Friday signaled the first day of scrimmages across the Rio Grande Valley and that meant a few sub-5A teams got a taste of some controlled and live football action.

RAYMONDVILLE VS. LA JOYA: The Raymondville Bearkats hit the turf for the first time this season against the La Joya Coyotes in the team’s first scrimmage on Friday. Offensively, the Bearkats scored three times during the controlled portion of the game and score 10 points in the live portion.

Led by quarterback Daniel Gutierrez, the Bearkats had a total offense production of 485 yards, with the senior QB throwing for 245 yards on 12 of 20 passing attempts. Jacob Posas, Xavier Ledesma and Justin Taylor Noyola each caught one touchdown pass on the evening. Noyola caught four receptions for 110 yards, while teammate Ledesma hauled in 82 yards on four receptions. On the ground, Raymondville rushed for an impressive 193 yards on 34 carries.

Defensively, Raymondville held the Coyotes scoreless across both controlled and live and gave up 220 yards on the night.

“I felt we had a good outing. We played all our kids and were able to get good work in,” said Raymondville head coach Frank Cantu.

The Bearkats are back in action on Friday at Brownsville Porter.

RIO HONDO VS. EDCOUCH-ELSA: The Bobcats were back in action for their first scrimmage of the year against the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets on Friday. The Bobcats and the Yellowjackets played to a 13-13 draw during the live portion of the game.

Rio Hondo is back at work against the Valley View Tigers in their second scrimmage of the preseason on Friday.
