Greyhounds eye playoffs after win at Hanna

BROWNSVILLE — The San Benito Greyhounds woke up in the second quarter, pulling away from the Brownsville Hanna Eagles on Tuesday night in a District 32-6A meeting.

The Greyhounds outscored the Eagles 19-3 during that pivotal quarter to go up 29-9 at the end of the first half and eventually defeated Brownsville Hanna 53-23 at Hanna.

“We really needed this win,” Greyhounds head coach Abel Moreno said.”We are still trying to fight for position in our district, so this was a must-win tonight.”

Greyhounds sophomore Angie Reyes continued to shine, finishing with 21 points, and hit three 3-pointers during the second quarter.

“It has been a good season,” Reyes said. “We have had a couple of tough losses, but we are growing as a team.”

Junior Daisy Esquivel had a nice game for the Greyhounds in the paint, dropping nine points. Fellow junior Yazmin Bernabe chipped in with eight points.

Brownsville Hanna’s Sofia Roman and Alondra Robles led the Eagles in scoring with seven points each.

This was the first game of the second round of District 32-6A. The Eagles needed the win after going winless during the first round of district. Brownsville Hanna put up a fight against San Benito at times.

The Eagles (11-21, 0-6) played some good basketball during the previous five games but could not come up with a win. Against Los Fresnos, Hanna only lost 46-43, and against Brownsville Rivera the score was 43-27.

The Eagles needed one of those games to compete in the second round of district to likely compete for a playoff spot, and came out strong on defense looking to make up ground in the standings.

But this Greyhounds team is pretty good this year.

The Greyhounds (22-10, 4-2) still have some growing to do. San Benito was not able to knock off Weslaco High or Harlingen High from the top spots in the first round.

“We are trying to work our way there,” Moreno said. “We feel like if we can fix a couple of things, we can be in those games. We lost a quarter or two, we just have to be more disciplined throughout the game. We are working on making that happen.”

They’re not there yet, but the Greyhounds are destined for the playoffs. The win moves San Benito to 4-2 in district, sitting in third place. Los Fresnos (3-3) defeated Brownsville Rivera (1-5) on Tuesday night, opening the door for the Greyhounds to clinch a playoff spot with a win against the Raiders.

Brownsville Hanna travels to Harlingen High to take on the Cardinals at 6 p.m. Friday. The Greyhounds head to Brownsville to face the Rivera Raiders at 6 p.m. Friday.
