SaldaƱa decides to keep playing, signs with Southwestern

McALLEN — Melanie Saldaña was mired with a decision looming that needed to be made. It was the beginning of her senior season for the McAllen High girls soccer team and the question of whether or not to continue playing soccer at the next level remained.

“I was unsure about playing, and didn’t decide until a couple months back,” Saldaña said.

Her decision was Southwestern University’s gain.

Saldaña, a game-changing defender and midfielder that was the soul of the Bulldogs, signed her national letter of intent Tuesday in front of family, teammates, friends and more to play for the Pirates, an NCAA Div. III university that plays in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Saldaña controlled the field for the 21-1 Bulldogs, who advanced to the Region IV-5A semifinals, also known as the Sweet 16. The Bulldogs moniker on her shirt couldn’t have been a better fit for the midfielder/defender as she took on the biggest assignments and quieted the most explosive scorers every game.

But it almost never became a reality.

“I actually didn’t decide (to play in college) until a couple of months back,” Saldaña said. “But it really had to do with the McHi girls this year. They motivated me so much and gave me reassurance that I should continue playing at the next level and that I was a great player, even though I do have a lot of self doubt. They were there for me and they boosted my confidence so I wasn’t ready to quit it all.”

While Saldaña struggled with the decision, her teammates continued to rely on her to run the show for the powerhouse Bulldogs, whose M.O. all season was to control the tempo, control possession and, for the most part, control their opponents. Saldaña was a key piece in that plan.

During a tight first-round playoff matchup against Edcouch-Elsa, Saldaña asked head coach Patrick Arney if she could just talk to her teammates.

“She said, ‘We just need to talk together,’” Arney said. “She brought them together and showed her desire — real desire — it dawned on her and the other seniors that this could be it. It was just great to see.”

“Melanie has been the best teammate the past three years that I’ve been here,” said junior teammate Mallory Henderson, who led the Bulldogs in goals scored. “She has taught me so much about the game and how to be a better person on and off the field. She’s a great motivator and fires up everybody on the field.”

That’s precisely what her plan was during the season’s final game, a 4-0 loss to Cedar Park. Down at the half, Saldaña received a yellow card for a tackle. She came out of the game for a short time and returned with such renewed vigor that Arney moved her forward to give McHi a spark. Despite not scoring, it was clear that new life was breathed into the team and the Bulldogs went immediately on the attack.

“It was … an exciting moment,” Saldaña said. “It was more of a like a wake up call for us. It woke me up as soon I got back out there — we weren’t going to be done yet and I wanted to give it my all to the very last push.”

Saldaña is not a stranger to the offensive side of the field, playing that as a freshman and some with her club teams, Arney said.

“I think she showed exactly what type of passion she had,” Arney said. “It was a close game at that point and she had a couple chances right off the bat. She gave us a little more speed up front and a good leg. It helped spread their defense a bit.”

Harlingen High wins Region IV-6A championship

SAN ANTONIO – Jose Garcia took the baton with his Harlingen High relay squad in third place. It looked as if he had his work cut out for him.

But, there’s a reason he has the designation of the Valley’s fastest runner.

The exchange was near perfect and so was the sprinter’s final 100 meters. Garcia needed less that half the distance to overtake the two runners in front of him and burn his way across the finish line alone in first. The Cardinals won the regional championship Saturday morning in 41.90 seconds and advanced to the state tournament during the Region IV Class 5A and 6A track meets at Heroes Stadium.

Garcia’s triple gold performance, combined with Harlingen High’s Eric Quilantan’s win in the 400-meter run helped lead the Cardinals to the Region IV-6A boys’ team championship Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals earned 70 points. Converse Judson took second with 53 points and San Antonio Johnson was third with 47 points.

The top two finishers from each event will move on to the state championships in the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium from May 6-8.

“It brings us a lot of joy, and it’s a reflection of the work we put in,” said Efrain Ambriz, the Cardinals’ coach. “Jose and Eric run against each other all the time in the 200, and I think that makes them better. It’s hard for other teams to find quality 200 guys to run against every day. For them to have each other it makes each of them stronger, and they were our big performers today.

“They’ve been leading the team,” he added. “The whole idea is us getting (to state) and bringing back some medals. I think their confidence is at an all-time high, and deservedly so. I don’t think any Valley team has won a 6A region championship in track. That’s a great accomplishment. We’ve won district titles, area titles, but to win a regional title puts us in elite company and shows we’re one of the better programs in the state.”

Garcia didn’t wait long to add to his medals collection for the day. Starting in lane four with a best qualifying time of the day in the 100, Garcia wasted no time pulling from the pack en route to first place to become the region meet’s first double winner of the day. Garcia broke the tape in a time of 10.17 while San Antonio Roosevelt’s John Nazzio captured second. Garcia also holds the region meet record of 10.43, set in 2019. His time Saturday, however, wasn’t a record due to a 4.1-mile per-hour wind, making the time wind-aided and not eligible for a record.

