District 32-6A golf tournament begins with Brownsville Hanna’s boys, girls taking charge

When the green grass finally settled after round 1, it was Brownsville Hanna that ruled the course.

On the girls’ side, sophomore sensation Julie Lucio shot a 70 to help lead the defending league champion Lady Golden Eagles to a team total 323 and take a commanding advantage over second-place Brownsville Veterans (347).

Harlingen South finished the day in third (373) behind a strong performance by Amanda Alvarez, who posted a 76. Alvarez has a good a shot at qualifying for regionals as an individual since the top two finishers not on the top two qualifying teams advance.

Los Fresnos’ Briana Garza also has a good chance at qualifying for regionals as she also posted a 76 on Monday to lead the Lady Falcons, who unfortunately head into today’s action in fifth place.

However, the individual girl to beat is Harlingen High’s Hannah Greer, who carded a 70 on Monday and is undoubtedly one of the most dominate female golfers in the Valley right now.

On the back nine, Greer hit a ball that landed behind a tree, forcing her to take a short chip shot in order to get the ball back on the fairway. Despite the obstacle, Greer composed herself and landed her next shot on the green to ultimately save par.

Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, Santiago Garcia shot an impressive 68 to help Hanna post a team total 305 and stay just ahead of second-place Harlingen High, which shot a 307.

The Cardinals were led by Dylan Martinez, who shot a 72, and Cole Chavart, who posted a 74.

Brownsville Veterans, who won the league crown last year, ended the day in third place at 321. The Chargers were led on Monday by Kevin Gomez, who shot a 79.

Harlingen South (355) and Los Fresnos (372), meanwhile, struggled to a fourth- and fifth-place finish, respectively.

Alex Pimentel led the Hawks with an 83, followed by Joel Huerta, who posted an 89, and Javier Lopez, who carded a 90.

For the Falcons, Josue Ibarra led the team with an 89, Nick Garza shot an 88 and J. Pineda finished with a 93.

Second-round action continues today at 8 a.m. at Tony Butler Golf Course.

The Region IV-6A tournament will be held this year at Republic Golf Course in San Antonio. The boys’ regional tourney gets underway April 11-12 followed by the girls on April 13-14.

District 32-6A golf tourney tees off today

The Lady Eagles will now look to successfully defend their title starting today at Tony Butler Golf Course in Harlingen, with Lucio, once again, expected to lead the charge.

The tournament runs through Tuesday with teams teeing off at 8 a.m. each day.

Lucio was exceptional at Tony Butler earlier this year at the San Benito Invitational where she captured individual gold and helped lead her team to victory.

But while the Lady Eagles may be favorites to repeat as league champs, Los Fresnos, Harlingen High and Brownsville Veterans are a few competitors that may have something to say about that.

The Lady Falcons, led by Briana Garza, match up well against Hanna as does Harlingen, which is led by Hannah Greer, who finished in third place behind Lucio at the San Benito tourney.

On the boys side of things, Brownsville Veterans enters today as the defending champions, but Brownsville Hanna, who narrowly lost last year, is expected to be a prime contender to dethrone the Chargers.

Just like their female counterparts, the Hanna boys did well at the San Benito Invitational, taking home the team title in a dominating fashion.

Led by Alex Cortez, who took home individual gold, the Eagles cruised past second place San Benito and third place Los Fresnos.

However, the Greyhounds played quite well during their meet as Michael Robles, Daniel Guerra, Manuel Zapata, Aaron Gonzales and Christian Cavazos all stepped up.

At stake the next two days is a chance to qualify for the Region IV-6A tournament, which is being held at Republic Golf Course in San Antonio. The boys’ tournament is April 11-12 while the girls’ is set for April 13-14.

The top two finishers at the district meet qualify for regionals along with the first and second place individuals not on a qualifying team.

The state golf tournament is set for April 25-26 at Legacy Hills Golf Course in Georgetown.

Lady Hawks’ Valeria Montero turning heads in her freshman season

While the 6-0, 6-1 sweep over the Lady Falcons’ top player was impressive, the fact that Montero is only a freshman who started playing tennis just a few years ago, made the victory that much more spectacular.

“She is the best freshman I’ve ever had play for me here at South. And at a program like ours, that’s saying quite a lot,” said longtime Hawks tennis coach Noe Stillman of Montero.

“She’s just a natural. She’s a super ball striker and has just taken to the sport. It’s comforting to me as a coach to know that she’ll be around for the next four seasons.”

Montero is actually a student at Harlingen School of Health Professions and, prior to that, attended middle school at IDEA Public Schools.

