Chargers dominate Vikings

BROWNSVILLE — The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers picked up a convincing 57-7 District 16-5A DI win Thursday night at Sams Memorial Stadium.

The Chargers dominated the Brownsville Pace Vikings from start to finish.

“I thought we got out early and was able to control the tempo of the game, which was important, something that I did not think we did really well last week,” Brownsville Veterans Memorial head coach Kelley Lee said. “Happy with that, and thought we played well all three phases.”

Brownsville Veterans running back Michael Mchale scored a late touchdown to put the Chargers up 57-7 after an interception by lineman Matthew Pinon. The Chargers had four interceptions on the day, one each by Gilbert Trillo, Reece Sampayo and an interception taken back for six points by linebacker Jaime Martinez.

Martinez’s pick-six made it 50-7. Sampayo found Gerry Gomez for 24 yards to make it 43-7 and Bryan Chavez scored from a yard out to make it 36-7, his fourth rushing touchdown of the day and his 15th of the season.

Brownsville Pace found life on the opening kick return. Danny Delgado took it back 95 yards to cut the lead to 29-7, but the Chargers offense was on a roll tonight.

Chavez scored three first-half touchdown runs as the Brownsville Veterans moved the ball at will with the triple-option offense. His third touchdown, a 3-yarder, put the Chargers up 29-0 with 1:31 seconds left in the half.

Chavez’s longest touchdown, his second, was from 17 yards. The holes were massive for the fullback to navigate, the seas parted for his first touchdown from 8 yards as he trotted into the end zone.

Martinez punched in the first touchdown after the Chargers started the drive from their own 42-yard line. Martinez capped off the 57-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.

“Just got to get a little better at everything,” Lee said. “It is that point of the year where you are going have to be playing good football to achieve your goals, we want to get better in all three phases.”

Brownsville Veterans Memorial (5-2, 2-1) take on Donna North (2-4, 0-2) at 7 p.m. at Benny LaPrade Stadium in Donna. Brownsville Pace (3-4, 2-1) has a big game against Donna High (5-1, 1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Sams Memorial Stadium.
