RGV’s sub-5A volleyball teams exit playoffs

San Isidro, San Perlita and Lyford, the last three sub-5A teams from the Rio Grande Valley, finished their seasons in the regional quarterfinals of the UIL playoffs Tuesday night at various sites across South Texas.

San Isidro, the District 32-1A champion, lost to D’Hanis in three sets on Tuesday night at Kenedy High School.

This is the Tigers’ first year under head coach Trey Mills. The new coach did not take credit for the success of the established program.

“They knew what they were doing already,” Mills said.

This was the third straight season that D’Hanis and San Isidro met in the third round of the playoffs. D’Hanis now has the 2-1 advantage, but San Isidro could square things up again next year. The Tigers have great numbers in their volleyball program, Mills said.

“They just keep signing up,” Mills said. “They all want to play volleyball. The school has 75 kids and there is 28 on the volleyball team. It is pretty impressive. That is not me, this program is already established.”

Mills thanked his team for the great season as well as the community and the school district for its support.

San Perlita also returned to the third round of the playoffs after making it to the third round the last two seasons in Class 1A. The Trojans’ season also came to an end at the expense of Tilden McMullen County Tuesday at Alice

The Cowboys swept the Trojans.

San Perlita defeated Pettus in four sets to claim the area championship and the opportunity to meet McMullen County in the third round Tuesday night.

Lyford, the District 32-3A champion, faced Corpus Christi London on Tuesday night. Corpus Christi London swept the Bulldogs 25-14, 25-16, 26-24 at Falfurrias High School.

The Bulldogs made it to third round after defeating Hebbronville in five sets to win the area championship.

The Sharyland High Rattlers and the McAllen Memorial Mustangs, both from Class 5A, are the last two volleyball teams remaining in the UIL playoffs.
