Stevens runs wild to lift Cowboys over Wolverines

BROWNSVILLE — Brownsville Porter senior quarterback Alejandro Stevens sat out most of last season with an injured collarbone.

Stevens rushed for four touchdowns against PSJA Memorial Thursday night, picking up a 34-13 non-district win.

“It feels right, that is all I can say,” Stevens said. “My teammates work hard; I help motivate them to work hard and it shows.”

Porter (2-0) leaned heavy on seniors Stevens and Gunnar Williams against the Wolverines (1-1) in the second half. The Cowboys used both Stevens and Williams at quarterback, giving them designed running plays from the quarterback position to wear down the Wolverines.

“To get these wins feels amazing,” Stevens said.

Porter equaled their win total from last season, two, and have another winnable matchup against Donna North next week.

After scoring a 23- yard touchdown to put Porter up 20-13, on the next drive, Stevens found daylight from 13 yards following a scrum to put the Cowboys up 27-13 early in the fourth quarter.

A 6-yard touchdown by Williams sealed the win late in the fourth quarter.

PSJA Memorial quarterback Ryan Reyna capped off a 98-yard drive with a 1-yard run to tie the game at 13, but after that it was all Porter. The Cowboys’ defense buckled down, especially on fourth down.

“We knew it was going to be a tough and close game,” Porter coach Carlos Uresti said. “I told the kids beforehand, ‘We are pretty evenly matched, all it is going to take is giving us all you got’. That is what they did today, they are tied for a reason. I am extremely proud of their efforts on offense, defense, special teams, you name it. These guys gave it all they got and that is why we got the win tonight.”

Fumbles and a turnover on downs sandwiched two good running plays by the quarterbacks in the first half.

Reyna dropped a snap out of the gun, but the delay opened up the hole for the left-handed quarterback. Reyna breezed by the Porter defense from 26 yards to tie the game at 6 before the half.

Stevens opened the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown run. The senior went untouched on the misdirection play to give the Cowboys the opening 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.
