SAN BENITO — The San Benito Lady Greyhounds defeated the Harlingen High Lady Cardinals 8-2 in a District 32-6A meeting Tuesday.

“We showed a lot of grit, a lot of heart, we started making routine plays, clutch hitting, and Emily Delgado pitched a great game,” San Benito coach Elias Martinez said. “It was a great performance all around.”

Delgado was superb on the mound against the Lady Cardinals. The junior pitcher had a no-hitter broken up with only one out remaining in the game.

She was sitting on 10 strikeouts when Lady Cards catcher Jaymie Gonzales ripped a double. Lady Cards first baseman Chloe Gracida then went yard for the only hits allowed by Delgado.

“I know we had to get this game,” Delgado said. “I knew my defense was behind me, and we were going to come and take it.”

Delgado was provided with run support early and often. The Lady Greyhounds utilized bunts, smart base running and were patient at the plate as they moved runners into scoring position often.

Five-hitter Alexa Vasquez took advantage and drove in a few runs on the day.

“I just stayed through the ball,” Vasquez said. “I was just trying to get runs in and not trying to hit up. I was just trying to help the team score runs.”

Harlingen High will look to bounce back against the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons.

“We have a tough game on Thursday,” Lady Cards coach Kevin Ledesma said. “We just need to refocus our mindset. The girls are not playing bad softball, just got to change the approach and work on some things.”