As good as Montero is at tennis, basketball was her sport of choice for a while.

“But my whole family played tennis, so I just decided to take it up, too” she said. “I guess I’ve been playing for about three years now, but I only started taking it seriously just last year.”

Montero has consistently improved at each tournament she’s competed at this season. Earlier this year, she placed fifth at a tournament in San Antonio and then came in fourth at another before taking silver at a tourney Harlingen South hosted.

The gold she captured at the Los Fresnos Invitational on March 5 solidifies the fact that while she may be a freshman, Montero is a player to be reckoned with.

Even her goals don’t emulate those of a freshman.

While most first-year athletes might aim for winning a district title or qualifying for the regional tournament, Montero doesn’t mess around.

“I want to go to state and win at state,” she said.

She’s got four years to fulfill her lofty goal. However, with her natural talent and passionate drive, don’t be surprised if Montero gets the job done this year.

And three more times afterward.

District 32-6A bolstered with addition of Weslaco, Weslaco East

As expected, Brownsville Lopez and Veterans dropped down to Class 5A, and Weslaco and Weslaco East joined Harlingen, Harlingen South, San Benito, Los Fresnos, Rivera and Hanna to form what will arguably be the toughest league in the Valley starting this fall.

“It’s going to be tough, that’s for sure,” said Harlingen South head football coach Lanny Wilson. “However, we expected it to pan out like this, and I think since we’ve played both Weslaco and Weslaco East in non-district play the past couple of seasons, we know what we’re in for and we’re ready.”

Wilson said that the Hawks will play Edinburg North, PSJA and McAllen in non-district this season. The Hawks will also host Bird Bowl XXIV to open up district play in Week Five.

This past football season, Harlingen, Los Fresnos and San Benito all made the playoffs out of District 32-6A, while Weslaco and East qualified for the postseason out of District 31-6A. Moreover, Rivera is just a couple years removed from winning a share of the 32-6A crown back in 2014.

“We’re all really going to have to battle hard to earn a playoff spot starting next season,” said Harlingen head football coach Manny Gomez. “But I think it’s a great fit with Weslaco and East coming on board. They battle and compete, and that’s the kind of competition we want to surround ourselves with. It’s going to be fun.”

Gomez said that the Cards will open their non-district schedule at home against Mission Veterans, then take on Laredo United South on the road before wrapping up non-conference play in Week Three against San Antonio Reagan in a game to be played in either Corpus Christi, Kingsville or Calallen.

Harlingen and Weslaco have played some epic games the past couple of seasons. In 2014, the Cardinals beat the Panthers 30-29 in a Week Four non-district clash and then the Panthers returned the favor by winning a brutal 3-0 bi-district playoff contest.

San Benito and Weslaco East have also played in non-district action the past two seasons, with East winning in 2014 (42-14) and San Benito in 2015 (47-23).

The Greyhounds are playing Laredo United, San Antonio East Central and McAllen Memorial in non-district. The Battle of the Arroyo, which the ‘Hounds have won the past two seasons, will be played at Harlingen in Week 11.

Meanwhile, the battle between Weslaco and Weslaco East will be played in Week Five with the Wildcats being the home team.

There were no changes in the Valley’s 4A districts.

District 16-4A Division I remains La Feria, Hidalgo, Kingsville King, Grulla and Zapata. Meanwhile, Rio Hondo, Raymondville, Port Isabel, Progreso, Orange Grove and West Oso remain in District 16-4A Division II.

In District 16-3A Division I, Aransas Pass moved up to Class 4A and Santa Gertrudis Academy moved in to join Lyford, Santa Rosa, Bishop, Falfurrias and San Diego.

There was change in District 16-2A Division I as well. Corpus Christi London and Riviera dropped out and Freer was added to join La Villa, Santa Maria, Ben Bolt and Three Rivers.

Lady Cards up to No. 7 in state hoops rankings

The Harlingen Lady Cardinals have definitely been challenged in their past couple of games, but like true warriors they have continued to rise to the occasion.

They have also continued to rise in the latest state rankings as the Lady Red Birds now sit at No. 7 in Class 6A in this week’s Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Tex Preps Basketball Magazine poll.

Thanks to close 49-42 win over Los Fresnos at home last Tuesday as well as a thrilling 42-41 overtime win over Brownsville Veterans on Friday, the Lady Cards are now an unbelievable 23-1 on the season and have won their last 13 in a row. Their one loss of the season came on Nov. 21 against San Antonio Clark during the McAllen Border Bash Tournament.

