Lyford surges past Rio Hondo to stay unbeaten in 32-3A

RIO HONDO — Lyford handed Rio Hondo its first loss of the 2023 season and took over sole possession of first place in District 32-3A with an 11-2 victory Thursday at Rio Hondo High School.

The Bulldogs improve to 15-7 overall and 4-0 in district, while the Bobcats drop to 22-1 on the year and 3-1 in 32-3A.

“Our team’s been battle-tested. We’ve played teams from all over the Valley — 5A, 6A, some of the best 3A teams from the Coastal Bend — so we were ready for it,” Lyford head coach Jose Rocha said. “We came out and played a complete game. Our sophomore pitcher came out, pitched lights out. We had another sophomore come in in relief, and our bats were on. When you hit the ball the way we do, play defense the way we do, it’s going to be hard to lose games and we proved that tonight.”

Lyford took a 5-1 lead into the top of the seventh inning and tacked on six more runs to stack the deck against Rio Hondo.

“I think we just had a meltdown there early on, put ourselves in a hole and we never recovered. Not to take away from Lyford, they’re a great ballclub and we knew that, but we had about three errors that really cost us and gave some runs away,” Rio Hondo head coach Sergio Gonzalez said. “Their pitcher did a great job. We hit the ball hard to players and it just didn’t happen for us today, but we do have a second opportunity at the end of the season, so we’re looking forward to that.”

Lyford sophomore pitcher Jacob Reyna threw a one-hitter with four walks, one earned run and seven strikeouts across six innings for the win.

“I was just trying to throw strikes and letting my defense work because I know they got my back,” Reyna said. “We need to keep working hard and focus on our defense.”

Lyford was active offensively with multi-hit games from Aiden Olivas-Romo, Isaias Gonzalez, Armando De La Garza and Gael Silva. Gonzalez led the Bulldogs with three RBIs, and Olivas-Romo and Silva drove in a pair each.

The Bobcats scored one run during the first on a bunt by Chris Galvan and another during the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch. Rio Hondo starter Caleb Laster struck out 10 in five innings and surrendered just two earned runs.

Rio Hondo will look to bounce back in a district matchup against Progreso at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Rio Hondo High School.

Next for Lyford is a home game against Port Isabel at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Lyford.

Weslaco East holds off Harlingen South in battle of 32-5A’s top squads

WESLACO — Harlingen South and Weslaco East entered Tuesday night tied atop the District 32-5A standings with 10-0 records in league play.

The Wildcats protected their home field and kept their perfect district record intact by defeating the Hawks 4-3 on Tuesday at Weslaco East High School to claim sole possession of first place in 32-5A. The Hawks (16-5, 10-1) and Wildcats (19-2, 11-0) will play Game 2 of their head-to-head series at 7 p.m. Thursday at Harlingen South High School.

“That was a great high school baseball game,” Weslaco East head coach Mike Brown said. “It was a great game between both teams. They made plays, we made plays. It just came down to who would get the upper edge at the end.”

“That was a really good baseball game,” Harlingen South head coach Bryan Aughney said. “… I’m really proud of our guys for fighting. We could have kind of tucked our head when we were down 4-1 against one of the better arms in the Valley in (Alex) Solis. He’s as good as advertised, but proud of our guys. We kept competing, and that’s all we can ask of them. Hopefully we can regroup and get back to it on Thursday.”

The Wildcats scored three runs during the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and wild pitch and error that allowed two runs to cross the plate. East’s Tonio Balboa blasted his third home run of the season with a solo shot during the third for a 4-1 Wildcats lead.

South’s Desmond Cano led the game off with a walk and Daniel Lopez drove him in with an RBI single to center field. The Hawks made it a 4-3 game with a run on an error and a bases-loaded walk during the fourth.

Solis secured the win with seven strikeouts, allowing two earned runs off three hits and two walks in five innings.

Joseph Perez earned the save and protected East’s one-run lead by pitching scoreless sixth and seventh innings. He struck out two, giving up one hit and one walk.

“I knew Joseph could come in and do what he does. He’s a great pitcher, he’s a senior, he’s experienced and he’s hard to rattle,” Brown said. “He’s got great composure, and he came in and did a good job.”

