PSJA Memorial coach Michael Uribe will no longer lead the Wolverine football program or serve as the school’s athletic coordinator.

Uribe learned of the district’s decision on Tuesday.

“I respect the process,” Uribe said. “I know the athletic program that we’ve had here made some strides. There have been a lot of positive changes, but I do understand when leadership wants to go in a different direction.”

Under Uribe, the football program posted losing seasons in each of its four years, but the Wolverines ended the 2018 season by winning four of its final five games. The four victories this season were the best of Uribe’s tenure.

Uribe made a series of hires to inject new life into PSJA Memorial’s boys and girls basketball programs. He hired Eric Steinbrunner to lead the boys and Marissa Gutierrez to anchor the girls program. During the 2016-17 school year, both Wolverine basketball teams made the playoffs for the first time in school history.

Among Uribe’s other hires, he selected Angie Gonzales to coach volleyball. The Wolverines won the program’s first-ever district championship in 2017.

Uribe was last a head coach at Mercedes when he led the Tigers to a 32-24 record between 2009 and 2013. Uribe’s final record at PSJA Memorial is 9-30.
