Edinburg Economedes HC Van de Merghel resigns

EDINBURG — Edinburg Economedes football head coach and athletic coordinator Sean Van de Merghel resigned from his position Tuesday to accept a co-offensive coordinator position at DeSoto, he confirmed.

Van de Merghel spent one year as the Jaguars’ head coach. Economedes finished the 2021 season 2-8 overall and 1-7 in District 31-6A play.

Prior to his time as head coach at Economedes, Van de Merghel was Edinburg Vela’s offensive coordinator for four seasons, winning three district championships while running one of the top offenses in the Rio Grande Valley.

Van de Meghel’s coaching stops before the RGV included at Laredo United, Laredo United South, Sunset High and Hillcrest High in Dallas, and Reynolds High in Oregon.

Edinburg Economedes’ new head coach will be the program’s third in three years. Former head coach Gabe Peña, who spent 10 years at the helm, was reassigned at the end of the 2020 season, leading to Van de Merghel’s hiring. Economedes has missed the postseason five years in a row.