Mission Veterans swept La Joya Palmview with a 5-0 win in Game 1 and 1-0 victory in Game 2 in their two-game series. Jahziel Treviño and Rey Martinez pitched 6.2 scoreless innings in Games 1 and 2, respectively, to shutout the defending 30-5A champion Lobos in back-to-back games.

York’s walk off secures series sweep for UTRGV baseball

EDINBURG — Kade York’s first home run of the season couldn’t have come at a better time for UTRGV baseball.

The Vaqueros’ short stop led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a solo home run to left field for a 9-8 walk off win over Tarleton on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium to clinch a series sweep for UTRGV.

The Vaqueros, who won Game 1 15-5 in seven innings Friday and Game 2 6-2 on Saturday, improved to 15-12 overall and 6-6 in Western Athletic Conference competition.

“It was a really hard fought game. That’s a really tough team over there that’s really talented,” UTRGV head coach Derek Matlock said. “We did a good job of staying in the hunt, staying in the fight. What a good, gritty team to come back and respond and use the ballpark with the wind flying and doing some things with the long ball. What a good job by York in the nine-hole hitting a homer in a big moment to walk us off and get us out of here after a really tough conference start. Now, we’ve won five of six of late and you can breathe a little bit, but it ain’t going to get any easier. We got to keep getting better.”

York, a junior college transfer from Mesa, Arizona, hit his first career home run with UTRGV and was greeted at home plate by an ice bath compliments of a swarm of celebrating Vaqueros.

“In the ninth inning, coach said, ‘sit on a fastball’ and I got one middle-in and got it right,” York said.

Tarleton catcher and Edinburg Vela alumnus Jaime “Mito” Perez put the Texans in front 8-3 with a three-run home run during the sixth.

UTRGV opened the bottom half of the sixth with three-straight hits on a single by Brandon Pimentel, a double by Roberto Gonzalez and an RBI single by Montclair Cain. PSJA High alumnus Jacob Sanchez drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-5. Steven Lancia then hit a three-run homer for the Vaqueros to tie the game at 8.

Zach Tjelmeland (1-1) earned the win by pitching a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.

Next for UTRGV is a nonconference game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg.

Five-run third lifts UTRGV baseball over Tarleton

EDINBURG — UTRGV baseball is one win away from securing its first sweep of Western Athletic Conference action after picking up a 6-2 victory over Tarleton on Saturday in Game 2 of its three-game series at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

The Vaqueros (14-12, 5-6 WAC) put together a five-run third inning to jump on the Texans, forcing Tarleton to play from behind for the final six innings.

Edinburg Vela alumnus RJ Ochoa scored on a wild pitch to start the scoring in the third. Fellow Edinburg Vela alumnus Isaac Lopez laid down a safety squeeze to score junior shortstop Kade York for a 2-0 lead. First baseman Brandon Pimentel followed with an RBI-double and third baseman Roberto Gonzalez put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run home run to left center field. The homer was Gonzalez’s third of the year.

UTRGV threw two arms against the Texans as starter Angelo Cabral (5-0) struck out six in six innings while allowing two runs on five hits and one walk. Tarleton scored both of its runs during the fifth.

Jesus Aldaz closed the show with three innings of hitless relief with six strikeouts to earn his first save of the year.

Pimentel finished 2-for-4 with one home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.

UTRGV will attempt to sweep Tarleton at noon Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg.

“We’ve won four out of five in conference. We’ve had a good couple games and have to keep moving in that direction if we’re going to climb in this tough conference or we’re going to be in trouble fighting it all the way til the end,” UTRGV baseball head coach Derek Matlocok said. “I’m proud of the team. I’m proud of the way we’re playing.”

Tickets can be purchased at UTRGVTickets.com. Fans unable to attend in person can watch domestically on ESPN+ on internationally via WAC International.

Brownsville Lopez scores in extra time to get past Juarez-Lincoln

BROWNSVILLE — Brownsville Lopez and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln played the first 82 minutes of their Region IV-5A quarterfinal playoff matchup to a scoreless stalemate.

During the 83rd minute, however, Lopez defender Jose Padron punched in the game’s only goal with a bicycle kick to send the Lobos to the regional tournament round with a 1-0 victory over the Huskies on Friday at Brownsville Lopez High School.

“We knew they have an excellent team. We knew it, but I’m going give credit to my guys, too — we have a good team, too,” Lopez head coach Amadeo Escandon said. “We told them it’s whoever runs the most, whoever puts more pressure, and at the end of the game, whoever scores that goal when we need to. All thanks to God, that was us. It wasn’t a goal, it was a ‘golazo.’”

