McHi knocks off Weslaco with buzzer-beater

WESLACO — McAllen High senior guard Jordon Chappell knocked down a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Bulldogs over Weslaco High 55-52 on Tuesday at Weslaco High School.

The Bulldogs (9-5, 0-0) avenged a 65-52 loss against the Panthers on Nov. 20. The loss moves Weslaco to 10-6 overall.

“You call that perseverance, you call that intensity, whatever you want to call it. They stayed in the game, they stayed focused,” McHi head coach Ryan Flores said. “We made some mistakes early, but I think in that second half, the way they came out in the third quarter, they wanted that game.”

Robert Canul drained a mid-range jumper from the left baseline to tie the game at 52-52 with 30 seconds remaining. McHi forced Weslaco into a contested shot in the paint, came away with the rebound and found Chappell running down court for the game-winner.

Danny Canul led the Bulldogs with 14 points, while Robert Canul added 12 and Jaylon Chappell chipped in 10. Weslaco’s Andrew Olmeda scored a game-high 19 points with Leonard Smith also posting double figures with 10.

Next for Weslaco High is another non-district test against Laredo United South (5-7) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Laredo.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are set to host the McHi Tournament from Thursday through Saturday at McAllen High School. The Bulldogs are scheduled to face Edinburg Economedes (6-6) at 8 a.m. Thursday, followed by a matchup against Laredo Alexander (3-6) at 6 p.m.