Garcia earned his third gold of the day in the 200-meter run, this time just squeezing ahead again of San Antonio Roosevelt’s Nazzio with a time of 21.07. Nazzio finished in 21.22. The two runners were side-by side for most of the final 70 meters of the race before Garcia put a little distance between the two speedsters in the final 20 meters for this third tape-breaking run.

Harlingen High’s Eric Quilantan also stepped to the top podium spot after he captured the 400-meter run in 48.71, beating Round Rock’s Preston York, with a 48.96, to the line.

Going into the 800-meter finals, Weslaco High’s Amity Ebarb said she wanted to run smart and stick to her plan.

It worked exactly – or maybe even better – than she planned. Trailing Comal Smithson Valley’s Amalie Hills, who held the top qualifying time, on the final turn, Ebarb showed a kick that would make sprinters proud, quickly closing a 30-yard deficit, passing Hills with at least 30 yards to go and easily winning the 800 regional title.

“At the 100 mark I started to kick and I thought, ‘It comes down to who wants it more,’” said Ebarb, whose time of 2 minutes, 10.42 seconds set a meet record held by Megan Rourke of Austin Lake Travis in 2017 of 2:10.72.

Mills finished second in 2:11.03.

“I usually go harder on the first lap than today,” Ebarb said. “But I wanted to have more for that second lap because of the competition out here today.”

PSJA Memorial’s Wiliams Macias continued to show why he’s one of the top distance runners in the state, whether it’s cross country or on the track. Macias captured the boys Class 5A regional title in the 800 with a time of 1:55.74, beating out the next two runners in a tight race. The top three finishers were separated by less than a second.

During the last event of the day, the McAllen High girls — Abby Villafranca, Charlotte Beck, Sabrina Garza and Leslie Sequera — with the second-seeded time of the day, took over the lead on the third leg in the 4×400 relay and finished second to also advance to the state meet.

Harlingen’s Garcia speeds to top time in 100; Weslaco’s Hough wins regional title

8:20 p.m. update: The Region IV Class 5A and 6A track meets are coming out of a lightning delay and is now expected to continue at approximately 8:30 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO — Harlingen High’s Joe Garcia was the fastest qualifier of the day at the Region IV meet Friday at Heroes Stadium in Antonio.

Garcia, who had the top time in the region going into the meet, sped to the finish line in 10.61 seconds to beat out Austin Westlake’s Ashton Torns to the finish line the top two finishers of the event on Saturday will advance to the state tournament.

Garcia holds the meet record already with a blistering 10.43 time during the 2019 meet.

Weslaco High sophomore Jayda Hough set a personal best for the second straight meet, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches and capturing the Region IV-6A high jump championship.

Hough cleared 5-4 to win the area meet and says she’s hoping to set another PR of at least 5-8 at the state meet.

”It’s just surreal right now,” Hough said after stapping off the champions’ podium. “I’m so blessed to have such amazing coaches. I started the season only clearing 4-6 but I believed in myself and redeemed myself.”

”I’m just so thankful right now.”

The meet was delayed twice during the day due to lightning strikes in the area. The first delay lasted approximately 80 minutes and the second lasted a little more than an hour. Some events such as the Class 5A pole vault and several running events, were pending during the delay.

Harlingen High’s Garcia became the Valley’s first regional champ earlier in the day, taking first place in the Class 6A lomg jump with a leap of 23 feet, 6.5 inches. Teammate Eric Quilantan captured third with a jump of 22-11.0

PSJA Memorial’s Wiliams Macias qualified for the Class 5A state meet in the 3,200-meter run. Macias clocked in at 9 minutes, 16.94 seconds, only behind Boerne Champion’s Foster Wilfong at 9:09.68. The two standout long-dis trance runners have battled back and forth for the past two years both in track and cross country and will do so once again at the state meet.

Only some events were finals – including the 3,200 and all field events. The rest were qualifying events for Saturday’s finals, which are set to begin at noon with the 4×100 relay in both classes for both boys and girls the event is scheduled to conclude with the 4×400 at approximately 3:55 followed by awards to team champions.

Below are final results and qualifying results for tomorrow’s finals in the running events. Final events for both 5A and 6A are scheduled to be completed Friday but may be pushed to Saturday morning based on weather conditions.

The top-two finishers from each finals event qualify for the state meet.

Ozuna shoots 76, Falcons within striking distance

McALLEN — Marissa Loya shot a 2-under 70 to lead all golfers and help give San Antonio Reagan a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Region IV-6A Girls Golf Tournament on Monday at Palm View Golf Course.

