Lady Chargers’ Nieto signs with Concordia

Anisa Nieto has displayed a love of golf throughout her time at Brownsville Veterans Memorial. That relationship now will continue in college.

Nieto signed a college scholarship agreement Friday to play her sport at Concordia University in Austin. The Tornados play in NCAA Division III and are members of American Southwest Conference.

“It feels amazing to get the opportunity to continue my golf career in college,” said Nieto, who played on a state-qualifying team as a sophomore and on a regional-qualifying team as a junior.

She was a member of two past District 32-5A championship teams, and the Lady Chargers’ goal for Nieto’s senior season is to at least make it to the Region IV-5A Tournament again this spring.

She ranks in the top five in the Rio Grande Valley with a 79.4 average for 18 holes.

“It’s meant a lot (to play for the Lady Chargers),” said Nieto, who plans to study nursing in college. “It’s taught me the game of golf and morals.”

Lady Chargers coach Thomas Abete said he appreciates Nieto’s contributions to the team.

“Anisa has been a huge part of our program since she started with us (as a sophomore),” he said. “Anisa is a hard worker. It was going to take a lot to achieve the goal of playing goal in college, and she did it.”

Nieto said she thanks her parents and all her coaches, “especially the Lucios at First Tee.”
