East Valley Basketball: District play underway

By EDWARD SEVERN, Staff Writer

The majority of East Valley girls basketball teams began district play Tuesday and will continue with district play today before they break for Christmas next week.

District 32-6A opened with a bang Tuesday. Harlingen South took down a good Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles team 40-35. San Benito picked up a big win on the road against Los Fresnos 51-43, and the Harlingen Lady Cardinals took care of the Brownsville Rivera Lady Raiders on the road as well.

Today, the Lady Cards and the Lady Hawks will take their city rivalry to the court as they both look to stay unbeaten in the district. Both teams had good wins in non-district and tournaments to get them ready for district play.

The Lady Greyhounds will hope to keep the momentum of a good first win on the road again at Hanna. Los Fresnos will look to bounce back against Donna North at home.

Weslaco High beat Donna North 89-6 on Tuesday and will be a tough matchup for East Valley teams in District 32-6A during the season.

In 32-5A, Brownsville Veterans Memorial got off to a good start, beating Brownsville Porter 64-11. Brownsville Lopez fell to Donna High 50-34 and Brownsville Pace lost a close one to Mercedes 44-38.

Today, Brownsville Veterans will travel to Lopez and Pace will play host to Donna High.

District 32-4A has not started their district games yet, but many teams will be in action today, hosting games. Rio Hondo will host Santa Rosa. Port Isabel welcomes Harvest Christian, and Benavides travels to Raymondville.

The Lyford Lady Bulldogs are holding down 31-3A for the East Valley in a unique district featuring IDEA schools. The Lady Bulldogs are undefeated in district (8-0). They take on North Mission IDEA in a district game Monday.

District 32-3A, featuring Brownsville Jubilee, Brownsville IDEA Frontier, Brownsville IDEA Riverview, Santa Rosa and Brownsville Harmony School of Innovation begin district after the new year.

Brownsville St. Joseph and TAPPS also will begin in January.
