Alas-Meza a major factor behind Rio Hondo’s latest postseason berth

Rio Hondo soccer star Jose Alas-Meza has been having a banner season for the Bobcats.

This year, the senior knocked in 22 district goals and helped the Bobcats to a 5-3 District 31-4A record.

He also scored an average of 2.75 goals per game this league season and guided Rio Hondo back to the postseason for the second consecutive time since the program’s inception last season.

For his efforts, Alas-Meza is this week’s Valley Morning Star male Player of the Week.

Alas-Meza had standout performances against Port Isabel, scoring three goals and an assist. And against Raymondville earlier this season, he scored seven goals.

“Meza really brings out his and his team’s best attributes when he gets his team involved,” said Rio Hondo head coach Candido Ochoa. “We have made some nice plays as a team and it starts with him. He is an offensive weapon, but I’ve also seen him give passes that are almost as sweet as his goals.

“He’s seen it all come together and I know teamwork will give us the best chance in the playoffs.”

Rio Hondo finished the season as the No. 2 seed out of District 31-4A.
