Elizondo, Raiders edge Bulldogs in OT

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

For the second year in a row, the Rivera Raiders sent the McAllen High Bulldogs home from the playoffs.

Rivera’s Danny Elizondo scored the lone touchdown in overtime to defeat McAllen High 36-29 in a Class 6A Division II area-round match Friday at Sams Memorial Stadium.

“It was an awesome playoff game, and our guys just keep fighting,” Rivera coach Tom Chavez said. “They’re not as big as everyone else, but they just hang in there and keep making the plays enough to win.”

With the game tied at 29 and seconds remaining, the Bulldogs’ Adrian Rodriguez missed a 22-yard field goal to force overtime.

The Raiders elected to play on offense first during overtime, and it took them six plays to find the end zone. Of the six plays, Elizondo rushed five times for 20 yards, including a 3-yard drive for a score.

McAllen High then gained possession with an opportunity to respond, but a strong Rivera defensive effort prevented the Bulldogs from gaining any yards on four plays.

Trailing 29-21, the Raiders were given the chance at forcing overtime after McAllen High missed a 40-yard field goal with just more than four minutes remaining.

A one-handed grab by Edward Rubio on a pass from Danny Elizondo and a two-point conversion by Elizondo knotted the game, prompting a 17-play drive by the Bulldogs that ended with the missed kick.

With the game on the line, Rubio said he knew he had to “go up and make a play.” The catch certainly caught the attention of his quarterback.

“That was an unbelievable catch,” Elizondo said. “(Rubio) is something else. It seems like everything I throw to him, he comes down with it. I saw 1-on-1 coverage and knew I was going to him the whole way.”

The teams were tied at halftime, and McAllen High jumped ahead with a 17-yard pass from Fred Hover to Ricky Rodriguez. But the Raiders outscored the Bulldogs 14-7 during the fourth quarter to clinch a chance at overtime.

The Bulldogs started the game fast, forcing Rivera into a three-and-out on its first possession. McAllen High drove downfield on the ensuing drive, scored on a 10-yard pass from Hover to Mike Garcia and followed it with a two-point conversion to set the tone.

Elizondo answered, though, as he capped a six-play Raiders drive with a run from 10 yards out.

Rivera took command near the beginning of the second quarter when Elizondo’s 29-yard pass found Edward Rubio on fourth down. Kicker Chelin Martinez successfully executed the fake PAT by racing to the pylon, putting his team ahead 15-8.

The BulldogsRodriguez returned the favor, though, running for a 7-yard score — also on fourth down — and the teams ended the half knotted at 15 points apiece.

With the Bulldogs’ season now over, McAllen High coach Kevin Brewer couldn’t help but look back on the impact the senior class had on his program.

“All year, this senior class has led this team with tremendous poise, tremendous character and tremendous leaders,” he said. “We took a step forward with this group with a bi-district championship. I’m speechless about our senior class. It’s a great group of kids.”

The Raiders will face San Antonio Brandeis in the regional round at 7 p.m. next Friday at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville.

Eagles dominate ‘Hounds ahead of BISD bracket stage

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The Hanna Golden Eagles have cleared themselves a path to the championship.

By handing the St. Joseph Academy Bloodhounds a 55-35 loss Friday in the BISD Classic boys varsity tournament, Hanna will be placed into the championship bracket today.

Hanna opened the game with three straight baskets, one by Andy Lopez and two by Alex Herrera, who had a handful of steals to aid in the defensive effort during the first quarter.

Though the Eagles were ahead 12-7, it wasn’t until the second quarter that they pulled away. Efficient shooting extended their lead to 31-15 at halftime, which proved too much for SJA to handle.

“The first half we came out with the intensity we wanted and focused,” Hanna coach Todd Barkholtz said. “We got some good shots and put the pressure on them.”

Lopez hit a 3-pointer to open the second quarter, triggering a hot streak for the Eagles.

Hanna sank six of its next 10 shots to close out the half, including another 3 from Lopez to go with two deep baskets from Andrew Briseño and a 3 from Ed Messbarger.