Padron lives on the backline of the Lopez defense, but during the 83rd minute, the Lobos drew up a set play and he was there to finish it off with the game-winner.

“He told me he was going to score it,” Escandon said. “We had a set play, and we had told him you have to be there because we had opportunities in the first half, and he was there with perfect timing.”

“I felt really emotional and really happy,” Padron said about drilling the bicycle kick to keep Lopez’s playoff run alive.

The Lobos advance to next week’s regional tournament to face Leander Rouse. Rouse defeated Leander 2-0 on Friday to set up a fourth-round date with Brownsville Lopez.

“Right now, we’re on a high and hopefully we can maintain that and we’re ready for the next phase,” Escandon said.

Juarez-Lincoln’s season comes to an end in Round 3 of the playoffs at 20-3-2 overall.

PSJA High’s Ramirez signs to play baseball at UTRGV

SAN JUAN — UTRGV baseball added one of the top bats in Texas to its 2023 signing class as PSJA High senior catcher Julius Ramirez signed a national letter of intent to play baseball for the Vaqueros on Wednesday at PSJA High School.

“I’ve been working since I was 5 years old when my parents put me in the sport. Not even only baseball, my parents started me off in soccer and I feel that kind of helped me a lot,” he said. “I’ve just been working so hard for this moment and I’m so proud and happy for it.”

Ramirez is a four-year letterman who’s been a key piece in PSJA’s success during his time wearing maroon and white.

Ramirez posted a .451 batting average with four home runs and 28 RBIs as a junior for the District 31-6A champion Bears last season. He was named District 31-6A’s most valuable player and earned a spot on The Monitor’s 2022 All-Area Baseball First Team.

PSJA has played 16 games this season and Ramirez has already hit five home runs, surpassing his junior year total.

Ramirez’s power at the plate has been consistent throughout his playing career, even dating back to his little league days when he first picked up the sport.

“I didn’t know how to play — I was playing soccer. I didn’t know how to play defense, but they put me in the outfield just because I could hit and (power) has always been there,” Ramirez said.

The Bears began District 31-6A play Wednesday, and before joining UTRGV next season, Ramirez’s sights are set on repeating as district champs and putting together a playoff run in his final year at PSJA.

“We want to go at least three or four rounds. We got a great team and we’re starting to click together,” he said.

Ramirez hopes to be the next PSJA High product to become a contributor with the Vaqueros. Former PSJA teammate Jacob Sanchez is currently a junior infielder at UTRGV and has helped current Bears like Ramirez realize they can follow in his footsteps and carve out everyday roles for themselves at the collegiate level.

“It fires me up. My guy Jacob, he’s a starter there and it goes to show us that it can be done and I just want to make it happen,” he said. “I’m going to give it all, my 110%, in the classroom first. That’s the most important thing. After that, I’m going to be the best teammate and best ball player I can be.”

UTRGV unveils renderings of Vaqueros Performance Center

EDINBURG — The home of UTRGV football was unveiled by the UTRGV athletics department Tuesday with the release of renderings of the Vaqueros Performance Center, a 45,000+ square foot facility that will be constructed north of UTRGV Baseball Stadium off Sugar Rd.

The Vaqueros Performance Center will feature a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning facility, an academic success center, a football locker room, football coaches’ offices, two practice fields, a sports medicine facility, a team room with stadium-style seating and multiple meeting rooms.

“As we started this journey several years back, we knew there would be several, if not quite a few milestone days for our football program and sport expansion in general, and today is certainly one of those milestone days,” UTRGV vice president and director of athletics Chasse Conque said. “As we unveil the renderings and plans for the Vaqueros Performance Center, I think just the visuals themselves paint the picture that this is transformation for our athletic program, obviously our football program giving them a primary home, a place that they will live and work and train as student-athletes and coaches, but this is something that will serve our entire athletic department.”

Conque said UTRGV initially put pen to paper on the football facility, which turned into the Vaqueros Performance Center, in late 2019, early 2020.

Completion of the facility is expected by fall 2025 when UTRGV kicks off its inaugural college football season at the Division I level. Construction includes a pair of practice fields for football and soccer, one of which will be made of natural grass and one of synthetic turf, with completion expected by the summer of 2024 when UTRGV football begins its practice year.

