Local teams hitting their strides before district play

The Santa Rosa Warriors kicked off the New Year with a 64-54 win over Lyford Wednesday afternoon. The win keeps the Warriors in first place with a 5-0 league record, while Lyford suffers their first district loss and is now 5-1.

Adam Cavazos netted a team-high 15 points and Mike Bermea finished with 10 in the win. The Warriors overcame a sluggish second half and held on for the win. Up next for Santa Rosa is a road trip at Brownsville Frontier on Friday.

Lyford will have another tough test Friday at San Perlita. For the Bulldogs, Ruben Gonzales scored a game-high 16 points, Ruben Torres scored 11 and JJ Romo added 10.

Rio Hondo, meanwhile, is coming off a 1-1 effort at the Kingsville Brahma Holiday Classic this past weekend.

The Bobcats fell to Gregory-Portland 51-42 and earned a 51-48 win over Santa Gertrudis Academy. Up next, the ’Cats will continue their district season at home against Raymondville.

District 32-6A play on the horizon and Harlingen High is heading in the right direction after winning four straight. The Cardinals are coming off a 63-58 win against Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial on Tuesday.

Up next for the Red Birds is a road game at Corpus Christi Miller Friday at 3:30.

The Miller game will serve as one final tune up before Harlingen High opens district play Jan. 11 at home against Los Fresnos.

Harlingen South is also another team finding their mojo before district after going 3-1 at the Bay City Classic.

The Hawks picked up a 69-43 win over Ganado, followed by a 78-45 win over Boling and a 51-42 loss to Bay City. South finished with a 78-45 against Palacios to wrap up a solid tournament showing.

The Hawks will now have time to rest up before they open up district play Jan. 11 at Brownsville Rivera.

“The little break we are getting before our first district game is coming at a really good time,” said Hawks coach Brian Molina. “It gives us a chance to get some practice time in and prepare for a tough district schedule.”

The San Benito Greyhounds will also be gearing up for their district opener on Jan. 11 when they host Brownsville Hanna.