The ’Hounds looked better at the start of the second half, draining six of their first seven shots to cut the deficit to nine points.

“We’ve got to look at the positives we had there in the third quarter and keep building on that,” St. Joseph coach Sam Lucio said. “(During the second half) we wanted to execute our offense better, pass the ball and not get it stuck in one person’s hands.”

The 12-6 run was powered by Julio Garcia with five points, Sean Cantu with four and Andres Borrego’s 3.

However, after a Hanna timeout, St. Joseph only hit one free throw the remainder of the quarter, halting its effort at a comeback.

The Eagles continued with consistent play and strong defense. The Bloodhounds failed to make a field goal for a nine-minute stretch between the third and fourth quarters, and Hanna spread the ball around as it had the entire game.

The Eagles had three players score in double digits. Herrera led all scorers with 15 points, Briseño added 13 and Lopez chipped in 10. Julio Garcia was the Bloodhounds’ leading scorer with 11 points.

“We’ve got two more chances (today) to get better,” Lucio said. “We’ve got two more games, and this is what we’re using to get ready for our district. Playing good teams like Hanna is going to help us in the long run.”

The Eagles have earned a place in the championship bracket, and Barkholtz is feeling positive about his team moving forward.

“We could always be doing a little better,” he said, “but early on, trying to integrate new guys to varsity, I’m pleased with their hustle.

“We’ll wake up (today) where we want to be.”

On the final day of the tournament, the Bloodhounds will face the Rivera Raiders at 9 a.m., and the Eagles will take on the Hidalgo Pirates at noon. Both games will be held at Pace.

Falcons roll Cowboys in tourney opener

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The Los Fresnos Falcons took advantage of poor shooting by the Porter Cowboys and posted an impressive 58-32 win to open the BISD Classic boys varsity tournament Thursday night at Porter.

Both sides started the game slow, but while Los Fresnos eventually got into a groove, the Cowboys struggled to find the bottom of the net, hitting just one shot on eight attempts during the first quarter.

“We just couldn’t buy a basket,” Porter coach Luis Garza said. “When we get opportunities to hit layups and we don’t capitalize on those, we’re not going to win games.

“I’m really disappointed in this group. We’ve got a couple of seniors that shouldn’t be having those problems. I think it’s something to be concerned about. We need to work on our shooting at practice.”

Ahead 6-5, the Falcons’ Hugo De La Cruz completed an and-1 as well as an additional free throw to close out the first quarter. He then hit a shot to open the second quarter, putting his team in front 12-5.

De La Cruz had 17 points, nine assists and five rebounds to go with two steals. Falcons coach Marco Hinojosa was impressed with the performance, but he has come to expect it.

“I expect a lot from (De La Cruz),” he said. “He’s a leader. If he goes, we go. He showed up and played basketball today, and that’s one of the reasons we won.”

The barrage didn’t stop, and by the time Porter made its first basket of the second quarter, the Cowboys were behind 16-7 with 4:23 remaining in the half.

The Falcons scored 10 straight points to close the half, including a 3-pointer by Lupe Aldrighetti at the buzzer.

The Cowboys trailed 29-14 at halftime, shooting just 4 for 20 during that time.

“We were up by 15 at the half, and I just told the kids to keep on defending,” Hinojosa said, “and they defended very well in the second half.”

The rhythm continued for Los Fresnos when Johnny Gomez scored 7 points midway through the third quarter, fueling an 18-4 run that included six points by De La Cruz and five points by Aldrighetti.

Poor shooting by Porter resulted in futile comeback attempts. The Cowboys scored just eight fourth-quarter points, sprinkling in baskets periodically but failing to put together enough positive stretches due to the Falcons’ consistent scoring and strong defense.

Gomez tied De La Cruz for the points lead with 17, and Aldrighetti added 16. Jesus Garcia led the Cowboys with nine points

Each team will face Kingsvilletoday before being seeded into a bracket for Saturday.

