Volleyball roundup for Aug. 6, 2019

LAREDO ALEXANDER 3, McALLEN HIGH 2: At Laredo, Lexi Gonzalez tallied 24 kills and Celina Saenz added 17 kills but it wasn’t quite enough as Laredo Alexander defeated McAllen High 25-14, 22-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-11 on Tuesday in Laredo.

McHi falls to 0-1 on the season.

Madi Helmcamp had seven kills, 21 assists and three aces. She added 11 digs. Gonzalez, the All-Valley Class 6A Girls Athlete of the Year last year, also led the team with 16 digs. Saenz, a sophomore, also had three assists, a pair of aces and 12 digs. Sabrina Garza and Audrey Zamora had 13 digs each and Haidee Moore had a team-high two blocks.

McHi returns to action Thursday, hosting the three-day, 24-team Poundfest Tournament.

SAN ISIDRO 3, IDEA DONNA 0: At Donna, San Isidro defeated IDEA Donna 25-11, 25-21, 25-16 to win its first game of the young season in a convincing sweep Tuesday evening in Donna.

San Isidro got off to a roaring start, seizing the first five service points of the first set. The Tigers also tallied six service aces against IDEA Donna in the opening set. From there, San Isidro would emphatically slam the door shut after jumping out to a quick 10-3 lead in the second set and roaring back from an early deficit in the final, decisive third set.

“Today was excellent,” San Isidro head coach Elva Smith said of her team’s performance. “Our girls are fired up and we’re going to be flying under the radar. … Our motto is that we respect all and fear none.”

San Isidro returns to the court to host St. Joseph Brownsville on Aug. 13.

BROWNSVILLE VETERANS 3, PSJA MEMORIAL 0: At Brownsville, Brownsville Veterans topped PSJA Memorial 25-11, 25-21, 25-22 for a clean three set sweep in each team’s regular season debut.

PSJA Memorial will return to action when it squares off against Laredo Cigarroa, McAllen Memorial and La Feria on Thursday at the Poundfest Tournament at McAllen Memorial. Meanwhile, Brownsville Veterans will also participate in the Poundfest Tournament, taking on Edinburg Vela, PSJA North and the McAllen High junior varsity squad Thursday at McAllen Rowe. The Poundfest Tournament will begin with pool play Thursday and Friday before concluding with the championship bracket Saturday afternoon.