As a team, Reagan shot a day’s best 298 to hold a slim margin over Austin Westlake at 299. Austin Lake Travis (302), San Antonio Johnson (306) and Austin Vandegrift (307) round out the top five. The tournament concludes today. Four golfers shot sub-80 rounds for Reagan, while the fifth shot 80. All five golfers for Westlake came in under 80.

Loya holds a one-stroke lead over Lake Travis’ Kate Pickrell and Vandegrift’s Sydney Givens. They were the only two golfers to score under par, while two others sit at an even-72.

Los Fresnos, the program’s “Maroon” team, finished the day tied for sixth with Smithson Valley at 330. Junior Allison McGinnis led the Falcons with a 78, while teammate Natali Barrera, a senior, scored a 79. The top three teams and the top three individuals not on those teams will advance to the state tournament. Barrera and McGinnis are the sixth and eighth lowest-scoring girls golfers in the Valley at 79.44 and 82.50, respectively.

The team’s top-scoring golfer during the season, junior Gabriana Garrido, shot an 84 but caught fire during the second nine with a 37.

“I think it was the anticipation of these past two years to finally get to this point, and they started out a bit slow,” Los Fresnos coach Luis Gonzalez said. “They made great turnarounds, though, to get those scores in. Today, it was about learning to let the game flow and the scores will come.

“I have no doubt they will show what they can do tomorrow. I told them to stay focused and their vision and plan for this course is still alive and to stick with it and see what happens.”

The Valley’s scoring leader for the second straight year, Edinburg High senior Madi Ozuna shot a 76, 2 1/2 strokes off her 73.50 average round for the season. The Bobcats, who won the District 31-6A championship by three strokes over Edinburg Vela, is in 15th with a 396, while Vela is 12th with a 381, led by Erika Romero’s 88. Weslaco High, led by Jazlyn Segura’s 82, is 16th at 407.

Harlingen High’s Isabella Bullock shot a 78, Los Fresnos junior Jennifer Laznovsky, shot an 85, coming off a 74 at the district tournament. Abigail Martinez from PSJA High shot a 90. Edinburg North’s Karen Izaguirre shot 102. All three of those girls are among the individuals who advanced from their district tournaments. Laznovsky played for the Los Fresnos “B” team.

The Region IV-6A boys tournament begins Wednesday, also at Palm View.

The Class 6A girls state golf tournament will be held May 10-11 at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.

Ozuna leads Bobcats into regional tournament

Before every golf tournament, Edinburg High’s Madi Ozuna makes sure of two things. The first is that her lucky ball marker is safely in her bag. The other is to end every practice session with a 1-foot putt.

“I like to hear the ball go into the cup,” Ozuna said.

Ozuna, the Rio Grande Valley’s top girls golfer, and her Bobcats team are hoping to have plenty of 1-foot putts Monday and Tuesday while playing in the Region IV-6A tournament at Palm View Golf Course in McAllen. The boys Region IV-6A will take place Wednesday and Thursday, also at Palm View. Tee off time for all four days start at 8 a.m.

The girls and boys Region IV-5A tournament is being held the same days at the Hyatt Hill Country Club in San Antonio.

The top three teams and the top three individuals not on those teams will advance to the state tournament. Austin Vandegrift is ranked first with a 593 team scoring average. Los Fresnos is fourth at 633 and Edinburg High is sixth at 697.

Ozuna, a senior, has dominated play this year and is making her third trip to regionals, the COVID-19 pandemic standing in the way last year of a possible four-year sweep. Her 73.5 scoring average through 12 district rounds is nearly five strokes better than the second-lowest Class 6A scorer, Los Fresnos’ Gabriana Garrido, with a 78.39 average.

Ozuna won the District 31-6A individual title with back-to-back sub-70 rounds, 69-68 and the Bobcats claimed a three-stroke victory over Edinburg Vela for the team championship.

“My year has been a pretty good year,” said Ozuna, who has committed to play golf at UTRGV next year. “I set a goal to keep my average under par and I almost had it. As a team, we’ve been working hard and we’re doing our best golf now.”

The Bobcats went into the district tournament without their No. 2 golfer available and heavy underdogs, but Vanessa Salinas stepped into that role and shot her first career sub-90 round. In fact, Salinas improved her second-day score by 11 strokes, firing a 93 her first day, one stroke off her season best, and following that with a second-day 81.

“She has always had a passion for golf but also dance. This year, though she couldn’t do dance because of COVID so she came out,” Edinburg High head coach Orlando Garza said. “She shot a 137 during her first round, but every single time I saw her practice, she never stayed the same and was always getting better. There was always another notch, another click. She was always improving.”

Ozuna, who last went to the state tournament as a freshman with her team, said she has grown a lot as a player in the past year.

“I know that I’ll have bad shots and I get through it every time. I’ve learned to accept that,” she said. “I can let it go in the past. I grew that way. I can’t change it, so I might as well not dwell over it. I also learned it’s just as important to be a team player, have fun and be confident out there.”