“We can only control what we can control, and that’s our defensive end,” Hinojosa said. “We’ll let the offense take care of itself. If we can control our defensive effort, I think we’ll be in the game.”

Los Fresnos will face Kingsvilleat 11:30 a.m., and Porter will get its turn at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be held at Pace.

BISD tournament set to tip off this weekend

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The 69th annual BISD Classic varsity boys basketball tournament tips off at 6 tonight at various schools throughout Brownsville and will run through Saturday.

A total of 12 teams will compete in this year’s tournament, with the Pace Vikings playing host for all games played Friday and Saturday.

The teams will be separated into four pools consisting of three teams each, with each team playing one another before being seeded into the tournament bracket.

“I thought I paired up the groups evenly so we could have a competitive tournament and definitely a competitive championship,” Pace coach Jose Luis Ramirez said. “We wanted the tournament to be as competitive as it could be, and so far we’ve had a lot of positive feedback from the other coaches that say it looks pretty balanced.”

Pool A will comprise the host school along with Hanna and St. Joseph Academy .

Rivera and Harlingen High will be in Pool B with Hidalgo , and McAllen Rowe will share Pool C with Brownsville Veterans Memorial and Lopez.

Rounding out the tournament in Pool D will be Los Fresnos, Porter and Kingsville .

Pace will open at home against Hanna tonight, and based on what Ramirez has seen, he thinks his team can compete with anybody.

“(This team) is probably the hardest working bunch I’ve had in a long time,” he said. “They are very experienced. We have eight returners, four of which are starters.

“I think the surprising difference for us this year is that it’s not one guy or two guys you need to worry about, it’sseven or eight that are just as capable of being on the floor.

“We had a couple good scrimmages and, like anything else, you hate to count your chickens. We thought we were going to be good, we just hadn’t really seen it, but when the game came and they started to play as hard as they did, it was comforting to know that they had been listening and all that sweat and all that work came together.

Pace plays again at 10 a.m. Friday against St. Joseph, and Bloodhounds coach Sam Lucio is excited to see how his team stacks up against experienced competition.

“Pace and Hanna are both going to be tough,” he said. “We’re going to look to improve and execute better on defense.”

Other action today will include Rivera playing host to Harlingen High, McAllen Rowe traveling to Brownsville Veterans and Los Fresnos playing host to Porter.

P.I.’s Torres signs with UTSA

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

A relentless dedication to her craft finally has paid off for Gabby Torres.

The Port Isabel track & field star signed her national letter of intent to compete in the heptathlon for the University of Texas at San Antonio on Wednesday in front of family, friends and coaches at Port Isabel.

“It’s an amazing feeling to see all the hard work payoff,” Torres said. “There’s a lot of emotion.”

Torres chose UTSA for a number of reasons, but the proximity to her home, athletic staff and facilities swayed her decision.

“One of the main reasons I chose UTSA is because of the coach, Adam Hudson,” she said. “He’s a phenomenal coach. He believes in me and is excited to help me work and get better.

“UTSA is an extremely nice campus, and San Antoniois beautiful. It was just a good fit for me, away from home but not far away from home.”

Coach Monty Stumbaugh praised Torres before the signing, highlighting the aspects that put her in this position.

“She put in the things that make it happen,” coachMonty Stumbaugh said. “She was there in the mornings. She did summer track. She put in all the extra work and time. Those are the kind of kids that get these types of offers.”

Though she has been running since seventh grade, it wasn’t until recently that Torres and her coaches recognized she had the potential to continue her career at the collegiate level.

“Last year, I started improving my (personal records) by a lot,” Torres said. “I started working hard and started hitting good marks.

“A few colleges started sending me letters. Especially after I went to state I thought, ‘Wow, this could really be something.’”

For coach Julie Breedlove, it was the hard work in the weight room that made the difference. Breedlove recalled one particular incident that showed her Torres had what it took.

“When I saw her work start to pick up in the weight room is when I knew,” she said. “There was one day we were trying to max out, and she didn’t hit the max she wanted. You could clearly see that it upset her, and that was the day we knew she was going to really start fighting for what she wanted to do.”

