Falcons to hold tennis tourney

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

For the third time in four weeks the Metro-area will play host to a tennis tournament.

This time, the Los Fresnos Falcons will play host to the 13-team tournament that will be competed at three different venues and begin at 8 a.m. today and Saturday.

The host school will play, along with Hanna, Porter, Rivera, Pace, Port Isabel, Mercedes, La Feria, Weslaco High, Harlingen High, Raymondville, Rio Hondo and Port Aransas.

Los Fresnos will play host to the girls doubles A and B events and mixed doubles A event. The homecourt advantage could prove beneficial to the mixed doubles A team of Larissa Lopez and Paul Garrate, who won the previous two tournaments at Pace and Hanna.

“We have a couple of good chances (to win),” Los Fresnos coach Bill Sandlin said. “A mixed doubles won a couple first places and I’m hoping girls singles will do well. I hope A boys doubles does well, too, and James Maestro is seeded in the B boys singles.”

The remainder of the matches will be played at Hanna and the Brownsville Tennis Center. Hanna will be host to the girls singles A and B events and boys singles A event. The tennis center will play host to boys doubles A and B, mixed doubles B and boys singles B events.

As far as the tournament layout, it will resemble the tournament at Hanna that was played Feb. 6 and 7.

“We’re going to try to set it up similar to the Hanna tournament,” Los Fresnos coach Bill Sandlin said. “Each player should get three or four guaranteed matches depending on byes.”

Early-round tournament matches will be played today, and the championship matches will be held Saturday.

Hanna finished in second place as a team at its own tournament two weeks ago and is the highest finishing team to also compete at Los Fresnos.

The Falcons’ mixed doubles B team of Miguel Cortez and Kayla Hernandez, who took first place at the Hanna Invitational, also will look to repeat their success.

Other teams present at today’s tournament that will be looking to match their results from the most recent Metro-area tournament will be the Raiders, who had Julissa Rostro win the girls singles A event, and the Cardinals, whose boys doubles A team of David Gracia and Travis Walther and doubles B team of Nick Byrum and Justin MacManes placed first at the Hanna tournament.

This tournament and the La Feria tournament to be played March 20 and 21 will be the final two tournaments for the Falcons before the District 32-6A tournament April 8 and 9, which they will also hold.

Metro-Area Boys Basketball Notes: Brownsville Veterans looking to make a push

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers won their past four games and are prepared to begin their playoff run.

Their most recent victory came Tuesday over the Rivera Raiders. The Chargers (20-12, 9-5 in District 32-6A) were shorthanded, playing without Aaron Villarreal — one of their top players who was sidelined with a sprained ankle — but won 59-48 and are looking toward their bi-district matchup against the Weslaco High Panthers (22-11, 10-2 in District 31-6A) at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in Weslaco.

Moving forward, Brownsville Veterans coach Larry Gibson is pleased with the current state of his team.

“I think we’re playing really good, we’ve won four in a row going into the playoffs,” he said. “I think we can match up with anybody because we’re playing really good right now.”

In regards to Villarreal, Gibson is confident his player will be able to suit up for the Chargers during the bi-district round.

“He’s got a sprained ankle so he’s got a week to get it ready,” Gibson said. “He’ll be ready when we play next (Tuesday).”

METRO-AREA PLAYOFF TEAMS: This year’s playoff pool will feature four Metro-area teams in addition to Brownsville Veterans, two of which come from District 32-6A — the Los Fresnos Falcons and the Hanna Golden Eagles — and one team will come from District 32-5A, the Pace Vikings. Out of District 32-3A, the IDEA Frontier Chargers claimed the third seed and will face the loser of a game Friday between Santa Gertrudis Academy and Falfurrias.

After the final game of the district season, the Falcons (21-11, 10-4) and Eagles (20-7, 10-4) were tied atop District 32-6A with the Harlingen South Hawks (16-14, 10-4), and the No. 1 seed was determined via coin flip.

Los Fresnos was awarded the first seed and will play host to PSJA North (20-10, 8-4 in District 32-5A) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hanna will play a neutral-site game against Edinburg North (18-14, 8-4) at 7 p.m. Monday at Weslaco East.

In District 32-5A, Pace spoiled Donna High’s perfect district record Tuesday with a 56-50 overtime win. Pace (19-12, 11-3) is the No. 2 seed in its district and will face Mission Veterans Memorial (27-7, 7-5) of District 31-5A at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Mission.

FINAL ASSESSMENT: The Rivera Raiders’ season came to a close Tuesday after their loss to Brownsville Veterans.

