BROWNSVILLE — The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers are District 32-5A boys and girls swimming & diving champions again.
The Chargers finished with 183 points to beat out Weslaco East and PSJA Southwest for first. Those two teams tied for second with 94 points.
The Lady Chargers finished first with 173 points. They beat out Brownsville Lopez and PSJA Memorial.
The meet started with a thrilling finish in the girls 200-yard medley relay. Dariela Munoz was down a few lengths when she dove into the pool as the anchor for the relay.
“It was up to me to win, so I gave it my all,” Munoz said. “I saw the girl in front of me. I just had to kick fast. I had to catch her.”
The Lady Chargers’ swimmers are all young and fast. Carolina Meza, Mia Marin-Mera and Frida Munoz placed first in individual races and were on various winning relays with teammates.
“I did not expect to lower my time on (individual medley) as much as I did,” said Marin-Mera, who lowered her 200 IM time by 11 seconds. “I am excited for regionals and to see what I can do.”
Said Frida Munoz, “I like that I got first place, but I did not like my time.”
In the 100 freestyle, Frida beat sister Dariela to win first place.
“I am not sure that I should be saying this, but I feel good. She is my biggest competitor right now,” Frida Munoz said with a smile.
The Lady Wildcats competed well, too. Hailey Soliz, Nikki Soliz and Janet Gonzalez won individual races.
“Excited. I am glad we made it to regionals, but I am pretty nervous,” Soliz said. “I could have done better today, but I had torn a muscle in my back.”
Said Gonzalez, “We had a good season. We broke some school records as individuals and on relays. We did good today and are excited for regionals.”
Pace Lady Vikings senior Allison Gonzalez will be going to the regional meet one last time.
“I feel really good. It is exciting to go back and try it one last time,” she said. “We all did our best today, and it showed.”
Allison Gonzalez, Ava Davies, Andrea De Ochoa and Miranda Ortiz dropped 13 seconds to finish third in the 200 freestyle relay. The same team also took second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Chargers swimmers Diego Gonzalez and David Perez earned first in everything they did.
“We did not really taper for district,” Diego Gonzalez said. “This week, we will taper for regionals. We are looking to get personal records at regionals.”
Said Perez, “I feel good after coming back from Christmas break and getting COVID. Got back in the pool feeling all right, thankful I got over that quickly, and right now I feel like I am peaking. We are going to taper and get ready for regionals.”
PSJA Southwest’s Isaac Velasquez came in first in the 50 and 100 free. Velasquez is looking forward to the regional meet.
“Well, right now I do not think I did that well,” Velasquez said. “On the 50, I broke out too soon, and on the 100 my streamline broke. I am still training hard, and we will see what happens next week.”
The Region VIII-5A meet will be held next week in Corpus Christi.
