RGV Football Sub-5A Notebook

The Rio Grande Valley’s six-man football team, the Brownsville Jubilee Titans, are alive and kicking.

The Titans (3-1) have not played since a Sep. 24 loss to Annapolis Christian Academy, the Titans’ only loss this season.

“It was 45-0, they ran three different packages that we were prepared for, they just executed a lot better than we did,” Brownsville Jubilee head coach Sam Martinez said. “We got a loss under our belt, unfortunately.”

Annapolis Christian Academy was the TCAL Division 2 state champion in 2021.

“You learn a lot from your losses,” Martinez said. “Your wins, and if you know that you have a better team, you kind of erase those mistakes and not dig into them. We got exposed on certain things and we kind of neglected the little things during the game, even ourselves as coaches. Unfortunately, that is what happened.”

The Titans defeated Corpus Christi Wings 53-7 and Corpus Christi Arlington Heights 71-26. The third win was a forfeit, the forfeit made Brownsville Jubilee seek a game, they found one and defeated the Victoria Cobras 56-0.

Ricardo Castillo‘s 1,010 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, as well as Alan Barron‘s 1,232 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns lead the Titans.

Brownsville Jubilee takes on Corpus Christi Arlington Heights at 7 p.m. today at Corpus Christi Arlington Heights.

MARICHALAR RECOGNIZED FOR WIN

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football named Santa Rosa head coach Joe Marichalar the Class 3A Week 6 Coach of the Week for Santa Rosa’s 21-20 District 16-3A DII win over Odem.

The award is a nod to the players, Marichalar said.

“It is to them, and us increasing our faith,” Marichalar said. “We have a lot of belief in our Lord, we pray together as a team and we do all the little things right. I am just a head coach, this is nothing about me, it is about our kids, community and our coaches.”

Marichalar took over the Warriors on the first day of practice in 2021. The Warriors went 2-8 in 2021 and are 5-1, 2-0 in 2022.

“We are trying to create a culture and a positive atmosphere for our kids,” Marichalar said.

The Warriors face Taft (3-2, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. today at Greyhound Stadium in Taft.

LYFORD’S DEFENSE READY FOR DISTRICT

Lyford’s defense has tightened up after giving up 41 points to Port Isabel in the opening game of the season. The Bulldogs’ defense has only given up 13 points during the past four games.

Hebbronville scored two points on Lyford when it returned a 2-point conversion attempt the other way to score. Lyford won the non-district game 28-2.

“The defense has been doing a heck of a job the last four games,” Lyford head coach Jerry Jauregui said. “The first game was not Bulldog defense. The last four games they have had two shutouts. They have been doing good.”

The Bulldogs gained confidence after shutting out Raymondville 14-0, Jauregui said.

The Bulldogs (4-1) begin District 16-3A DI against Falfurrias (4-1) at 7:30 p.m. today at Jersey Bull Stadium in Falfurrias.
