The opening week of high school football in Texas delivered shootouts, upsets and blowouts, but the kings remained kings.

Edinburg Vela (1-0) holds firm atop the RGVSports.com Top 10 rankings for the second consecutive week as the SaberCats went on the road and pulled out a 51-46 victory over Laredo United in Week 1. Vela received each first-place vote from the eight voters.

Last week’s No. 4 McAllen Memorial (1-0) and No. 6 Brownsville Hanna (0-1) went head-to-head with the Mustangs coming away with a 42-40 win at home. The win moves the Memorial Mustangs up a couple spots at No. 2, and they’ll have a second straight Top 10 matchup against No. 8 Sharyland High, as the still No. 6 Hanna Eagles as they take on No. 1 Edinburg Vela.

The Greyhounds of San Benito move down one spot after a 28-20 loss against Calallen, last week’s No. 3-ranked team in 5A Division II by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

Coming off a big 37-0 win over rival Mission Veterans in The Battle of Conway, Mission High has jumped up four spots to No. 4. Next for the Eagles is a game against a Donna North team that lost 21-3 to Donna High last week.

After not being ranked a week ago, Weslaco East (1-0) makes its way into the Top 10 after a 32-29 overtime win over the Manor Mustangs in Corpus Christi. The No. 5 Wildcats proved they can play with the big dogs and belong among the best in the RGV.

Harlingen High (1-0) ups its rank by one after a 42-41 win over Sharyland Pioneer. A failed two-point conversion during the final minutes cost Sharyland Pioneer, securing the win for the Cardinals.

The Sharyland High Rattlers (1-0) paid a visit to familiar foe Brownsville Pace and controlled the game for a 27-13 win. The No. 8 Rattlers will now face No. 2 McAllen Memorial in Week 2.

Rounding out the RGV Sports Top 10 rankings after Week 1 is Weslaco High (0-1) and PSJA North (1-0) who tied at ninth with 15 votes. The Raiders were dominant in a 44-8 win over PSJA Memorial, while the Panthers lost a shootout to McAllen Rowe 44-41.
