Robinson is going to miss Burnel, too.

“He has been the rock that started the major shift in the program,” Robinson said. “He will be irreplaceable, but we are hoping that the guys that come back next year continue to build his legacy.”

UTRGV sophomore and former McAllen Memorial standout Agustin Salazar won his singles match against UT Arlington and was leading his doubles match before Arlington rallied back to win the point. Salazar also won his singles match against Seattle.

Salazar had an up-and-down season but caught some momentum coming into the tourney and had some home court advantage, having played at the tennis center since since he was young.

“I thought it was a good tournament on the personal side for me, but of course as a team we lost,” Salazar said.

Salazar also was impressed with how the team performed despite being an underdog every match.

“He definitely had an up-and-down, rocky year, but his talent is undeniable and his competitiveness is undeniable, and we got to see the Gus that we see every day in practice, in conference, so we are super excited to get him as an upperclassman and see how much more growth he has in him,” Robinson said.

Salazar won his match 6-4, 6-3. Paolo Bonaguro won the other point for the Vaqueros by winning his match 6-1, 6-4.

The WAC tournament championships conclude at 9 a.m. today at the H-E-B Tennis Center in Harlingen.

Lionettes have best finish at regionals, want more

The La Feria girls golf team might have had its best finish at a regional tournament, but it was not good enough for the players.

The Lionettes finished fifth at the Region IV-4A tournament Thursday, only missing out on state by 11 strokes. Not bad for a team that finished near the bottom in 2023.

“We were off a little bit,” La Feria head golf coach David Briones said. “We did not play our best but we played good enough to keep up, and I think if we would have been at our best we could have came out in the top three.”

Briones said the goal was to be at least top five in 2024. The team accomplished that with a group that will have a chance to redeem itself next year. Maria Pizano was the only senior on the team.

Only four scores count from a team of five, and Pizano’s was not one of them for the two-day tournament.

La Feria’s Karina Rios, Miah Munoz, Alliana Briones and Zoe Flores combined for a score of 166-over par, finishing behind Davenport’s 69-over, Fredericksburg’s 87-over, Devine’s 155-over and Calallen’s 161-over.

Flores, Briones, Munoz and Rios are all coming back next year.

Rios did not shy away from admitting her disappointment despite her coach being more optimistic.

“I just got to work harder next year and expect more for myself,” Rios said.

Rios finished in 12th individually out of 95 competitors, 14 strokes off of qualifying individually. The top three finishers did not come from a team in the top three, which does not happen often. The top three schools and top three individuals not on the top three teams qualify for state.

“Hopefully, we come back next year a little stronger,” Briones said. “We will have the base of our team coming back next year, and once we find a new No. 5 we will have a complete team.”

Briones said it was a good experience for his team again as it has shown progression from 2023 to 2024, but next year the goal is not just to improve.

The goal in 2025 is state for the La Feria girls golf team.

Brownsville St. Joseph’s Fran Gamez brings home another state championship in tennis

Brownsville St. Joseph senior Fran Gamez did it again.

Gamez is the TAPPS 5A state boys singles champion for the third straight year after winning the tournament Wednesday in Waco. The senior tennis standout defeated Austin Regent’s Tucker Rannala to capture the state title.

“It feels great, it is an amazing accomplishment,” Gamez said. “I am just very happy, excited, and it feels good when you put in the work and work hard. It pays off.”

Gamez’s toughest state match came against Austin Hyde Park’s Anthony Tegen. Gamez dropped the first set but came back to win the next two for the three-peat opportunity.

“I felt like I was not that consistent,” Gamez said.

Gamez noticed his opponent slowing down from a possible injury, and he took over.

The senior added that his next opponent was tough as well because of the stark contrast he faced in the semifinal round, but still Gamez was poised.

Gamez said the hardest title he won was his sophomore title, his first year as a Bloodhound. Some of his hardest matches have come against UIL opponents or at tournaments.

The St. Joseph star’s last loss in the high school tennis scene came at the hands of former Sharyland High stud Alan Gonzalez last year. Gonzalez is playing NCAA DI tennis at St. Francis University in Pennsylvania.

Gamez’s last loss in a tournament was to UTRGV’s Ivo Isquerio, who was competing with the Vaqueros in the WAC Championships this week at the H.E.B Tennis Center.

“Right now I am just focusing on trying to play in college,” Gamez said. “I am just looking forward, see what happens and keep training. Maybe I can move to a DI or play in play some prize money tournaments.”

Gamez said he belongs at the DI level, even if he has to transfer at a later date.

The three-time state champion was grateful for playing at St. Joseph and will miss playing tennis for the Bloodhounds.