Bloodhounds fend off Chargers

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The game came down to the final seconds, but St. Joseph Academy held on for a 67-65 win over the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers on Tuesday night at St. Joseph.

With just more than one minute remaining, the Bloodhounds held a five-point lead over the Chargers after a Julio Garcia score, but the Chargers called a timeout and shortened the deficit with a 5-2 run.

Aaron Villarreal sank two baskets and Isaiah Torres hit a free throw to cap an and-1 with nine seconds remaining to make the score 66-65 in favor of the ’Hounds.

However, with one second left in the game, Villarreal’s desperation in-bounds pass from the far end of the court flew out of bounds, sealing the Bloodhounds’ victory.

St. Josephwas in the position it was because of strong fourth-quarter defense and an aggressive offense that put it in the bonus.

“I think our defense is what won us this game today,” SJA coach Sam Lucio said. “There were some rough patches there in the third quarter, but in the fourth quarter I think the defense really came through for us.”

The Chargers were playing from behind for most of the game, putting themselves in a deficit during the early stages of each half.

“We came out slow, but I think St. Joe did a good job,” Brownsville Veterans coach Larry Gibson said. “They deserved to win the game tonight. We didn’t execute. That was the worst thing we did today.”

Brownsville Veterans fell behind 9-0 early, missing its first 11 shots. But a 3-pointer by Joseph Guerrero got the Chargers on the board, and they went on a 14-4 run to pull within one point midway through the second quarter.

St. Josephanswered with a run of its own, though, with back-to-back baskets by Sean Cantu and a three-point play from Ian Teo’ong to pull ahead 22-17.

Brownsville Veterans missed its first four shots and allowed Garcia and Cantu to score six straight points.

However, Jeremiah Meyers and Tristan Oguin fought back and pulled the Chargers to within two points. The two teams were tied during the final seconds of the third quarter when Guerrero hit a 3-pointer as time expired.

The fourth quarter mostly was back and forth until Jorge De La Garza and Joey Navarro shot the Bloodhounds to a lead they sustained the rest of the game.

Garcia let the Bloodhounds with 16 points and seven rebounds, and Cantu added 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Meyers led all scorers with 22 points and five steals.

Each team will next play during the Brownsville Tournament that runs from Thursday through Saturday.

Calvillo signs with UC-Davis

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

It was only a matter of time before Jaleah Calvillo of Los Fresnos signed the dotted line to compete in track & field at the college level.

When she committed to the Universityof California-Davison Tuesday, years of hard work came to fruition.

“It was a huge sigh of relief,” she said after she penned her signature. “I was stressed leading up to the decision, and now it’s like my hard work paid off and I’ve been given the opportunity to extend my career in college, and I’m getting another four years to reach my potential.”

When she joins the Aggies next season, Calvillo will compete in the heptathlon, which is a combination of seven different events — the 200-meter run, the 800-meter run, the 100-meter hurdles, the high jump, the long jump, the shot put and the javelin.

Her ability to compete in such a versatile fashion stems from more than one decade of training.

She was in third grade when she’d compete in summer track, which eventually led to middle school and high school, where her love for the sport grew. It didn’t take long for her to realize she had the ability to go places.

“When I got first place in the high jump the summer before my sophomore year, I jumped 5 feet, 6 inches,” Calvillo said. “That’s a collegiate height and first place in some conferences. That’s when I opened my eyes and said, ‘I think I have what it takes to be a collegiate athlete.’”

It didn’t take long for her coaches to recognize Calvillo’s potential either.

“She’s out here every day during track season on time, early, putting in extra hours,” assistant coach Josh Wood said. “She came in early a couple times during the year, and we worked together on the long jump and triple jump. She’s definitely put in the time and the work to get where she is, and I know she’ll continue to do that at the next level.

“After seeing what she did her sophomore and junior year, she showed us she’s got a career in track.”

Long-time high school coach and current Los Fresnos assistant coach Cindy Trevino echoed those sentiments.

