RGV’s top hoopers shine in All-Valley Showcase at Bert Ogden Arena

EDINBURG — The brightest high school basketball stars across the Rio Grande Valley converged at Bert Ogden Arena to take part in the 2021 All-Valley Showcase Saturday night, pitting the East Valley all-star boys and girls teams against West Valley squads.

The girls kicked things off as the All-Valley West Team overcame a slow first quarter on their way to a 73-63 victory over the All-Valley East Team.

Sharyland Pioneer’s duo of Audry Hornaday and Jordan Bravo sparked the All-Valley West girls team on both ends of the floor. Hornaday finished with a game-high 14 points, while Bravo added nine.

Weslaco High’s Morgan Peralez and Harlingen High’s Callie Cervantes led the All-Valley East girls team with 13 and 11 points apiece, respectively. Peralez and Cervantes nearly engineered a fourth quarter comeback by trimming the lead to five with two minutes to play, but the West All-Valley girls team held on to the win.

The All-Valley boys teams closed the show with the West pulling off a dominant 111-100 win over the East.

Seven different players scored in double figures for the West team led by McAllen Rowe sophomore point guard Darren Manriquez’s 16 points. Mission Veterans senior post Jacob Arenas, Sharyland Pioneer forward Miguel Angel Gonzalez and PSJA North senior guard Elijah De La Garza each added 12 for the West team.

On the other side, the East had five finish with double digits as Los Fresnos sophomore guard Gerry Martinez scored a game-high 19 points while pulling down six rebounds. Weslaco High’s Leonard Smith poured in 16, while his Panthers’ teammate Vince Peralez posted an 11-point, 110-rebound double-double.
