Several RGV standouts named to Blue Bell/TSWA All-State Football Teams

The Rio Grande Valley landed several high school football standouts on this year’s Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A and 5A All-State Football Teams released Wednesday and Thursday. The Blue Bell/TSWA Class 6A All-State Team will be announced Friday.

CLASS 5A ALL-STATE

Roma senior punter Alejandro Gomez and Mercedes senior athlete Tyrell Treviño led the way with all-state first team honors.

Roma’s Gomez averaged 47.4 yards per punt on 23 punts. He was also named third team place kicker after going 6-for-8 with a long field goal of 44 yards and 25 touchbacks.

Mercedes’ Treviño recorded 1,485 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns, 41 receptions for 516 yards and four scores and added 34 passing yards.

Roma junior fullback Isaac Lozano (2,012 rushing yards, 29 touchdowns) was voted to the all-state second team.

PSJA North placed three players on the all-state third team — junior offensive tackle Dante Garcia (141 pancakes), junior linebacker Steven Garza (165 tackles, four sacks) and junior fullback Jason Montes (1,711 rushing, 14 touchdowns). Brownsville Veterans junior defensive back Gilbert Trillo (137 tackles, five interceptions) also earned all-state third team honors.

All-State honorable mentions include McAllen High junior kick returner and utility player Max Alvarez (349 rushing, 564 receiving, 10 total touchdowns, 60 tackles, two kick return touchdowns), Brownsville Veterans senior running back Bryan Chavez (1,721 rushing, 35 touchdowns), Brownsville Veterans senior defensive lineman Christian De La Garza (61 tackles, 7.5 sacks), Edinburg Vela senior defensive lineman Jake Dufner (47.5 tackles, 6.5 sacks), Roma senior defensive back David Galan (35 tackles, seven interceptions), PSJA North junior defensive lineman Danny Garcia (129 tackles, 5.5 sacks), Brownsville Veterans junior utility player Gerry Gomez (784 receiving, 172 rushing, 44 tackles, nine touchdowns), PSJA North junior linebacker Mikey Gonzales (148 tackles, nine sacks), Edinburg Vela senior all-purpose player Justin Navarro (739 receiving, 165 rushing, 17 total touchdowns) and Brownsville Veterans junior guard Matthew Pinion.

CLASS 4A ALL-STATE

Hidalgo junior defensive back Anthony Nava (40 tackles, five interceptions) was named an all-state honorable mention, as was fellow teammate Damian Carbajal (325 receiving, six touchdowns, 82 tackles, five sacks), who was recognized as both a tight end and linebacker.

Raymondville senior linebacker Hunter Posas (129 tackles, 3.5 sacks) also earned an all-state honorable mention.
