Upper-Valley Football Roundup: Bears win big against Javelinas

The PSJA High Bears bounced back from a two-point loss in their season opener in a big way by defeating crosstown rival PSJA Southwest 34-3 in a non-district contest at PSJA Stadium in Pharr. The Bears scored 21 first half points and never looked back.

“Our defense played well for the second week in a row. They kept us in the ball game and had a lot of three-and-outs and it allowed our offense to go to work early,” PSJA High head coach Lupe Rodriguez said.

Senior linebacker Oscar Tolentino got in on the scoring-fun by returning a fumble for six to push the Bears further ahead.

PSJA High moves onto its bye week before opening District 31-6A play on Sept. 17 on the road against La Joya Juarez-Lincoln.

“We have a lot of athletes that were dinged up so we’re going to heal a bit, take a step back and re-emphasize the basics and hopefully freshen up for our district run,” Rodriguez said.
