Mission Veterans boys basketball coach de la Garza reinstated from leave

Mission CISD reinstated Mission Veterans boys basketball coach Romeo de la Garza earlier this month.

“Coach de la Garza resumed his normal duties on Feb. 8,” Mission CISD Director of Public Relations Craig Verley said.

MCISD conformed to The Monitor on Jan. 22 that de la Garza had been placed on administrative leave. De la Garza missed the Patriots’ last seven games, including four home games, during the leave.

Mission Veterans did not reach the playoffs this season, posting a 17-18 overall record and a 6-10 mark in District 31-5A. The Patriots finished their season on Tuesday with a 59-35 loss to Roma.

De la Garza will lead the offseason program as the Patriots prepare for a new-look Class 5A next year after the UIL realignment reshapes districts across the state.

Verley declined to comment further on de la Garza’s status, citing privacy of personnel matters.
De la Garza, Veterans athletic director Leticia Ibarra and interim superintendent Cris Valdez did not return phone calls seeking comment.
