East Valley Girls Basketball: Holiday break arrives for teams

By EDWARD SEVERN, Staff Writer

East Valley girls basketball teams began their holiday break Wednesday, interrupting the beginning of district campaigns for most and for some a timely break.

The highly contentious District 32-6A was in action Friday. The defending district champion Harlingen High Lady Cardinals got up early on city rivals Harlingen South, but the Lady Hawks fought back well. A late surge allowed the Lady Cards to come out victorious 43-33 and earn a 2-0 start to district.

South bounced back against Mission Veterans Memorial on Tuesday, winning 42-35 in a non-district game.

Six wins got Los Fresnos into the playoffs last season, and the Lady Falcons bounced back from a defeat to San Benito in their opening district game with a lopsided win against Donna North.

A youthful San Benito Lady Greyhounds team has now started district 2-0, matching their 32-6A win total from last season. The Lady Greyhounds defeated the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles 25-18. The two big wins are huge for playoff positioning.

District play resumes on New Year’s Eve, with Harlingen South traveling to San Benito and Harlingen High playing host to Weslaco High. They are two games that are likely to be good ones with top four implications.

Hanna won a non-district game against Brownsville Porter on Monday to keep warm. The Lady Eagles are at Donna North and Los Fresnos will head to Brownsville to face Rivera on New Year’s Eve, too.

The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers are off to a host start in District 32-5A with two big wins against other Brownsville schools. Brownsville Veterans will go to Weslaco East for a New Year’s Eve game. Brownsville Pace or Brownsville Lopez will get their first district win when they play the same day.

Class 4A schools will begin district in January. Rio Hondo and Raymondville picked up wins Tuesday at home. Raymondville handled Roma and Rio Hondo punched above its district level by beating Weslaco East.
