Mercedes opens District 15-5A DII with win over Valley View

PHARR — Mercedes Tigers playmaker Tyrell Treviño made it look effortless when he found the edge of the Valley View Tigers defense Thursday night.

Treviño rushed for four touchdowns as Mercedes (3-3, 1-0) opened District 15-5A DII on the road with a 41-16 win over Valley View (0-6, 0-1).

“They were crucial, explosive plays (that) take the wind out of your opponents and obviously gives us a bigger lead,” Mercedes head coach Roger Adame said.

Treviño responded to Valley View’s second-half opening touchdown drive with a 70-yard touchdown run. The athlete found the edge quickly and breezed past a couple of defenders for the touchdown.

On the next drive, the senior punched his fourth touchdown from 3 yards to give the Tigers a 41-16 lead early in the fourth quarter.

“We are excited, any time you can get a district win is a good thing,” Adame said. “Our goal the past two weeks was to be 1-0. We have five games in this district, so every game is crucial.”

Valley View opened the second half with a long drive that resulted in a 2-yard touchdown by running back Juan Chavez. The Tigers touchdown cut the Mercedes advantage to 27-16.

Treviño rushed for his second touchdown of the night when Valley View was creeping back into the game. The running back took a sweep 80 yards, beating three Tigers on the sideline when it looked like he would be tackled.

The long run put Mercedes up 27-7 as halftime loomed.

The touchdown provided Mercedes with breathing room after Valley View quarterback Jayden Rosillo found his receiver Daniel Negrete behind the Mercedes defense for a 65-yard touchdown.

Mercedes quarterback Joe Cisneros found receiver Jaazaniah Gonzales for a 15-yard touchdown in the second quarter to put the Tigers up 20-0.

Mercedes running back Ethan Anciso opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, and Treviño scored on the next drive to give the Tigers an early 12-0 lead.

“I loved the way our offense came out,” Adame said. “They moved the ball and put up another 40 points again. We have explosive playmakers, and our offensive line continues to be physical. Defensively, we had some bend-but-do-not-break moments, they were flying to the ball. Overall, proud of our guys.”
