Toros pick up first win; remain unbeaten

Rio Grande Valley FC needed to go on the road to pick up its first USL Championship win this season.

Taylor Davila’s 23rd minute goal gives the Toros the three points after starting off the season with three straight 1-1 draws at H-E-B Park in Edinburg.

RGV FC (1-3-0, 6pts) needed goalkeeper Tyler Deric to make huge saves down the stretch, or a fourth straight 1-1 draw would have been the likely result. Detroit City created a few scrambles in the RGV FC box, but Deric and the defense kept the home team out of the back of the net.

Davila did most of the work for the Toros’ only goal. Davila took the ball off a Detroit City player in the midfield and with the help of teammates making runs to keep the defense from not stepping up, he easily tucked in his shot low and into the corner to give the Toros the lead.

Wilmer Cabrera’s side will now shift their focus to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Toros are in action at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday against the South Georgia Tormenta FC from USL League 1.
