PHARR — Daunte Galvan spent much of his last four years knocking down shots from well behind the 3-point line, but on Thursday, the recent PSJA North graduate signed his name right on a different kind of line.
Surrounded by family, friends and coaches, Galvan signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Arkansas State University Mid-South at PSJA North High School.
“I feel blessed and grateful for all the opportunities God has given me,” Galvan said after inking his name.
Galvan, a four-year letterman, leaves PSJA North as PSJA Independent School District’s all-time leading scorer with 2,679 points. He averaged 10.9 points per game as a freshman, 14.2 as a sophomore, 28.6 as a junior, and 26.8 during his senior season.
“I wasn’t planning on doing it or anything like that, it kind of just happened. I was always just out there trying to win games,” he said.
Galvan was also named the District 31-6A Most Valuable Player during his junior year and District 30-6A’s Most Valuable Player during his senior season. As a junior, Galvan led the nation in 3-point attempts and 3-pointers made.
And even with his name in the PSJA ISD athletics record books, one of the main things he’ll remember about his time at PSJA North was his head coach, Jaime Gongora, yelling at him, Galvan joked.
“Daunte has got a great future ahead of him. We’re really excited about the opportunities to come,” Gongora said.
Right beside Galvan on signing day was his father, Miguel Galvan, who played at PSJA North during the late 1990s. Daunte followed his father’s footsteps and wore the same No. 10 jersey, and now, he’s built his own legacy for the black and silver with a long list of accomplishments.
“I couldn’t have done it without my dad. Since I was young, he’s been pushing me and helping me on this journey of mine to help me get where I am today,” Daunte said. “Knowing my dad wore that number, and I did too with all the accomplishments, it’s a good feeling.”
Galvan is preparing to leave for school Sunday and expects to immediately get to work with his new team. Arkansas State Mid-South is part of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
What does he feel he adds to the program?
“Energy and a positive attitude,” he said. “With that, you can do anything in life.”