The only teams ahead of Harlingen in the rankings are Cibolo Steele (25-1), Amarillo (21-4), Plano West (22-3), Dekaney (23-1), Galena Park North Shore (23-1) and No. 1 Duncanville (24-0).

The Lady Cardinals are a very senior-laden team, however against the Lady Chargers last Friday they proved that everyone on the team is capable of contributing as freshman Ariel Leal was instrumental in the one-point win. In overtime, Leal scored five of her 12 points, including a pivotal three-pointer.

This week, the Lady Cards close out the first half of District 32-6A play as they host Brownsville Lopez on Tuesday then take on intracity rival Harlingen South on Friday.

In Class 5A, the Sharyland Lady Rattlers (19-7) continue to hang on in the poll at No. 23. Sharyland and Harlingen remain the only two Valley girls basketball teams that are state ranked.

On the boys side, Brownsville Veterans (20-2) is ranked No. 20 in Class 6A, Edinburg Vela (21-2) is at No. 11 in Class 5A and, last but not least, San Isidro (16-4) is ranked No. 21 in Class 2A.

South’s offense slumps in loss to Hanna

The Hawks’ normally sharp offense simply couldn’t buy a basket during their 65-44 loss, especially in the first half when they scored just 14 points and were held to just two field goals.

Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles’ offense, which was paced by guard Gabe Martinez’s 22 points, overwhelmed the Hawks right from the start.

“We made some shots early and got some confidence. Maybe we’re finally staring to shoot the ball good enough to keep up with our defensive intensity,” said Hanna head coach Todd Barckholtz.

But while Hanna’s D was solid, the Hawks’ lack of offense definitely helped the Eagles.

South scored only six points in the opening quarter and eight in the second as shot after shot refused to fall, even at the free-throw line where the Hawks went 5 of 10 in the second period.

“They had a bad night shooting. I don’t know if it was our defense or they just had an off night shooting, but we capitalized on the situation,” said Barckholtz.

After taking a 14-6 lead after the first quarter, Hanna’s offense poured it on in the second as Martinez scored nine points to help the Eagles go up 29-14 at the half.

In the third frame, the Hawks came out with a bit more intensity and shot somewhat better, but Hanna got scoring from six different players to increase its lead to 46-25 heading into the final period.

The fourth was the Hawks’ best-played quarter as they scored 19 points led by Luke Bradford, who scored six points to finish with 17.

However, the Eagles, who struggled to score early in the quarter, eventually got their rhythm back and also scored 19 to close things out with the 21-point victory.

With the win, the Golden Eagles improved to 2-1 in District 32-6A play while the Hawks fell to 1-2.

“We’re very pleased with this (win). The kids maybe grew up some, maybe grew up a lot tonight,” Barckholtz said.

IDEA San Benito student inks letter of intent with Azusa Pacific University

HARLINGEN — Macie Ziehe, a 17-year-old senior at IDEA San Benito, literally tumbled her way into college recently.

Last month, Macie, a Harlingen native, signed a letter of intent to compete in acrobatics & tumbling at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California, which is located about 26 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

“I’m very excited and very much looking forward to getting out there,” Macie said. “I know it’s a long way from home and, of course, I’ll miss my family, but I’m ready to make the journey. I can’t wait.”

Macie said that early on she seemed destined to attend Baylor University in Waco. However, Azusa made her an offer she couldn’t refuse.

“When I started looking for colleges to go to – keep in mind there are not that many universities that have acrobatics & tumbling programs – I had sent in an application to Azusa, but figured Baylor was going to be where I would end up.

“But Azusa really liked me and told me they wanted to make me a top recruit. So I went out there for a weekend and got to know the campus, the program and the coaches, and I just fell in love with it all. I knew it was where I wanted to go.”

ASU competes as part of the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association and is actually the only university in California that has an acrobatics & tumbling team.

In a nutshell, acrobatics & tumbling is a team sport that combines gymnastics and competitive cheerleading.

During a meet, teams compete against each other in six different rounds, including compulsory, stunt, pyramid, toss, tumbling and team routines. Scoring is based on the difficulty of the routines and the values of each skill demonstrated in each round.

Macie first got involved in gymnastics and competitive dance when she was just 2 years old.

“My parents took me to Palm Valley Gymnastics and I was hooked,” she said. “That place has been like a second home to me. I’ll definitely miss everyone there when I head out to college.”

While at APU, Macie said she plans on getting a degree in applied exercise science and has hopes of one day being a physical therapist.

