VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: McHi, Edcouch advance to second round

ROMA — Senior Lexi Gonzalez slammed home 21 kills and sophomore Celina Saenz added12 kills as McAllen High swept Laredo United South on Tuesday at Roma High School in the bi-district round of the Class 6A playoffs.

McHi, now 43-2 overall, claimed a 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 win in a match that took just over an hour.

The Panthers, the fourth seed out of District 29-6A, stayed close in the very early parts of each set before the Bulldogs, the top seed out of District 30-6A started steamrolling behind Gonzalez and Saenz. Andrea Tovar added three kills, libero Audrey Zamora had 13 digs and setter Madie Helmcamp added 15 assists.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 18 in the state according the Texas Girls Coaches Association, will play the winner of today’s Edinburg North vs. Harlingen matchup in the second round, date and time to be announced.

EDCOUCH WINS IN FIVE SETS

ELAS — Edcouch-Elsa defeated Sharyland High 25-15, 25-22, 25-27, 23-25, 16-14 to advance to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

The Yellow Jackets overcame a match point in the fifth set, down 14-13, before winning the final three sets.

Edcouch-Elsa, ranked No. 12 in the state in Class 5A, improved to 36-7 and will play No. 4 ranked Gregory Portland at 7 p.m. Thursday in Alice. Gregory Portland is 42-4.

Veronica Elizondo led E-E with 15 kills, 19 digs and two aces. Meagan Acevedo added 14 kills, 23 assists and 11 digs and Endiya Devoe contributed 10 kills and two blocks. Bry De La Pena had five blocks.
