Weslaco schools punctuate spots in heart of RGVSports top 10 poll

STAFF REPORT

Weslaco High was left with a bad taste in its mouth after suffering its first loss of the season to No. 1 Edinburg Vela in Week 7. The SaberCats held the Panthers to a first quarter touchdown and nothing more. The Panthers’ performance casted some doubt as to whether their high-powered offense was as powerful as previously thought.

The No. 6-ranked Panthers put those doubts to bed in a 75-3 win at Donna North last week thanks to 655 yards of offense and six players accounting for nine touchdowns.

Directly behind the Panthers is Weslaco East, who moved up three places from the No. 10 spot last week to No. 7. The Wildcats shut out Edinburg North 54-0 behind 380 rushing yards and six touchdowns by five different runners. Weslaco East’s defense is playing in another gear. They have allowed 33 points in six games this season.

The eight voters are the writers and editors who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers: The Monitor, The Valley Morning Star, and The Brownsville Herald.

Brownsville Hanna held onto its No. 2 spot this week. The Golden Eagles faced a two-touchdown deficit to Harlingen High, but their offense was able to orchestrate a comeback. The District 32-6A title could hang in the balance when Brownsville Hanna meets No. 5 San Benito on Friday. Both teams are 2-0 in district play.

Mission Veterans fell a point shy of a tie with Brownsville Hanna, but settle for third in this week’s poll. The Patriots will have their own district defining matchup when they travel to Sams Memorial Stadium to face No. 10 Brownsville Pace on Saturday night. Mission Veterans and Brownsville Pace are the only 6-0 teams in District 16-5A Division I. The Vikings are in the top 10 for the first time this season.

No. 4 PSJA High and No. 8 Brownsville Veterans remained in the same position as last week’s poll after taking care of business in Week 8. La Joya High reenters the poll at No. 9. The Coyotes are on the road against the PSJA North Raiders this week. The winner of Friday’s game will have sole possession of second place in District 30-6A.

The following are the teams in the RGVSports.com top 10 poll, with first-place votes in parentheses and total points based on 10 points for a first-place vote through 1 point for a 10th-place vote. The eight voters are the writers and editors who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers: The Monitor, Valley Morning Star, and Brownsville Herald.
