Caballero has Lionettes on verge of district championship

FREDDY GONZALEZ | Valley Morning Star

The La Feria Lionettes soccer team is two victories away from winning the District 31-4A title and one reason for the success is star forward Jacqi Caballero.

This season, the senior has racked up seven goals and more than seven assists. Against Port Isabel last week, Caballero assisted on a remark-able seven goals and recorded a hat trick against Raymondville.

For her solid performances, she is this week’s Valley Morning Star female Player of the Week.

Despite her success, Caballero’s career hasn’t been without its highs and lows.

As a freshman, she tore her ACL, but through determination and perseverance she shook off the injury and won the district’s Offensive Player of the Year award her sophomore and junior seasons.

“Jacqi is a unique player that I have had the privilege to see mature and grow into the young woman she is today,” said La Feria head coach Adriana Carmona. “Jacqi is a player with determination and latent qualities that will help her be successful in the future.”

The Lionettes are a perfect 8-0 in league action with games against Lyford tonight and at home against IDEA Frontier on Tuesday.

Just behind La Feria is Rio Hondo, which has two losses.
