East Valley Softball: Lionettes living on edge entering area round

LA FERIA — The La Feria Lionettes needed two walkoff wins against Zapata to advance to the area round of the playoffs.

La Feria will take on Hondo in a best-of-three series in Robstown.

The Lionettes have a very young squad comprised mostly of sophomores. Only two juniors and one senior year are among the ranks headed for a 6 p.m. Game 1 on Friday to Robstown.

“We have worked hard all season,” junior Sabrina Azua said. “We know what we need to work on, we have been watching film, so we know what we need to do.”

In the circle for the Lionettes is sophomore BeAnka Galan.

“It is pretty awesome to be in the second round,” she said. “Last year we did not make it past the first round. We are progressing slowly. We can keep going, to be honest. We are doing really good and working together. I am pretty confident about how we are going to do. We can win.”

Santa Rosa, the District 32-3A champion, starts its series with Corpus Christi London at 6:30 p.m. today. All games will be held in Falfurrias.

Los Fresnos will take on Northside O’Connor at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Hebbronville in a single-game playoff that probably is the most intriguing matchup of the area round.

O’Connor destroyed Laredo United South by a combined score of 30-0 across two games. Los Fresnos shut out Mission High 10-0 in a single-elimination game.

The only team that gave O’Connor, the undefeated District 29-6A champion, competition this season was Northside Brennan. Harlingen South will take on Brennan in a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m. Friday at Cabaniss Softball Field in Corpus Christi. Brennan twice took O’Connor to extra innings during district play.

Harlingen South needed three games to get by La Joya High in bi-district.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial also needed three games to take care of McAllen Rowe. The Lady Chargers will face Rio Grande City beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA High.

Lyford will be ready to take on playoff rival Santa Gertrudis Academy. They begin their playoff series at 7 p.m. Friday at home.