After a seventh-place finish in District 32-6A, Rivera coach Saul Villarreal looked back on the season with positivity in terms of experience gained for his younger players.

“Hopefully our young guys on J.V. that were picked up this year will be ready to step up next year,” he said. “They’ve had some varsity experience, so hopefully they’ll be ready to step up next year.”

Chargers best Raiders in district finale

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The final game of the District 32-6A season was also parents night at Brownsville Veterans Memorial, and the Chargers provided the home crowd with a win before they begin their playoff run.

Brownsville Veterans (20-12, 9-5 in district) wrapped up the regular season with a 59-48 win over the Rivera Raiders (12-18, 4-10) on Tuesday and will look ahead to the postseason after finishing fourth in the district.

Despite scoring 24 points during the first half and trailing the Raiders, the Chargers gradually improved as the game progressed.

Once Brownsville Veterans passed Rivera early in the third quarter on an Alex Marquez layup, and they didn’t look back.

“We tried to play everybody because it was parents night, and we really didn’t get our rhythm going until the first quarter,” Brownsville Veterans coach Larry Gibson said. “Once the fourth quarter started we really got our rhythm going and started playing good as a team.”

The Raiders did put forth an effort to come back, scoring seven points during the final 1:40 of the third to remain within three points. They then pulled to within one on a Nico Blanco basket early in the fourth.

However, Brownsville Veterans’ offense was at its most efficient after the Blanco putback layup. The Chargers proceeded to score 13 points during the next three minutes, and despite Rivera remaining close, Manny Perez scored six straight points to clinch the victory for Brownsville Veterans.

“We had some turnovers and missed some shots here and there,” Rivera coach Saul Villarreal said. “We didn’t rebound as well as we wanted to. A couple of times they took second and third shots that hurt us.”

The Raiders jumped out to a quick start to the game and led the Chargers after the first and second quarters but failed to sustain the lead.

The Raiders made two early layups to take a 4-0 lead, and Brownsville Veterans didn’t collect its first basket until the 4:48 mark in the first.

However, they strung together six more points the remainder of the quarter and trailed Rivera by just two at 10-8 after the end of the opening period.

The Chargers opened the second with five quick points but stalled for several minutes. The Raiders seized the drought and netted nine points to carry a 26-24 lead into the half.

A trio of players scored 14 points to tie for the lead. Jeremiah Meyers and Marquez had 14 for Brownsville Veterans, and Chris Vasquez had 14 for Rivera. Blanco was the Raiders’ second-leading scorer with 10.

Eagles return to form, clinch playoff trip

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The Hanna Golden Eagles are back to their winning ways.

After a three-game losing streak that threatened their playoff chances, the Eagles punched their ticket to the postseason with a convincing 73-45 home win over the San Benito Greyhounds on Tuesday.

“They grew up. It was all those big, tough road games, we knew that would bring it out of them,” Hanna coach Todd Barckholtz said. “It made them come up another bar.

“We’ve been making silly mistakes here and silly mistakes there, and trying to clean them up. They’re 16, 17 and 18-year-old kids. They’re going to make mistakes. Tonight we learned from them.”

The game featured an abundance of scoring and was close during the early stages. The Eagles got off to a slow start but scored 13 points during the latter half of the opening quarter en route to a 17-14 lead after the first.

San Benito’s Jordan Briones scored his team’s first six points, and after converting five of six layup attempts he paced the Greyhounds with 10 first-quarter points.

Each side’s scoring prowess was absent early in the second. Neither team made a field goal until Hanna’s Alex Herrera hit a layup with 4:25 to go in the half.

Each team turned it on late, and the two squads combined for 18 points after Herrera’s basket.

Hanna led 28-24 at the break, but it wasn’t certain which team would pull ahead.

The Eagles, though, began to assert themselves during the third quarter.

A raucous Hanna fan base contributed to the demise in what was a critical game for each team.

“We didn’t show emotion out there offensively or defensively,” San Benito coach Eddie Abrego said. “For some odd reason something got them. Maybe the fans got them, I don’t know. What I tell the kids is that we don’t want to rely on excuses,we’ve got to rely on ourselves.

“You’ve got to give it to the fans, they rattle you. You’re not supposed to let that affect you, but they got into our heads. Home court always makes a difference.”

Andy Lopez netted 13 points during the third quarter, and Hanna led 54-41 at the start of the final quarter after outscoring the Greyhounds 26-17.