“(Calvillo) is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen,” she said. “I’ve been coaching for 30 years in track and other sports, and of all the athletes I’ve seen, I have to put her in the top five kids with the best work ethic. And not only that, she’s one of the best kids ever. She’s always supportive of everybody. It’s always about team, it’s never about herself.”

With several offers from other universities on the table, she was unsure where she would best fit. That was until she received a call from UC-Davis with an offer she couldn’t turn down.

“I got a lot of offers from schools for hurdles and high jump, but UC-Davis’ coach specializes in heptathlon,” Calvillo said. “They’ve got a group of heptathletes, so I’ll have teammates to train with.”

Two weeks ago, when she returned from visiting the UC-Davis campus, she immediately knew it was where she wanted to be.

McAllen Memorial takes top spots at Fall Festival

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The McAllen Memorial Mustangs’ boys and girls swimming and diving teams won at the annual BISD Fall Festival on Saturday at the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center in Brownsville.

The Mustangs’ boys squad totaled 483 points, followed by McAllen High with 348.5 points. Rounding out the top three was Brownsville Veterans Memorial, which had 335 points.

The Mustangs made hay in the relays, placing in the top three in six out of those eight events. The McAllen Memorial boys finished in first place in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, and they took third place in the 400 freestyle relay.

“We did some different events (Saturday) to see what (our team) might be good at,” Mustangs coach Roxanne Balduccisaid. “We kind of played around a little, and I’m a little surprised we won.”

Christopher Rock was an example of a swimmer who competed in events he normally wouldn’t, placing first in the 200 individual medley and second in the 100 breaststroke. In addition to placing in new events, Rock was a member of the Mustangs’ first-place 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays.

“Everybody stepped up to the plate,” Balduccisaid. “Especially the ones that were doing odd events.”

The first-place Lady Mustangs finished with 423.5 points, and McAllen High placed second with 377.5 points. The McAllen Rowe girls took third with 296.4 points.

The McAllen Memorial girls finished in first place in the 400 freestyle relay, second place in the 200 medley and third place in the 200 freestyle relay.

Freshman Hannah Bradford led the way for the Mustangs, placing first in the individual 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke as well as contributing to her team’s 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Brownsville Veterans finished in third place on the boys side and fourth place on the girls side, and though it didn’t win the meet, the team impressed coach Frank Sanchez.

“I think the boys are where they need to be as far as their events go,” he said. “But we’re not in the conditioning shape we would like to be right now, which is fine, we’ll wait for district. The girls did really well today also.

“I’m very pleased with (the team’s) workout and what they’ve been doing at practice. It’s just tweaking a few little technical things that we need to do at practice. Sometimes those make the difference at the meet.”

Three additional swimmers won multiple individual events Saturday. For the boys, First Baptist’s Hugo Carreon won the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle, and Errol Lizzotte won the 50 and 100 freestyle for McAllen High.

Hanna’s Maya Imperial took first place in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.

Strong defense carries Los Fresnos into area round

By ADAM KUJAWSKI,Staff Writer

EDINBURG — The Los Fresnos Falcons’ defense got it done early, and the offense finished the job.

The Falcons held the Edinburg North Cougars scoreless through three quarters en route to a 42-7 win in the bi-district round Friday night at Cats Stadium.

The Cougars took the opening drive into the red zone and appeared to be on their way to a touchdown, but a fumble by quarterback Martin Rodriguez gave Los Fresnos possession deep in its own territory.

“(The defense) played lights out,” Falcons coach Clint Finley said. “They’ve played lights out for the past three weeks now, and I couldn’t be prouder of their effort. They keep working, they keep getting better and that’s what it takes to keep moving on.”

The Falcons’ offense made sure to capitalize when opportunities were presented.

Quarterback Pierce Ruiz drove his team down the field on a 12-play drive that ended with a 6-yard run by Isaac Moreno, putting Los Fresnos on the board first.

At one point during the second quarter, Edinburg North found itself moving the ball well, crossing into Falcons territory.

