The Rivera Lady Raiders’ track & field team feels like it hasn’t gotten off to the best start in 2019, but it feels like it is slowly making progress.
In fact, it might be peaking at the right time.
The Lady Raiders put together their best outing of the season and captured the Brownsville City Meet girls championship, topping the standings with 137 points Friday at Sams Memorial Stadium.
Rivera coach Jennifer Schuster was pleased to see her squad rack up medals after a couple of down years at the city championship.
“ This group has come so far from last year to this year,” the longtime Rivera coach said. “Last year at the varsity level we didn’t perform very well, and that’s because we have a history of doing well at the city championship. We came in and had nine athletes scoring points, and all nine gave me 100 percent.”
Leading the way for the Lady Raiders was distance runner Andrea de la Rosa, who took gold in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 23.63 seconds and the 1,600 with a time of 5:21.95. De la Rosa also won the 3,200 on Thursday.
Other Rivera gold medal winners included the 1,600-meter relay team (4:17.62) and long jumper Ashley Hinojosa, who won her event with a distance of 16 feet, 3 inches.
The Brownsville Veterans Memorial girls finished second with 133 points, followed by Hanna (119), Pace (81), Porter (50), St. Joseph Academy (50) and Lopez (15).
Winning the boys title was Brownsville Veterans Memorial with 145 points, followed by Hanna (123), Pace (106), Rivera (88), Lopez (58), Porter (55) and St. Joseph Academy (42).
Chargers track Michael Moore pointed out that his subvarsity squads also had good outings, but his varsity set the tone with medals scattered throughout the meet.
“ Our varsity division really stands out because those guys are tough on the younger guys,” he said. “The expectation is there that we win and we keep winning. It’s good, and it was really nice to see them compete and get after it. We had medals all over the place today.”
In the field events, Michael Garza took gold in the long jump with a distance of 21-4, and Eric Sosa cleared 10 feet to win the pole vault.
On the track, Mauricio Garza won the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.73 and the Chargers’ 800 relay team claimed victory in 1 minute, 30.63 seconds.
The Chargers nearly won the mile relay, but Rivera’s Julian Tavares narrowly edged Garza on the final leg after gaining on him down the last 100 meters, giving the Raiders the win with a time of 3:32.42. Brownsville Veterans clocked in at 3:32.68.
OTHER NOTABLES
The Lady Chargers were edged out by four points but still had a big team day.
Valeria Ruiz won both the 100-meter hurdles (17.84) and the 300-meter hurdles (50.33).
Carolina Davila won the 100 (13.02); Alexa Chavez won the 200 (27.04) and the Lady Chargers claimed victory in the 400 and 800 relays.
In the girls throwing events, Pace’s Esmerelda Ruiz won the discus (117-06) and the shot put (35-1).
In the boys sprints, Porter’s Matthew Sandoval won the 100 and 200, finishing with times of 11.14 and 23.10, respectively.
SHORTHANDED
The Hanna girls came in third in the standings, but they were shorthanded as star sprinter Jacqueline Mora — who had been dominant up until this week in the 100, 200 and sprint relays — sat with a hamstring injury.
Her teammates picked up the slack, however, starting with Natalie Arnold, who leapt her way to victory in the high jump, clearing 5 feet.
Aniel Aguero also brought home gold, winning the 400 with a time of 1:03.15.
The Lady Golden Eagles also earned second-place finishes in the 400 and 1,600 relays.