“Nothing fazes her,” Garza said. “She has matured so much. She totally understands herself more and she hardly ever makes a mistake.

Ozuna was practicing Palm View on a windy and wet Saturday, getting a feel for the course, which she is very familiar with.

“Well, the greens were slower than usual,” she said. “But I know they’ll be faster on Monday and Tuesday. It will be fast and smooth but I like the greens for my putting.”

Especially if she’s just a foot away and can hear the ball rattle in the cup, and her lucky ball marker is in her bag.

The tournaments were held Friday and Saturday, with Class 5A at the AISD Burger Activity Center in Austin while Class 6A at the Littleton Gymnasium in San Antonio.

Twenty-four area wrestlers finished in the top three of their respective weight classes to advance to the state tournament, from April 23-24, at the Berry Center in Cypress.

Miranda, a sophomore and the District 16-5Achampion, rolled through the competition in hisweight class, earning pins is all three matches.

He defeated Mark Libiran of Corpus Christi Veterans in the final with a fall at the 4:19 mark.

RGC’s Treviño, a senior and 16-5A champion, clinched the 126-pound class with a tight 4-3 decision over Uvalde’s Reynaldo Perez, the District 14-5A champion.

Pioneer’s Treviño pinned all three opponents she faced, winning the regional title with a fall in 4:56 over Corpus Christi King’s Sirena Hale in the final.

De La Garza, a sophomore and The Monitor’s Co-Newcomer Female Wrestler of the Year last year, won her second straight regional title at 138. She claimed a 15-3 major decision over Comal Canyon senior Alyssa Almanzar. De La Garza started her freshman year with an 18-0 record before losing her first and ended the year 40-7 for McAllen Memorial. De La Garza is 20-0 this year.

Also advancing from the girls Class 5A regional tournament were Rio Grande City’s Elizabeth Gonzales (Sr., 95 pounds), Sharyland High’s Andrea Rubio (Sr., 95), PSJA Southwest’s Graciela Reyes (Sr., 102), Sharyland Pioneer’s Alejandra Briere (Sr., 110); Valley View’s Dafne Aguilar (Sr., 119), McAllen High’s Mariana Bocanegra (Sr., 128), McAllen Memorial’s Ashton Burris (So., 185) and PSJA Memorial’s Lorena Torres (Jr., 185).

RGC girls in first at regional wrestling meet

Four Rio Grande City girls remain on the path toward the state wrestling tournament after the first day of the UIL Region IV wrestling meets held Friday and concluding today.

The Rattlers lead the Region IV-5A team competition going into today’s final round at the AISD Burger Activity Center in Austin with 45 points. Leander Glenn is second with 30 and Corpus Christi King is third with 29 points.

Seniors Elizabeth Gonzalez (13-1) and Emma Benavides (14-0) will compete in the 95- and 110-pound semifinals, respectively, while freshmen Vivien Canales (15-4) and Lia Gutierrez (17-2) will battle in the 128- and 185-pound semis. Gutierrez, who finished third in the District 16-5A tournament, defeated the District 14-5A champion, Gina Guerrero of San Antonio Burbank by a pin at the 3:32 mark.

The 185-pound semifinals include three Valley wrestlers — the top three from District 16-5A including PSJA Memorial junior Lorena Torres (7-0), the district champion, and McAllen Memorial’s Ashton Burris (12-3), a sophomore who defeated the District 13-5A champion by a fall at 2:26 of their match.

Ron Pratt has coached the program since it began in 2004. As in other sports, this year offered its challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially because of the full contact nature of the sport.

“You won’t find anybody to tell you that wasn’t a challenging season,” Pratt said. “I had a roster of 62 but only had 33 showing up to practice. We had all kinds of protocols in place, but we didn’t quarantine even once.

“We set goals of getting zero cases of COVID and winning district and it’s all a testament to the kids. I told them last week, this week and everything else is icing. UIL moved out season from November to March, made it five weeks long and said here is what you can do and our kids got up every morning at 6 and got through it.”

The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the state meet next weekend in Houston. That means any wrestler who wins their semifinal match today automatically punches their ticket to the next level. One other wrestler, coming up through the consolation bracket, will also move on.

Other Class 5A girls semifinalist today include Sharyland High’s Andrea Rubio (senior, 10-3, 95 pounds) and Yarisbeth Zarate (So., 11-2, 165), PSJA Southwest’s Graciela Reyes (senior, 7-2, 102), Sharyland Pioneer’s Alejandra Briere (senior, 13-2, 110), Emily Treviño (senior, 18-0, 119) and Camila Flores (senior, 6-0, 215), La Joya Palmview’s Brooklyn Garza (sophomore, 8-0, 128) and McAllen Memorial’s Serenity De La Garza (sophomore, 17-0, 138).