“We’re excited it’s finally out in the open, especially because we’re about to hit the road recruiting in the next few weeks and it’s really had an impact with the guys we’re looking at,” head coach Travis Bush said. “It just shows the vision of our university, our administration, the commitment to excellence to make this place the best it can be.”

“This facility puts us in a different league within the Division I FCS landscape. It will be one of the nicest facilities in the country,” Conque said. “I think we’ve been wise with the way that we’re going to use our space. I think we’ve been wise in the way we’re going to have the ability to take care of other programs and utilize this across athletic programs. I can also tell you I know Coach Bush is very excited to get to this day to where he can start sharing this with the world of college athletics, on the recruiting trail, with prospective student-athletes, because I think when people digest what’s being constructed on the northside of our campus here, it’s going to be impressive to them. This will not only serve our program well, but puts us in really good shape across the landscape of college athletics.”

The estimated construction cost of the Vaqueros Performance Center is about $45 million, according to a news release from UTRGV. It’s part of over $80 million in construction projects being completed by UTRGV athletics over the next two and a half years.

“You look at college athletics right now, you want to make sure we give our student-athletes the best and we have to,” Bush said. “That’s the name of the game in recruiting right now. You got to have nice stuff and you got to have new stuff and that’s where student-athletes want to go. As we’re looking in the details, we want to make their daily life the best. To be able to bring these guys in and knowing they’re going to have these facilities when they start playing games in 2025, it’s going to be, to me, an advantage in recruiting.”

The construction of the facility is funded by revenue streams within the athletic department including the Football Founders Society, corporate sponsorships, ticket sales and general fundraising outside of the Football Founders Society, which are all at record levels, according to Conque. In addition, UTRGV is closing in on nearly 1,700 season ticket deposits sold for the 2025 season.

“We’re very proud of that and we’re still raising funds for this project,” Conque said.

UTRGV also announced there are naming opportunities for all facilities, including the Vaqueros Performance Center. The opportunities include head coach and assistant coach offices, meeting rooms, the strength and conditioning facility, practice facilities, and each facility as a whole.

Season ticket deposits for the inaugural season of UTRGV football are still being accepted for $25 per ticket at UTRGVTickets.com.

Edinburg North wins team title, 12 earn gold medals at THSPA State Championships

The Edinburg North Cougars’ boys powerlifting team flexed its muscle at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) State Championships by winning the Division I team state championship Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.

While the Cougars took first as a team, 12 Rio Grande Valley powerlifters won individual state championships in their respective divisions and weight classes over the two-day THSPA state meets Friday and Saturday.

Points are awarded for the top five finishes in each weight class in this manner — 7, 5, the 3, 2 and 1. Each lifter goes through three different sets of lifts — squat, bench press and deadlift. The total weight combined from the three lifts determines the winner.

The Cougars totaled 33 team points led by four state champions, one third-place and one fourth-place finish.

Edinburg North’s four state champs are Christian Gomez, 132-pound weight class (630 squat, 365 bench, 520 deadlift, 1,515 total), Juan Saenz, 165 pounds (635 squat, 405 bench, 590 deadlift, 1,630 total), Allan Benaivdes, 220 pounds (800 squat, 465 bench, 600 deadlift, 1,865 total) and Dante Ramones, 275 pounds (855 squat, 570 bench, 700 deadlift, 2,125 total). North’s Maximiliano Zepeda finished second at 308 pounds (1,955 total) and Devin Aguilar took third at 181 pounds (1,555 total).

Edinburg Vela finished second as a team in Division I with a pair of state champions in Justin Chapa and Marco Diaz and a fourth-place finish from John Vasquez. Chapa won gold at 114 pounds with a 470 squat, 255 bench and 500 deadlift for a 1,225 total. Diaz claimed first at super heavyweight with a 1,905 total — 735 squat, 615 bench and 555 deadlift.

Hidalgo took third in Division II with 19 team points with four lifters posting podium finishes — Dorian Ramirez (State champ, 123 pound weight class), Leonardo Ruiz (second place, 114 pounds), Juventino Guerrero (second place, 132 pounds) and Ruben Campos (fourth place, 181 pounds).

La Villa won third place in Division IV with 12 combined points from 198-pound champion Josue Aguilera (1,475 total) and second place at 308 pounds with Jaime Elissetche (1,770 total).
