Falcons clinch playoff spot with win over Cardinals

LOS FRESNOS — The Los Fresnos Falcons booked their spot in the playoffs with a 2-0 victory against the Harlingen High Cardinals on Friday night.

“It is a great feeling,” Falcons coach Michael Miller said. “Coming into the season it was predicted that we would finish fifth in the district, so we knew that we had a fight on our hands. We knew it was a really tough district, and to get in the top four is awesome. We are excited for the playoffs.”

The Falcons hold a six-point advantage over the San Benito Greyhounds and have the tiebreaker advantage after winning both matches against the Greyhounds.

Los Fresnos was fired in front inside the first minute thanks to a goal from junior Kevin Zamora.

“We had some good passes, they found me on the overlap, and I just shot and made the goal,” he said.

Forward Ivan Galvan was next on the scoresheet. He took his time and calmly found the corner of the goal with his weaker foot midway through the first half.

“I think it was a good finish,” Galvan said. “I could not thank my teammates enough for giving me the opportunities to score.”

The junior, with 12 goals, already has surpassed his goal tally from last year.

“I am excited for the playoffs. I want to go far this year,” Galvan said. “Last year was hard for us, but this year I want to go deep and put my all into it.”

The Cardinals had their chances in the second half. During the 48th minute, a Harlingen High chance smacked the crossbar. Multiple crosses into the box flashed by the Los Fresnos keeper, begging to be tucked in.

Los Fresnos had a couple of opportunities to seal the match, but it did not matter because of the stout defending.

“Great start in the wind. We got the first two goals on them and surprised them,” Miller said. “Harlingen does not stop. They are well-coached, and they are going to play. We found a way to get three points. The way we did it has been the script all season.”
