During the preseason, five different teams received first-place votes in the RGVSports.com top 10 poll. Just two weeks later, the poll voters were unanimous for the first time this year in selecting Edinburg Vela as the No. 1 team.

Vela swept the first-place votes to remain atop the rankings after knocking off then-No. 2 Brownsville Hanna 35-20 on Friday.

The nine voters are the writers and editors who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers: The Monitor, Valley Morning Star, and Brownsville Herald.

Hanna didn’t fall far as a result of the loss to Vela, settling in at No. 3. The Golden Eagles were leapfrogged by San Benito, which earned a 43-41 win against Victoria West during Week 2.

Harlingen High also knocked off a non-Valley opponent, beating Laredo United South 17-9 on Saturday to move up from No. 6 to No. 4.

Los Fresnos slid up one spot from No. 6 to a tie for No. 5, scoring 29 unanswered points in less than 18 minutes of game time to secure a 36-35 come-from-behind win against Austin LBJ.

Mission Veterans earned the same number of voter points as last week but slid from No. 4 to a tie for No. 5 following a 41-10 win against PSJA Memorial.

Brownsville Veterans also dropped in the rankings despite a victory, moving from No. 5 to No. 7 after beating Brownsville Lopez 32-12.

McAllen Memorial needed overtime to topple Sharyland High 27-21 and moved from No. 6 in the rankings to No. 8.

PSJA High moved up from No. 10 to No. 9 after a 55-45 win against Corpus Christi King, and Weslaco High debuted in the poll at No. 10 after a second consecutive dominant win to open the season, this week beating Edcouch-Elsa 58-7.

Mission High, sitting 2-0 after a 56-12 win against Donna North, missed out on the rankings by just a single voter point, earning 22 points compared to Weslaco High’s 23.

Most of the teams in the top 10 figure to face difficult tests during Week 3. No. 1 Edinburg Vela continues its run of strong competition, traveling to face No. 8 McAllen Memorial on Friday. No. 2 San Benito is also facing a ranked opponent, hosting No. 9 PSJA High on Friday. No. 5 Mission Veterans and No. 7 Brownsville Veterans clash on Friday for an early upper hand in District 16-5A Division I, while No. 4 Harlingen High hosts Converse Judson on Friday and No. 3 Brownsville Hanna travels to play Weslaco East, which dropped from the rankings this week, on Friday.

The following are the teams in the RGVSports.com top 10 poll, with first-place votes in parentheses and total points based on 10 points for a first-place vote through 1 point for a 10th-place vote.