With one final chance to rally, the Greyhounds failed to find the bottom of the net for the entirety of the fourth aside from four late free throws.

Herrera led with 23 points, teammate Ed Messbarger tallied 17 and Lopez added 15. Christian Sierra paced the Greyhounds with 13 points, and Jordan Briones contributed 12.

Falcons earn crucial road win over Chargers

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The Los Fresnos Falcons took a giant step toward securing a playoff berth Friday.

The Falcons’ ability to capitalize from the free-throw line late was the difference in a pivotal 44-37 road win over the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers.

With just less than four minutes remaining in the game, the Falcons (19-10, 9-3 in District 32-6A) trailed by one point at 32-31 when they reached the bonus.

After back-to-back fouls by Sebastian Caldera and Manny Perez, Roy Quesada and Andrew Carrizaleseach hit a pair of free throws to give Los Fresnos a three-point lead.

The Chargers’ Aaron Villarreal converted on a three-point play to tie the game at 37 with two minutes remaining, but Brownsville Veterans (17-12, 6-5) didn’t score for the remainder of the contest.

As the game neared its completion, the Falcons’ Hugo de la Cruz, Quesada and Johnny Gomez were successful on seven of their next eight shots from the charity stripe.

“We struggled offensively, we didn’t do a good job of hitting shots, but we hit some shots at the end and we hit some big free throws,” Los Fresnos coach Marco Hinojosa said. “That’s what won us the game at the end. We hit free throws when it mattered, and finally we got bounces to go our way.”

Brownsville Veterans netted its most points of the game during the first quarter after taking a 13-12 lead into the second.

The Chargers’ shot went cold after that, however, and they were successful on just five field goals on 19 attempts during the second and third quarters. The shooting woes allowed Los Fresnos to keep the game close before pulling away in the final minutes.

“We could not make shots, if you’re in your own gym and can’t make any shots, you’re not going to win,” Brownsville Veterans coach Larry Gibson said. “We scored 37 points in our own gym and that’s embarrassing. The way we shot the ball, I’m embarrassed. It wasn’t that great of defense,it was us not shooting the ball well. We didn’t step up and make shots, and they made shots. They wanted it more than we did.”

Quesada led all scorers with 14 points, and Gomez added 11 for the Falcons. Villarreal led the Chargers with 12 points, followed by Perez and Jeremiah Meyers, who each contributed nine.

Metro-area Boys Basketball Notes: Chargers set sights on high-stakes matchup

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

With just four games remaining in the District 32-6A season, crunch time is nearing for a handful of teams.

Two of those teams — the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers (17-11, 6-4 in district) and Los Fresnos Falcons (18-10, 7-3) — will face each other at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Brownsville for their second meeting of the district season.

The teams first played Jan. 13, and the Falcons bested the Chargers 68-48 behind a 26-point night from point guard Hugo de la Cruz.

As it stands, Brownsville Veterans is tied for fourth with the San Benito Greyhounds and could use a win to remain in the playoff picture.

Fresh off a 60-55 win over the Harlingen High Cardinals on Tuesday night, Chargers coach Larry Gibson said he’d expect his team’s improved man-to-man defense to help in the attempt to slow the threat de la Cruz presents.

“I feel you’ve got to control the point guard,” Gibson said. “If you don’t control him, you’re in trouble. Hugo does a great job for them.

“What we can take away from this game (against Harlingen High) is that our man defense was great. I think it’s a lot better now. We’ll play a lot better man defense against (Los Fresnos) this time.”

FINISHING STRONG

Following a loss to Brownsville Veterans on Tuesday, the Harlingen High Cardinals’ hopes to make the playoffs have been effectively extinguished.

The Cardinals own a 3-7 district record and are four games removed from a postseason spot with four games remaining. With anything less than winning each of their remaining contests, they’ll need to look ahead to next season.

However, Harlingen High coach Greg Yates expects his team to compete through the rest of the year in preparation for the 2015-16 season.

“(The message is to) keep on improving, keep your heads up and take it one game at a time,” Yates said. “Luckily, I started five underclassmen so that’s a positive. It’s nice to have all those kids back. There’s two sophomores and three juniors that are in the starting lineup. I’m looking forward to them to improve because they’ve got a lot of games ahead of them. Not only this year, but next year.”

EAGLES NEED TO WAIT

The Hanna Golden Eagles have been atop the District 32-6A standings since the beginning of the season.

With an 8-1 record in district, Hanna had a chance to secure a playoff berth with wins over the Harlingen South Hawks on Tuesday and Rivera Raiders on Friday.

