East Valley Powerlifting: Class 5A girls add to medal haul

HARLINGEN — Brownsville girls powerlifters concluded the THSWPA state meet Saturday in Corpus Christi, competing in the Class 5A’s big school championships.

Brownsville Pace’s Kimberly Luna is a state champion in the 181-pound weight class after putting up a 1,055-pound total. Luna squatted 460, benched 210 and deadlifted 385.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s Nicole Cortez finished second to Luna. Cortez’s massive 465-pound squat was the highest in the weight class. Cortez benched 235 and deadlifted 325 for her 1,025 total.

Brownsville Veterans’ Ollie Valdez is coming home with a silver medal in the 114-pound weight class. She tied the highest deadlift at 285, benched 140 and squatted 315 for a 740.

Also, in the 114-pound weight class the Lady Chargers’ Mia Ibarra finished seventh at 695. She squatted 255, benched 155 and deadlifted 285.

Brownsville Pace’s Andrea Rizo is bringing back a bronze medal after an 880 in the 148-pound weight class, missing out on gold by 10 pounds. Her 380-pound squat tied for the highest in the weight class.

Brownsville Lopez’s Mia De Los Santos finished eighth in the 97-pound weight class after posting a 570. She benched 100, squatted 240 and deadlifted 230.

Lopez’s Destiny Torres came in seventh in the 105-pound weight class. Torres put up a 260 in the squat, a 160 in the bench that was tied for the highest in the weight class and a 250 in the deadlift for a 670.

In the over-259 weight class, Lopez’s Norma Gonzalez finished fourth at 840. She squatted 370, benched 195 and deadlifted 275.
