The boys Texas High School Powerlifting Association state championship in Divisions 2 and 3 wrapped up Saturday in Abilene, including several participants from the Rio Grande Valley.

Division 1 results were not provided by the THSPA as of press time Sunday.

In Division 2, Raymondville’s Marcus Capetillo took home the state title in the 132-pound weight division in all three events. Capetillo squatted 500 pounds, bench pressed 270 pounds, and deadlifted 435 pounds for a cumulative total of 1,205 pounds. The senior also finished first in 132 at last year’s state championship.

Raymondville finished seventh in the final team standings, and Port Isabel finished 22nd.

Port Isabel’s Jayden Lopez placed fourth in the 114-pound weight division. His 370 mark in the squat was second only to Gilmer’s Jose Sanchez, the overall champion in 114. Lopez also reached 175 pounds in the bench press and 365 in the deadlift, for a combined 910 pounds.

Port Isabel’s David Hernandez finished fourth in the 123-pound weight division. Hernandez posted a 400-pound lift in the squat and a 190-pound bench press. His deadlift of 420 pounds matched the mark of the winner at 123, Bryan Quinteros Jr. of Lamesa, who squatted 405 pounds and recorded a bench press of 225 pounds.

Rio Hondo’s Isaac Rodriguez competed in the 148-pound weight division and placed eighth. He recorded a lift of 460 pounds in the squat, 280 pounds in the bench press and 465 pounds in the deadlift, aggregating 1,205 pounds.

The Bobcats also sent Justin Flores to state in the 220-pound weight division. Flores posted a 620-pound lift in the squat, and his 420-pound bench press was second-best in his class behind Gainesville’s Yovanni Juarez.

Flores’ 1,550 pound sum was equal to Hidalgo’s Dylan Earhart, but Earhart’s 640-pound squat and 560-pound deadlift were enough to give him the edge in the tiebreaker for sixth place, bumping Flores to seventh.

In Division 3, Edinburg IDEA’s Joey Rodriguez won the 114-pound weight division, accumulating 1,070 pounds. Rodriguez posted the top marks in the bench press at 240 pounds and the deadlift at 395 pounds. He was only bested in the squat by Sadler S&S Consolidated’s Austin Mullennix, who registered 445 pounds to Rodriguez’s 435 pounds.

Edinburg IDEA was second in the team standings behind champion San Diego.

Andrew Nevarez earned a second-place finish for Edinburg IDEA in the 165-pound weight division. Nevarez squatted 615 pounds and bench pressed 325 pounds. Nevarez’s deadlift of 505 pounds equaled that of the 165-pound champion, San Diego’s Lee Bazan. Nevarez totaled 1,445 pounds to Bazan’s 1,510 pounds.

Edinburg IDEA Quest’s Elijah Wheeler lifted a cumulative total of 1,110 pounds, which was good for a seventh-place finish in the 132-pound weight division. Wheeler lifted 440 pounds in the squat, 245 pounds in the bench press and 425 pounds in the deadlift.
