UTRGV women’s basketball set for home opener vs. Northern Colorado

After a battle against Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State and a win over McNeese State to start the 2022-23 season, the UTRGV women’s basketball team is set to tip off its first home game of the new campaign against Northern Colorado at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg.

“We’re pumped up. We’re ready for our fans, our band, cheerleaders, dance team, just to have that home atmosphere,” UTRGV head coach Lane Lord said. “It’s been a while since we’ve had a home game, so we’re excited to get the first one going.”

The Vaqueros (1-1) lost their season opener against Oklahoma State 95-63 last Monday. Sophomore guard Iyana Dorsey and sophomore forward Deborah Ogayemi led UTRGV with 16 points apiece in the loss. In a bounce back effort against McNeese State three days later, junior guard Mele Kailahi carried the load offensively with 21 points and eight rebounds in a 68-60 victory.

Northern Colorado is off to a 2-0 start this season with wins over Northern New Mexico College (91-50) and Denver (77-68).