Lady Cards continue to rise in state hoops rankings

DAVE FAVILA | Staff Writer

After another week and another couple of wins, the Harlingen Lady Cardinals basketball team moved up another spot in the state rankings.

The Lady Cards, who are now 17-1 on the season, moved up to No. 11 in Class 6A on the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Tex Preps Basketball Magazine rankings.

This past week, the Lady Red Birds improved to 3-0 in District 32-6A play with easy wins over Brownsville Hanna (57-45) and San Benito (72-41).

And while many Valley teams are taking a break for the Christmas holidays, Harlingen will play today and Wednesday at the Blizzard Bash Tournament in McAllen.

As in past rankings, the Lady Cardinals continue to trail San Antonio Clark, who is in this week at No. 10 and is the only team to have beaten them this season.

In Class 5A, the Sharyland Lady Rattlers (15-7) dropped to No. 25 after being ranked 21st last week.

On the boys side, Edinburg Vela jumped from No. 23 to 11 in Class 5A after improving to 18-1. Meanwhile in Class 6A, Brownsville Veterans moved up a spot to No. 22 after improving to 15-2 and winning the title at this past weekend’s Tri-City Classic in Pharr.

In Class 3A, Lyford (14-3) remained at No. 25 and in Class 2A, San Isidro (13-2) stayed put at No. 18.

Lady Cardinals up to No. 12 in state hoops rankings

The Harlingen Lady Cardinals continue to impress on the basketball court this season as they recently beat Brownsville Rivera to improve to 15-1 on the season.

They also continue to rise in the state rankings as they moved up to No. 12 in Class 6A on the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Tex Preps Basketball Magazine rankings, which were released Monday.

A few weeks ago, the Lady Cards were ranked 15th.

Their only loss of the season came against San Antonio Clark, which is ranked 11th, at the McAllen Border Bash Tournament last month. Clark beat the Lady Cards 58-29.

Despite the recognition, Lady Cards head coach Ashley Moncivaiz said her team isn’t focused on state rankings.

“It’s an honor for our program to be recognized, but we really want to make our mark in the postseason where it counts,” Moncivaiz said. “The girls are focused on being the best they can every night they step on the court.”

The Lady Red Birds look to improve to 16-1 tonight when they take on Brownsville Hanna in a District 32-6A contest.

The Lady Cards are the only Valley girls team on the Class 6A list right now, but in Class 5A, the Sharyland Lady Rattlers (6-1) are ranked No. 21.

On the boys side, Brownsville Veterans and Edinburg Vela continue to make the grade in Class 6A and 5A, respectively. The Chargers (9-2) are ranked 23rd and the SaberCats (17-1), who won the C.E. Vail Tournament in La Feria this past weekend, are locked in at No. 15.

In Class 3A, the red-hot Lyford Bulldogs (11-2) made the cut at No. 25. The Bulldogs are busy this week. On Monday they played Macedonian Christian Academy, they host Raymondville tonight and on Friday they hit the road to take on San Diego.

Finally, in Class 2A, San Isidro (10-1) continues to impress as the Tigers are ranked 15th.

McHi sweeps the competition at Harlingen’s Winter Splash Bash

The boys’ team won with a score of 415.5 while the girls’ compiled a total of 324 points.

On the boys’ side, the Bulldogs were followed by Brownsville St. Joseph (234) and Los Fresnos (230).

Los Fresnos (261) also took home third place on the girls’ side just ahead of second-place McAllen Memorial (291).

Hosts Harlingen South and Harlingen High, meanwhile, settled for fourth and 11th place, respectively, on the girls’ side, and seventh and eighth, respectively, on the boys’ side.

The McHi boys were paced Errol Lizzotte, who took home gold in both the 100-yard freestyle competition as well as the 100-yard backstroke. McHi also won the 200- and 400- yard freestyle relays.

The McHi girls, meanwhile, didn’t walk away with as many first-place finishes as their male counterparts, but they were consistent throughout and did take gold in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The swimmers were not the only stars at the meet this weekend as this marked the first major event to be held at Harlingen’s Aquatic Center, which opened in April.

Harlingen South head coach Rene Flores was pleased with the facilities.

“Our (school) district has built a top performance aquatic facility and our swimmers are very grateful for a facility that allows them to train for high-performance swimming,” Flores said. “Being our first swim meet, our pool has allowed districts throughout the Valley to see and test our pool. It is a top performance pool built for swimmers to perform at their best.

“Overall, we had 528 swimmers who enjoyed the facilities and the competition.”
