McHi’s Aaron Nixon named to All-USA High School Baseball Team

McAllen High senior pitcher and infielder Aaron Nixon was named to the 2018-2019 All-USA High School Baseball third team earlier this week for his play during his junior season.

The teams were selected by the USA Today high school sports staff based on performance, level of competition and strength of schedule.

Nixon was one of only six Texas players selected to the All-USA teams as he led the Bulldogs to a 25-10-1 record, while batting .492 with 61 hits, 43 runs and 18 RBIs, and went 7-2 on the mound with a 1.08 ERA and 137 strikeouts in 71 innings.

The University of Texas commit is at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he is participating in Major League Baseball’s first ever Prospect Development Pipeline League featuring 80 of the top high school seniors from across the United States and Puerto Rico who are eligible for the 2020 MLB Draft.

Former MLB superstars Ryan Howard, Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones and Barry Larkin are serving as team captains for the PDP league. Nixon, who is playing for Team Jeter, has seen time at second base and on the mound during PDP games, which began June 20.

The PDP league will run through July 4 and includes fielding and hitting development training from a rotating carousel of coaches, including Hall of Fame members Jones, Larkin and Jeter, former All-Stars like Howard, Andy Pettitte and Lance Berkman, and 21-year MLB veteran LaTroy Hawkins. Scouts from all 30 major league teams will be in attendance throughout the season.

At the conclusion of the three-week league, the top 40 players will be selected to play in the High School All-Star game July 6 at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
