Cougars cruise past crosstown rival Bobcats

EDINBURG — The Edinburg North Cougars took down crosstown rival Edinburg High 75-40 on Tuesday at Edinburg North High School to remain locked into District 31-6A’s No. 2 seed.

The Cougars (22-9, 10-2) held a two-point lead after the opening eight minutes and proceeded to outscore the Bobcats 63-28 over the next three quarters. Edinburg North consistently turned defensive stops into buckets on the offensive end to grow its lead.

“We came out a little flat, but we talked to our kids about picking it up a little bit more on defense, and that’s what we pride ourselves on,” Edinburg North head coach Rudy Garcia said. “We picked it (defense) up, we forced them into bad decisions, throwing the ball away, and that’s the way we play with pressure.”

Guard Christian Faz scored 13 of his game-high 17 during the third quarter. Nony Rios and Jorge Santa Maria finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Edinburg North 6 foot 7 inch center Eddie Gonzalez nearly double-double with 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Edinburg High’s Ryan Rivera drained four 3-pointers to lead the Bobcats with 12 points.

Next for Edinburg North is a District 31-6A game against PSJA High at 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA High School in San Juan.

Edinburg High (16-15, 7-6) has an open date Friday before hosting PSJA High at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