But the Hawks had different plans.

Harlingen South improved its record to 7-3 with a 63-53 win over Hanna on Tuesday, forcing the Eagles to wait until at least a Feb. 10 road game against Los Fresnos to secure a place in the postseason.

Chargers survive Cardinals at home

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

Whoever blinks first loses, and the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers didn’t blink.

With 42 seconds remaining, the Chargers led the Harlingen High Cardinals 52-48, and the game shifted to the charity stripe.

Brownsville Veterans attempted eight free throws during the final 30 seconds and made each of them, securing a 60-55 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday night in Brownsville.

“I think our defense stood up because I think (Harlingen High has) one of the best offenses in the league,” Brownsville Veterans coach Larry Gibson said. “(Juan Cerrrllo) played real good today, but our key was to shut down (Jordan Wilson), and I think we did a good job of shutting him down.”

After a dominant third quarter in which the Chargers (17-11, 6-4 in District 32-6A) scored 18 points and after which held a 41-30 lead, the Cardinals (17-11, 3-7) stormed back during the fourth.

With 4:23 remaining in the game and trailing by 13, Harlingen High scored eight consecutive points to pull to within five.

The teams battled the game out from the free-throw line during the final 1:30, attempting a combined 17 shots during that span.

Though the Cardinals made all six of their free throws and hit three field goals for 13 points down the stretch, the Chargers’ eight points from the line late ensured the victory.

Brownsville Veterans scored early and often during the first. Jeremiah Meyers led the way with nine points as the Chargers netted 17 during the opening period.

What started as a prolific offensive attack for the Chargers throughout the first quarter quickly deteriorated in the second.Brownsville Veterans made just one field goal and three free throws the remainder of the half.

Similar offensive struggles by the Cardinals, though, helped the Chargers lead 22-19 at halftime. Despite a strong first quarter by Cerrillo, who scored 10 of Harlingen High’s 12 points during the frame, the Cardinals scored just seven points in the second.

Cerrillo’s foul trouble hindered his ability to make a significant impact beyond the first quarter.

“They got off to a little better start than we did,” Harlingen High coach Greg Yates said. “We did an outstanding job there in the second quarter to make it a three-point game, but they got in their runs again and we got in some foul trouble.”

The Chargers’ Aaron Villarreal led all scorers with 19 points and Meyers added 11. Cerrillo scored 15 points for the Cardinals, and Wilson and Elijah Rhodes chipped in 10 points apiece.

Alvarez, Garcia win at Brownsville Tournament

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

St. Joseph Academy’s Fernando Alvarez and Donna North’s Jennifer Garcia won the boys and girls singles championships at the Brownsville Tournament.

The open tournament that had been held at various schools around Brownsville on Friday concluded Saturday morning at host school Pace.

Alvarez defeated Brandon Cuellar of Mercedes 7-6, 6-2 in the boys singles match. After a crucial tiebreak to finish the first set, Alvarez rolled through the second to claim the victory. He cited concentration and mental toughness as the reasons he played so effectively.

“It was a tough match, but I think I was superior,” he said. “I’m really happy (with the way I’ve been playing), but I think I have to work more on my consistency.”

His coach, Sophia Bonas, echoed those statements and has been encouraged by Alvarez’s play of late.

“He was just playing his game,” she said. “I tell him to fight the nerves and play aggressive. He was consistent. He found a way to get out of his frustration when he was feeling it and found a way to get the momentum to pull it off in the second set.

“I was very satisfied with the way he played. He’s been improving throughout the weeks. I’m looking forward to seeing him continue.”

On the girls side, Garcia held off Mercedes’ Crystal Werbiski 6-3, 7-5 after narrowly escaping a late comeback attempt by her opponent.

Garcia held a 4-1 lead in games during the first set, and after Werbiski won the next two Garcia came out on top after winning the eight and ninth game of the first.

Werbiski held on for the majority of the second set, not allowing Garcia to take more than a one-game lead until the ninth game, when Garcia took a 5-3 lead.

Werbiski again fought back to tie the set at five games apiece, but Garcia won the next two to seal the match.

“It was her first time in the semifinals and finals,” Donna North coach Juan Picazo said. “She was nervous. I was very nervous as well.

“It was a good experience for her, and she pulled through. It shows that she’s a tough player.”

Garcia was happy with her performance as well.

“I think I played good,” Garcia said. “I think my strongest part was my confidence.”

Garcia and Donna North will be back in action Feb. 20 in Sharyland.

