PSJA High sweeps Edinburg Vela to remain in first

EDINBURG — The PSJA High Bears held on to the top spot in the District 31-6A standings with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 takedown of Edinburg Vela on Tuesday night at Edinburg Vela High School.
PSJA (22-11, 11-1) also swept the season series against the SaberCats after beating Edinburg Vela in three sets Sept. 11.
“We’ve talked a lot about energy, and if we could pick up our energy and be aggressive, we can control our own game. The girls understood that coming into this game, they saw it a lot in practice and they were able to see it again today,” PSJA High head coach Caroline Cuellar said.
PSJA High Johanna Montelongo came up big in key moments for the Bears to lead them to come-from-behind victories in sets one and two.
PSJA held off the SaberCats during the third set as Montelongo put a stamp on the sweep with an emphatic kill for match point.
The Bears control their own destiny in the district title race.
“We know we have four games left, and we talk about you can’t let your guard down at any moment,” Cuellar said.
Next for PSJA High is a showdown against rival PSJA North at noon Saturday at PSJA High School.
Meanwhile, the SaberCats will hit the road for a matchup against La Joya Juarez-Lincoln at noon Saturday at La Joya Juarez-Lincoln High School.
