BROWNSVILLE — Edcouch-Elsa traveled Saturday to Brownsville for a District 32-5A match against Brownsville Pace, and Lady ’Jackets beat the Lady Vikings in four sets, 25-19, 25-23, 24-25, 25-17.

It was the second time the teams have faced each other in district this season. Last month, Pace won a four-set match, but Edcouch-Elsa came out victorious this time around.

“We realize that it was between us, Pace and Donna (High) in the team standings,” Edcouch-Elsa coach Gloria Treviño said. “So, in order to put ourselves in a higher standing, we realize that we needed to beat Pace.”

Pace fought hard but Edcouch-Elsa won the first two sets. Pace squeezed in a narrow victory during the third set, but lost the final one.

“It was a tough loss, but I mean, I don’t feel that we showed up to play today,” Pace coach Daya Venegas said. “I told the girls Edcouch-Elsa has a good defense, and everyone is going to show up in the second round to get that spot in the playoffs.”