Falcons boys, girls win district in landslide

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The Los Fresnos Falcons again have proven their dominance.

The boys and girls swim teams went wire to wire during the District 32-6A swim meet, notching their sixth and third consecutive championships, respectively.

“We were afraid at first, we thought it was going to be a lot closer,” Los Fresnos coach Albino Cisneros said. “But after looking at the results, I’m really proud of these kids. They stepped it up.

“When I first got the information about the meet, we weren’t supposed to be this far ahead, we were only supposed to win by maybe 14 points. These kids swam their hearts out for me. They worked hard for me all year long.”

The boys team won with a score of 185 and the girls posted a 155.5. The victory included a pair of boysevents — the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard butterfly — in which Los Fresnos placed first, second and third.

On the girls side, two swimmers — juniors Ivana Besteiro and Kendall House — set school records in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke with times of 25.38 and 1:16.45, respectively.

The reward of a district championship comes after a rocky start to the season. Weather conditions resulted in the Falcons’ inability to use their pool, and they didn’t start the season until three weeks after the other teams.

“It’s been a really rough season because of the weather, but I’m so proud of my team,” said Besteiro, who broke her own record Friday. “I was really happy (to see my time). I can’t wait to go faster next week.”

For House, the record she broke was set before Cisneros started coaching the Falcons.

“I think everybody swam their heart out today,” House said. “Everyone pulled their weight.

“I was excited that my time dropped so much, and I’m really excited about next week.”

Winners of multiple events included the Falcons’ Mark Munoz, who won the 50 and 500 freestyles, Danny Euresti, who won the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, Andrea Moreno, who won the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle, and Besteiro, who won the 100 and 50 freestyles. Hanna’s Maya Athena Imperial won the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, and Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s Jonathan Ashford won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

On the boysside, Brownsville Veterans took second with 120 points and Rivera finished third with 82 points. For the girls, Brownsville Veterans finished in second place with 93.5 points, and Hanna took third with 79 points.

Next week, the Falcons will compete in the regional meet. Based on what Cisneros saw during the Friday’s meet, he likes where his team stands.

“We’re good right now,” he said. “The McAllenschools have their district meet (Saturday). Once we get all that information, we’re going to decide which relay to focus on. They’re tough, but we need that competition. These kids are ready, so we’ll see what happens”

Pace bounces back with win at Porter

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

Two streaks came to an end Friday night at Porter.

The Pace Vikings entered the game on two-game losing streak, and the Porter Cowboys had won four straight.

The teams remained close until the end of the first quarter, then the Vikings (15-11, 7-2 in District 32-5A) pulled away for a 54-38 win.

“We were a lot more aggressive, had a lot more energy, a lot more fire, a lot more teamwork,” Pace coach Jose Luis Ramirez said. “We’ve been preaching that all week.

“We suffered a loss that we shouldn’t have on Tuesday, and you either bounce back or you dwell on it. My kids bounced back, and I was happy to see that today. The way we played today means more than the win.

“All this week it was about playing the game for the love and passion we have for it, not worrying about wins or losses, but going out there and doing what we know we can do.”

After Porter (11-15, 5-3) scored the final four points of the opening quarter to narrow its deficit to one point, Pace answered with a 7-2 run to start the second quarter, capped by a Steven Garza dunk. That’s when the Vikings began to separate themselves.

The Cowboys responded with a 3-pointer but soon gave way to another Pace run in which the Vikings tallied nine consecutive points, including six by Andres Salgado. The Vikings led by 12 points at halftime.

The last time the teams met earlier in the district season, Pace capitalized on Porter’s zone coverage and used accuracy from beyond the arc to beat the Cowboys. That prompted Porter coach Luis Garza to switch to man-to-man defense in an attempt to prevent the same result.

“They’re just a better team right now,” Garza said. “I made a mistake manning up, I should have stayed with what we had been doing well. We had been zoning during our win streak. I made a judgment call, and I think it hurt us more.

“They played better, they were a little hungrier, a little more aggressive than us. The bottom line is, they’ve got our number, they swept us, they were the better team.”

Pace extended its lead to 17 when Salgado opened the third quarter with five more points.

With 2:03 remaining in the quarter, Porter trimmed its deficit to nine, but Pace responded with six points to close the third and two to open the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys trailed by 16 and scored just nine fourth-quarter points.

Salgado was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points, and teammate Angel Muñozadded 10 for Pace. Chris Ramirez led the Cowboys with eight points.