However, for the second week in a row, Taylor Kage came up with a crucial interception.

“(Kage) is a heck of a football player,” Finley said. “We’ve had him since he was a freshman, and we knew he was a football player way back then. This is the first year he’s played middle linebacker, and he’s really coming into his own and making plays.”

The turnover prompted a quarterback change for the Cougars and gave Los Fresnos prime field position at the 7-yard line of Edinburg North.

“We had our opportunities in the first half,” Edinburg North coach Rene Saenz said. “But our starting quarterback had a couple turnovers, so we felt we should give (Christian Espinoza) an opportunity to rally the troops a little bit.”

The following play, Raul Lopez ran toward the pylon to give the Falcons a 14-0 lead they took into halftime.

The floodgates opened during the early stages of the third quarter when the Los Fresnos offense kicked it into high gear. Azul Barrientos carried the ball 75 yards on the first play of the half to expand the lead.

Then, following a Cougars fumble on the ensuing possession, Ruiz found Lopez from 44 yards out for the Falcons’ second score in as many plays to start the half.

Los Fresnos piled on two more touchdowns during the third quarter on runs of 1 and 12 yards by Moreno and Sammy Cruz, respectively.

Espinoza eliminated the shutout threat for the Cougars with 5:17 remaining in the game on a 5-yard run.

Looking back on the season, Saenz is proud of his team’s ability to muscle through a tough District 31-6A schedule.

“The kids achieved a lot just by qualifying because it was a tough district all the way around,” Saenz said. “Los Fresnos played a good, solid game. They were more mature than we were tonight, but we’ll be back next year.”

The Falcons will face Del Rio, which is coming off a 35-20 win over McAllen Memorial, in the area round at a time and date that is yet to be determined.

“Del Rio is a heck of a football team,” Finley said. “They’ve seen some good football, so I’m sure we’ll have our hands full.”

Lady Falcons ready for regional semifinal

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

Following Tuesday’s regional quarterfinal victory, the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons punched their ticket to play in a regional semifinal match against San Antonio Churchill at 6 p.m. Friday in San Antonio.

While Los Fresnos has accomplished its first goal, which was to make it to the Sweet 16, it isn’t content with getting this far.

“There’s unfinished business,” Lady Falcons coach Becky Woods said. “I want to get these girls to Garland(where the state tournament will be held). And if we’re all clicking on one night, I feel sorry for whoever’s across the court from us because I think I have the talent, the chemistry and the athletes on this team to get it done.”

It’s taken three wins for Los Fresnos to get to San Antonio. During the bi-district round of the tournament, it breezed by Weslaco High and handed a tough opponent in McAllen Memorial a loss in the area round.

However, Tuesday’s win over the McAllen Rowe Lady Warriors didn’t come as easily.

The Lady Falcons needed to overcame several attack and service errors but found their stride at just the right time to win the match.

Woods knows errors can’t be a part of the equation if her team is going to advance again.

“I think they were nervous,” Woods said. “We were playing safe. If we start playing these tipping games, it’s not going to work.

“We may get down, but we need to fight back, just like we did (Tuesday) night.”

The Lady Falcons competed in an invitational tournament in San Antoniobefore the season began, and though they didn’t meet up with Churchill, they saw teams of a similar talent level.

Based on what Woods has seen, she thinks it can go toe-to-toe with any team this weekend.

“We match up size-wise with (Churchill),” she said, “and I think I have the better athletes. But (Churchill has) strong, powerful hitters. If we can execute our blocks, play good defense and if our offense does its job, we can win.”

Churchill has only lost one match since Sept. 23 and aside from a close, five-game match against Northside O’Connor in the area round, has won each of its postseason matches in convincing fashion. It won 3-0 in the bi-district round against Cibolo Steele, which defeated a shorthanded Los Fresnos team earlier in the season.

“After we got done with the regular season, I told the girls they need five games to get to state,” Woods said. “Well, we’ve eliminated three. Now I told them they need four to be state champions, so let’s count them down again. We’re taking it one game at a time.
