HARLINGEN — The Los Fresnos Falcons took home first in both the boys and girls team standings at the District 32-6A swimming & diving meet Friday at the Harlingen CISD Aquatic Center.
The Los Fresnos boys finished with 168 points. Brownsville Hanna took second with 86, and Harlingen High finished third with 78.
The Lady Falcons, with 163 points, edged Harlingen South for first. The Lady Hawks finished with 151 points, and the Lady Cards placed third with 97 points.
“Each of us had to equally contribute because this year we did have a pretty small team,” Los Fresnos swim captain Ariana Mancillas said. “We all had to pitch in even more than what we all usually do. The hard work paid off.”
Los Fresnos put in great performances Thursday and Friday. Junior diver Evangeline Wrinkle set a record on her dive Thursday and senior Angel Lopez won his dive to help start the team off strong.
Los Fresnos studs junior Jada Ashford and Jayden Crews had a great day in the pool. Ashford won everything in which she competed, and Crews performed well after returning from an injury that kept him out of the pool for one month.
“I am pretty pumped right now,” Ashford said. “I am excited to be swimming a couple of new events. I am ready for regionals and state.”
Said Crews, “Honestly, I do not feel 100 percent happy about my performance. I have been really close to school records, but I recently got injured. Took a whole month off of swim. I could have done better.”
Harlingen High and Harlingen South received some impressive relay and individual performances from underclassmen.
Lady Cards freshman Giovanna Pierami won the 200-yard freestyle event.
“I was nervous in the beginning, but I have done it before and I knew I could do it again,” Pierami said. “I am very excited about regionals.”
Harlingen South’s Isaac Oviedo took the 500 free, and sophomore Mia Gonzalez won the 50 free and was on the 400 free relay.
“There is room for improvement,” Oviedo said. “The whole team was awesome, and I could not have done it without them. They are my family.”
Said Gonzalez, “I am proud of how I performed today. I could have done better. I am proud of our relay performances, all the girls. The team has come far. We are mainly underclassmen trying to keep up with all these seniors, and we came together today.”
Brownsville Hanna’s Ricardo Rodriguez won the 100 free with a great time of 49.99 and helped his relay teams to victory.
“I am proud of all the team,” Rodriguez said. “I am glad of the outcomes in the relays. At regionals we are going all out and hopefully break a record or go to state.”
Two brothers from Weslaco High, Henry and George Sander, won individual events but met up at the 100 breaststroke event. Older brother Henry came out the superior Sander.
“It has been a pretty long and difficult year, but I have put in the work to be the best that I can,” Henry Sander said. “I dropped a whole second on my 200 IM. I have a decent chance of going to state. I feel good going into regionals.”
The regional meet will be held next week at Brownsville ISD’s Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center.
