It’s been a roller coaster of a season for the La Feria Lionettes.
After starting the District 32-4A schedule on an impressive 6-0 run, the team has dropped its last two games.
Back-to-back losses to Grulla (43-35) and Hidalgo (30-23) have put the Lionettes in a tough spot to repeat as league champions.
La Feria currently sits in second place, tied with Grulla (6-2) and one game behind Hidalgo (7-1).
“At one point we controlled our own destiny,” said La Feria head coach Angel Martinez. “We have played a great defensive game, which is something we prioritize here at La Feria. We held Hidalgo to 30 points, which is good because they are a high-scoring team. But when you only put up 23 points, you’re not going to win any ball games.”
With six games remaining on the schedule, the Lionettes hope Hidalgo drops one somewhere in between, allowing them to bridge the gap.
“I told the girls to just play the way they’re capable of playing and finish off the district strong, and at the end of the day we still have a chance for at least a co-championship,” Martinez said.
The Lionettes host Zapata tonight before heading to Port Isabel on Tuesday.
DISTRICT 32-6A SNAP SHOT: If Tuesday’s win over crosstown rival Harlingen South proved anything for the Harlingen Lady Cardinals, it proved beyond a doubt that their seven-game win streak is legitimate.
The win also heightened the stakes for the inevitable showdown at Weslaco High on Tuesday.
Currently, both Weslaco and Harlingen are tied for the top spot in District 32-6A with identical 7-1 records. The Lady Cards take on Brownsville Rivera tonight, the Lady Panthers on Tuesday and Weslaco East next Friday.
Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers visit Brownsville Hanna tonight and Brownsville Rivera next Friday.
Harlingen South dropped to second place after Tuesday’s loss, but remains very much in contention for a conference title. The Lady Hawks take on the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons tonight at Los Fresnos before hosting Brownsville Hanna on Tuesday.
South will likely not overlook the Lady Golden Eagles as in their first encounter of the season Hanna took Harlingen South into overtime before the Lady Hawks won the contest 67-57.
Both San Benito and Los Fresnos sit at 4-4 and are tied for fourth place. After starting the season at 5-1, the Lady ’Hounds have dropped their last three consecutive games, falling to Weslaco, Harlingen and Los Fresnos.
San Benito’s next few opponent’s are Brownsville Rivera on Tuesday and Harlingen South next Friday.
